I am a Deputy and was on the expressway last night. Well I hope everything gets ironed outbetween the two Departments. The most important thing is that all Officers make it home to family. I for one would not be able to pass another Officer that needed an assist regardless of what department he or she worked for.

I work just off the LIE. The sheriffs were pulling cars out of the snow on the Expressway, entrance/ exit ramps, and onto the Service Rd. They helped us out, and the citizens of SC all night long.

Heard that the deps left dms by exit 56 to go gawk at a tractor trailer that was jacknifed at 63....DOT was then not able to clear the road in the hauppauge area. DOT says they're like the keystone cops...all a bunch of gawkers. I guess when your used to makin the bologna sandwiches a jacknifed truck is exciting to gawk at.

They make great money. After 5 years they stand to make appx 115K or 120K midnights with around 100 hrs of OT. 160 requires appx 800 hours of OT or 70 extra 8 hour shifts on your days off. Roughly 6.5 working days a week. And yes the avg cop works appx 205 days without sicktime and no they dont take 26 sick days a year. That would level a heavy hammer on their head, ask around.

Most good jobs work around 230 days a year, a big differnece yes. But most jobs dont work holidays or late nights or weekends or yes, get assaulted and witness horrific things on a day by day basis.

Please dont compare nights working at Blockbuster ( no offense ) but thats not a career, and shouldnt be. Sorry.

I can't believe the time, money, and WHINING that the SCPD Union spends on getting the hwy back from the DEPS. I was an Assistant Principal for 8 years in a local high school, to only find out last year that the Board Of Education has decided to replace the 3 AP's with teacher Deans. That saved the district over $100,000 a year. The district did however move us from our AP position to a teaching spot, so we at least still had a job in this very tough economy. The administrators union didn't point blame on the teachers union for stealing jobs, the BOE made a decision to save money similar to Levy's decision to put the Deps on the hwy. SCPD you got a great gig, last I heard work work less then me, get paid very well for what they do and spend alot of time WHINING!!!! Grow up and appreciate the job you have in this tough economy!!!!

I can't believe the time, money, and WHINING that the SCPD Union spends on getting the hwy back from the DEPS. I was an Assistant Principal for 8 years in a local high school, to only find out last year that the Board Of Education has decided to replace the 3 AP's with teacher Deans. That saved the district over $100,000 a year. The district did however move us from our AP position to a teaching spot, so we at least still had a job in this very tough economy. The administrators union didn't point blame on the teachers union for stealing jobs, the BOE made a decision to save money similar to Levy's decision to put the Deps on the hwy. SCPD you got a great gig, last I heard work work less then me, get paid very well for what they do and spend alot of time WHINING!!!! Grow up and appreciate the job you have in this tough economy!!!!

You are bringing up a very different point. If you replaced Detectives with police officers because they made less money, than that would be a better comparison. Same job, different unions within that job.
What Levy did was take one union from a completely different job and replace another union with them.
Thats the same as taking NYPD officers and replacing them with correction officers, park police, or sanitation police because they made less money.

And coming from a family of educators, they have the best job in the world. In the police dept you have to wait about 15 years before you start getting holiday and summer vacations. Weekends off only come around every 2-3 months, and then only last for 3 weeks Teachers dont work nights or midnights and miss time home with their family. Or work while their kids are opening presents on Christmas because they cant get the day off. Last time I check teachers get all those perks the first year on the job, all while sitting in a classroom thats in a safe controlled environment. They also end up making a better salary in long island than cops do. Look around at salaries. Suffolk isnt so far and above everyone else anymore. State PD, and Nassau are both comparable. NYPD is catching up, and all other police depts are right there.

I respect teachers and all that they do, but you shouldnt be complaing from your position or saying how great cops have it, and making comparisons that do not apply.

Last I checked, school administrators have to take at least 36 credits to get their certification (School District Administrator) beyond their teaching certification. SCPD and SCDS go through the same academy from what I was told. From what I see as a tax payer SCDS are doing just as good of a job on the hwy and expwy as the police did. And by the way I do agree that teaching is the best job and having every summer and holiday off is priceless!!!!!
