i honestly believe the holdup on the promotions is the huge question " do we actually promote Sgt Hasper to Lt Hasper ? ". I agree with you it is a quandry. My feeling is you have to take cops from the areas like COPE , and even more so D.A.R.E. Patrol has to be the main priority as it is the backbone. Take able bodied Cops from wherever they can . P.A.L. , Crime stoppers, Domestric Violence unit, pistol licenses etc. The simple solution is they raise the County taxes a small amount . The police portion is only about $500 a year for most people. I'll bet it they raised it $50 /year they could afford to hire more PO's or pay the OT to fill the cars. It will never happen as Levy has no balls. We get our raises because an arbitrator feels it is what we deserve. County taxes stay pat for years. Equipment costs go up . It does not take a brain surgeon to realize that there is no more fat to trim , and operating costs ( which every business has ) are going up. Something has to give . We pay the raises in our taxes every year for our schools , how about our PD.
PS in response to the last query about what did Hasper do ? how about stopping in any of the 1st Pct Diners , (start with the Town House Diner) and ask any of the waitresses who have worked there for a while about Bill Hasper. I'm sure they all tell each other their stories so it shouldn't take long to find someone in the know. Hopefully someday it will make Newsday if he screws up again or if any of the past victims come forward. Enough said !

Evoc in between refresher and academy classes can handle calls while driving their push bumpercars around. Aviation can assist the 5th and 4th and handle calls wearing their flight suits, maybe even fly in to the calls and have ES rappel down to handle a domestic. Heres a great idea make the nut jobs who they hide as duty officers write reports for people who respond to police headquarters and think they might actually get help from a cop, instead of having the front door guy dial turrets and have a car from the 5th respond to take paper. Or heaven help me for even thinking this. In the event that OT is required for any supervisor in the pct. make a shoefly scumbag in IA come down out of the ivory tower and go back in the bag and attempt to learn or re-learn what is really going on since they decided to hide from the road. You can't take a guy who was suspended for a year for drug use and then put him charge of honest hardworking cops. They laugh at him and the department, where else except for the S.C.P.D could you go from suspended drug abuser to C.O.

Therefore the 5th will not be assigned any new supervisors simply because the legislature believes most officers are mature enough to be trusted to perform their duties and responsibilities with NO supervison.

Personally I believe this is a prudent policy because Suffolk officers are going to do whatever they want regardless of what the Brass tells or orders them to do.

You are reading into it too much, if you think for a second that someone is going to walk into a elite job like e/s just for being in the right place at the right time, many others would have gone. Its not like levy asked him'' so now you delivered a baby, where do you want to go?'', rather he put in for it, interviewed and is being considered prior to the patrol pickup of a baby being born in the middle of 112.
The reality is this timed out perfectly for someone attempting to transfer, something like this is usually a home run, unless of course someone's son needs the job more.

I dont think the purpose was to ''get'' him in. I think it was to congratulate him on a job well done. We see so much criticism and negative commments about us on the board, perhaps it was time for someone to be congratulated for doing something nice. Quick test for you ppos. Go into your sgts office when he isnt too busy and tell him you want to put your papers in for e/s. If he doesnt laugh you out of the room, someone might actually read your transfer p/work.
Its not that easy to transfer out of patrol, most of you could attempt to transfer to COPE, and actually be interviewed, if you are squared away. Maybe highway as well, but anything else, just getting your immediate supervisors to look at you seriously is a battle. When someone doesn't go where they want or do well on a test they immediately blame nepotism and cheating. While these things do exist they are not nearly as widespread as most believe. Additionally, in reality that is how this job works, the bigger the hook, the higher the job, lets be honest now.

There are 100s of qualified cops trying to move, calling out to anyone they know, that has moved up or on from patrol. There are dozens of cops with similiar stories, making their own little blurb in the papers, hoping its enough to get over. Thats the way of life. Dont sit and past judgement until you've waited 3 years just to interview for a step up, all the while your bosses telling you ''Keep up the 30 bodies a year and the 30 utts a month, sooner or later your day will come" as they move on from your hard work. I can only assume that these people lack any kind of life. I have to say, I don't follow the local School blog. And really do not care.

