Harry S Truman

It is interesting to read these threads and see the same posters post the same stuff. Dems post how bad things will be....end of the world and the like, since the Republicans are back in power.....Republicans speak of Mangano as the second coming and he will wreak vengance upon all Democrats and conservatives in county government. Interesting to see the fringes post here.
It comes down to this, assuming after the legal battles, Mangano takes the helm of the county, he will be faced with an interesting situation. Does he take his lead from Joe Mondello and lead the county as a proxy for Mondello much like Gulotta was forced to do for all those years or does he rise above Mondello and run the County the way it should be run. Further, he needs to cut....cut.....cut....and cut. Mondello is not going to want that , and is already looking to see who he can move from TOH and TOB to the County to free up more jobs in the towns to fill.
Now this becomes a greater problem. Whether anyone wants to admit it or not, Mangano got in because Suozzi ran a non-existant campaign, the voters just were to beaten up to come out to vote, and they never thought they had to. The Republican wave this year was very interesting. Can it be sustained in two years? Will the old Toback seat, now Republican, swing back to being Democrat? This is something the Republicans have to really look at.
To keep control in a County with an increasing Democrat enrollment, they will have to buckle down, and run this county as close to a streamline operation as they can. That means.....eliminate 150 to 200 of the appointed positions that exist in county government. Reduce the County Executive's staff and budget to the bare minimum. Is that going to anger the Town Republicans who became refugees from the County years ago, and want to come back to the County....sure, but it has to be done. The Republicans do not want these next two years to be an anomaly. However, they have to bear in mind that the enrollment edge will be increasing each year, and yes, the books and rolls, if ever cleansed of the dead and moved voters, will show alarming numbers to the Republicans. BTW folks, Post Avenue does know this, and they are concerned.
This wave has the potential to help the Republicans keep solid control of the County for at lease four years, or if not handled right, could see a majority change in two years and then we have a stalemate. I could go on for hours, but these are just a few of the areas the Republicans have to look at.
It comes down to this...can the Republicans govern independent of Post Avenue and Joe Mondello? Can they also appoint a Majority Leader that typifies that independence to show the average voter that business as usual has stopped in Nassau County? It is no small task, trust me, I have seen it, experienced it, and still have the wounds to prove it. Good luck.
