I was at SUNY SB the other day, and saw 2 buffy so called firemarshals. Upon looking closer, their badges stated DEPUTY CHIEF. Are they in fact deputy chiefs, and if not, why are they wearing these badges. It is a disgrace to all of the real firefighters and ranking officers that deserve the recognition, not some buffy kids playing the part. What a disgrace. Let the campus president know.....

I never understood why they were "Chiefs". To me they were just instructors.

FYI The SUNY Fire Marshals are the first line fire protection for the roughly 30,000 or so people on the SB campus (probobly more important than you are). They are Hazmat Techs and many are officers of chiefs in their home departments....it's common for state...STATE fire marshals to hold the title of chief due to their responsibilites and job requirements.... In addition they're not kids nor are they students of the campus they are trained professional fire fighters and rescue personnel. Get over yourself.

What makes the stony brook fire marshals any different than suffolk county or town of brookhaven fire marshals, all who wear bugles?

Well ryan why didn't you stop them and ask them why they wear what they wear if you were so close to read the badges???Is it that your just stirring the pot or trying to get a job there...Call them what you want but they do provide a great service to a large and very busy university.

Nobody should have the civil service job unless they are qualified for the postion. I will assume that they are, if tests and placements and not patronage were involved in their selection.

As far as having the title of "Chief". In all of our para- military command structures within fire departments and for that matter the publics own perception of a firefighters command structure the title of "Chief" is instantly respected, recognized and most of all understood.

Since they are responsible for the minor city (including skyscrapers) of SUNY @ Stony Brook maybe all those students (not to mention professors, scientists and Doctors) need to see or hear clearly the title of "CHIEF" before they do what is asked/told of them.

Not yet. They got a house and so far just a 40' mahogany bar and a couple of kegs and one tap. The rest of the equipment due to arrive as budgetary constraints allow.