The current crop of e/s got in thru their highway hooks. Not thru ''years of patrol'' Yes they all started in patrol like everyone else. You need a hook or a highlight to move. Some of them were promoted over other more qualified candidates, because of the crane in their back pocket. Doesnt mean they werent qualified.
Frankly this po doesnt have a shot if he dont know anyone in there. This baby thing can only get him a interview.

Where are these "hundreds of qualified cops"? How many actually applied for the job? From what I've seen very few people are actually putting in for ES, cope, PC etc and almost no one is locking up 30 a year with 30 UTT's a month. In reality the ones who complain about who got what or who went where are the ones I have to say to " hey Harry, it's August are you planning on making an arrest this year"? Truth is the people putting up the good numbers are the ones going places. When the do nothings don't get what they want they blast the ones who do by calling them suckups. They cant win. I have yet to see an example of someone putting up good numbers not go somewhere IF THEY WANTED TO, and if they did not have excessive "baggage". Same goes for promotions. Everyone sits around and moans about the idiots who make boss. How many of these complainers actually picked up a book, or even sat for the test? I hear the same old excuse all the time, "why should I give up my OT"? Well, if that's the choice you made, God bless you. I have no quible with that. Just so you know, kid, in a court of law, arriving at a 911 call investigating it as you see fit(whether or not you even left the car, perhaps you rolled down your windows) and 10-60ing it is a police action.
Listen in all honesty the es job was filled when it was offered. es41 and tptb knew who they wanted way before they began the investigative process. But due to dept guidelines, they have to go through the motions. Its going to their chosen guy, over whomever else applied, more or less qualified dont matter.
I'm not familiar with this po, but they'll probably interview him a couple times and let him stick around until the end of the process, then give him a nice letter of denial, but make him feel special so that he isnt too dissapointed. Thats the system, its all politics. I dont know why you are going after me personally, I never gave anything resembling a personal opinion, I'm just explaining what is going on, since you are quite naive.

How else can we keep track of where each piece of paper goes? That doesn't mean the bosses numbers count. When the squads are compared no one is concerned about what the bosses did. "Padding" the squads stats doesn't fool anyone. The bosses are judged by how well the PO's in their squads do their jobs. A squad with non-producers can't be made to look good by the bosses writing tickets. No one has asked me for my stats, or asked me to produce more. I have been "told" to get the deadbeats in my squad to do more. Get the picture? You can give me all the examples you want of lt's writing paper. If you had any idea what you were talking about you would realize you were making my argument for me. "He berated the squad for not getting more than 7 between them". And why don't you want to go to TVB? What are you afraid of? Grow a set and prove your case. And don't give me the lame excuse about being needed on the road. Sounds like you aren't doing anything important anyway. Maybe someday you'll get promoted and it will all become clear to you.

Spare me will ya! How many staff meetings have you sat in on? How many conversations have you had with your CO? How many times have you spoken to a Chief about this. I'm willing to bet the number is zero. I've seen the same "stat sheets" you have. In the CO's office and at staff meetings no one, and I mean NO ONE is even looking at any numbers produced by the bosses. The only numbers anyone is concerned with are the numbers put up by the PO's. When the county calls one of their "Look what we did " press conferences all the numbers are included. No one is ignoring them or pretending they don't exist. The fact remains when the CO is EVALUATING THE SQUADS he is looking only at the PO's stats. So until you can tell me you're privy to other information your argument holds no water.
Yeah, I studied. If it's as simple as that what's holding you back? Time is at a premium for me too. There's a world of difference between making boss out here and doing it in the city. Like I said, being able to read and write gets you promoted in the city.


