The former mayor of the Village of Farmingdale has been arrested on charges that he prepared and submitted false records to the New York State Comptroller's Office during a state audit, Nassau County District Attorney Denis Dillon announced today.

Joseph Trudden, 55, of Farmingdale, in records claimed that he had lunch and dinner meetings with various public officials and community leaders at local restaurants using a village credit card, Dillon said in a news release.

However, Dillon said, an investigation found that many of these alleged meetings to discuss issues of public interest never took place. Dillon estimated the cost of those meetings to be over $2,000.

The alleged false documents were submitted for an audit that the comptroller's office was conducting for June 2001 through May 2003, Dillon said. Today's news release said Trudden allegedly submitted the documents in July 2003 as part of that audit.

Trudden was charged with first-degree tampering with public records and first-degree offering a false instrument for filing. He also was charged with fourth-degree grand larceny and first-degree falsifying business records and defrauding the government. All of the charges are felonies.

Trudden is scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead today.

Denis Dillon is taking time off from going to the grand jury to investigate lawyer jokes to "investigate" illegal housing? It's no secret that the Catholic church is a big supporter/sponsor of illegal aliens. Where do you think those Sunday collection funds go? The pedophile priests? Oh wait. My bad. What was I thinking. Never mind.

It is no accident that Nassau County has achieved the lowest crime rate in the nation under Denis Dillon's tenure as District Attorney (in case you missed Forbes magazine). It is no accident that his felony conviction rate is among the highest in the nation.

Dillon has won the respect of many people from all different political backgrounds for doing the right thing- not always the easy thing. There are not many people like him out there.

I for one am glad that Dillon has taken a proactive approach to helping solve the illegal housing problem in Nassau. This is an issue that no one has wanted to deal with- some have spoken about it but no real action has been taken in Nassau County.

I can only imagine who wrote this- because there is no way you have any clue as to how Denis Dillon's office operates. Denis Dillon does not just sit there and wait for cases to walk through the door- he has had and still has a proactive office that conducts investigations in all areas. He is a defender of all people and anyone who took the time to look at his accomplishments and records would see this. Nassau County benefits from his vast experience. Calling him a political hack and over the hill just demonstrates that you do not know the man.