Have you taken a good look at the roads lately? Too many people are getting "breaks". The same guy who shakes your hand in church will cut you off on the way home, then give you the finger. Give these people a break and they drive away and as soon as they think you're not looking they will do the same thing that caught your attention in the first place. If more people got tickets and more cops went to TVB to convict them the roads would be much safer for me, you and our families. (I don't know how this topic got to be part of the issue)

How many people other then you are so insecure that the 1st thing they do is make some statement that they are employed as a cop? I will say if anything the guys from the last test are more gungho to write and 32 than learn how to do patrol work. I dont know what kind of lame squad you have, but unless its mids sqd 4-5 I dont talk to many pos with a tin 5185 or higher that doesnt write 20+ a month. There are guys out there with 30 plus bodies already in patrol. Most of them are quite happy too. I dont hear much complaining and if I do its typical b/s, that all jobs have, who isnt carrying their weight, whos sucking bosses ass, whos banging who.

Im not going to get into a pissing match with you but I'm on pace to have 60 arrests this year30 at half way point., I dont care if you have more or less, I do plenty of police action. No, they aint all shoplifters in custody, or domestics harassments. I didnt actually read this whole thing it seems like a repost of any or all of your other posts. Whats funny is this was a nice discussion about what we thought about a guy making es, now we have someone claiming to be a boss, telling us this thread was us whining pissing and moaning, Ive looked over the thread and dont see anyone complaining about the job itself, maybe about the politics or ''hooks'' but not about scpd itself. In fact the only complaining I've read was yours.

My guess is they will interview him a couple times keep him in the running until the final cut, --i know too much survivor, then thank him and send him on his way. He should get out of patrol with his highlight but something minor like cope. Thats the way the game is played out here. Im not condoning it or condemning it, I really dont even think about it, just accept it as the way it is.
Again, after 4-5 years on, the calls tend to run into each other, the car stops, 32s all blend into a hazy blur. I dont really think about ''police action call'' or emt call or really stupid call. Its all the same garbage.

The system is what it is. The problem with scpd is the bosses ram stats down your throat, and promise you your day, most of them know full well who the next promotion is going to, whether thru hook or nepotism. But they need to motivate you, so they tell you what they think you want to hear and press you for more. Thats the way it is. The job is still good, as long as you realize its JUST a job.
Just be aware of it, use it to your advantage when possible. Take whats being said to you with a grain of salt, enjoy your job.Take your meals and actually kick up your feet, as opposed to sitting on that house with the warrant. If you play their game, its just a matter of time before you become a miserable wretch. If you enjoy writing summons, then do so, if you enjoy catching bad guys then do so. If you enjoy being a sector car operator, and have no desire to COPE with the world, or go to crime scene, which is the most boring tedious job you spend more time testifying than anything or anything else, stay in patrol. There is no shame in being a good patrol cop, without patrol bosses, detectives,k-9 wouldnt exist as they do now, they would be answering 911 calls. Patrol is a honorable profession, if you handle a car for 20 years, you have nothing to be ashamed of, nor should you let a boss tell you otherwise.

Ahh another disipicle of the omnipotent icarus has joined the fray, you know it isnt the original icarus, well you would if you've been around as long as I have and seen as much as me. Somehow, while driving for a single-car team and conceding nothing to age, Ken Schrader keeps finding ways to improve.

He's 28th in the Nextel Cup standings -- hardly heady stuff -- but he's got a good chance at improving for the second straight year. His points standing assures him a spot in the field every week, which is a luxury he wished he had in 2003, when he missed four races.

Schrader, who turned 50 in May, plans on driving in the Nextel Cup Series for at least another year and a half, and BAM Racing is trying to make sure he ends his Cup career in the No. 49 Dodge.

Schrader talked with NASCAR.COM's Ryan Smithson at Pocono Raceway, where he finished 20th.

Well, I was excited about it. We hovered around there last year, so we knew hovering around it wasn't going to be good. I think it's the best it's ever been to go to a race and try to qualify.

Granted, we have a couple of legit full-time teams that are out of the top 35. But having eight spots open is pretty big.

I guess I never thought of it that way. Now you guys won't have to worry about missing Indianapolis anymore.

First off, you're not out of provisionals. (Last year) you could be 30th in points out of provisionals and not make the race. So yeah, that is a lot better, you're unlimited now as long as you're in the top 35.

How much of a relief was it when you went to Fontana, had a decent run, and that took some pressure off?

We ran the first four races off last year's points. Going to Daytona and knowing you were in, you know, other than wherever we were last year, and wondering whether that position would get a provisional, that is a huge difference.

And I think we lost four spots last week, and now we are 30th, that is still a little ways away [from 35th] and we had a couple of races where we were really close, 34th or whatever, but hopefully we can keep going in the right direction.

Ken, you are 50 years old and had a bad crash last week at Dover. How do you bounce back from that as opposed to 20 years ago?

I've hit so much stuff, I couldn't tell. When I woke up Monday, everything that was sore is sore everyday I wake up, so I figured it was no big deal.

Remember your bad crash here [at Pocono] in 2003?

That was a big deal! Ha! Got down in 1, early, early in the race, seven or eight laps.

Eighth lap. Yeah.

Smoked down in there, and the brakes pedal went to the floor. I was like, "Dang! Brake pedal really went to the floor!" I was watching qualifying the day before and guys were running 200 miles per hour right here.

And we got turned around, so it backed in. That made it a lot easier. It wasn't that bad. Got it turned over, got out, and got to beat traffic home.

I know you're good friends with Mark Martin, but it seems to me you've got a funnier story about Rusty Wallace.

Well, I grew up with Rusty. I was a year older than Rusty and we raced right there together at home in the St. Louis area. We did a lot of things together.

Some of them you wouldn't want to mention. We had a lot of fun together and obviously I know Rusty a lot better than I know Mark. But Mark and Rusty raced together a bunch in the ASA deal.

Rusty has always been so wide open and focused the whole time, we went our different ways. He went ASA racing and I went dirt racing. We started out together then we didn't race together for quite a while.

Were you surprised he didn't run a couple more years?

Uh, nah. Rusty has got so much other stuff going on. Business-wise and that. I think he was ready to quit.

I think maybe he questions it now, you hear him say he might have pulled the plug up one year too early, but he's got his son coming up and doing some racing, I think he was ready to do some other stuff.

I mean, the Cup schedule, 36 weekends is a lot of weekends.

You said earlier about having a lot of stuff going on and we know you're going to be in a Darrell Waltrip truck temporarily. Are you going to drive for yourself in the Craftsman Truck Series in a couple of years or for another team?

That is definitely the plan. The plan is to grow Schrader Racing into a two-truck team and we don't know exactly what we're doing next year yet; but as far as the truck schedule, if we're going to run the truck full-time with someone else or myself and someone else with it, the D.W. truck at Michigan, that just came out of the blue. I got a phone call the other day. Heck yeah, I will drive that thing. That will be fun.

No. It's not really a wheelchair. It just got wheels on it. It doesn't roll, that way I don't have to worry about hurting myself.

I haven't got to get it over to my shop now, it's sitting in the lobby over at the BAM shop, the boys really did a nice job on it, it's a neat little piece of work.

I went to the driver's meeting and I came back and there was a bunch of people by the truck. I knew I wouldn't get out of this day -- this 50-year-old deal -- clean, but it was pretty painless.

I wasn't expecting anything. In my mind, I had thought that nothing had happened yet, and I didn't know what to expect when I saw all the people gathered around. I knew who was going to be the center though.

I dont actually care, I just think it is hypocritical that you are attempting to put others down for doing the exact thing you are doing. I do see a difference, you are quite serious, where as most other posting here do it to amuse themselves.

I think I'd agree with the last post, only one poster here has to establish his ''superiority'', length of service/rank and why everyone else is lame, you need to show everyone that you are a ''real cop'' and try very hard(insecurity) to prove everyone else and their opinions are lesser. No one else is saying hey I've done this or I am this, so listen to me. That is why you are a easy mark here. No one else is trying to put others down by saying where they work, whether the desk or the 2 or 4 pct. You seem to need to know where everyone ranks, and attempt to judge them by their job, ''oh you are just a midnite cop for 25 years in the 4th? you slug'' Try it. if patrol was that easy why does everyone want to get out?
Speaking of priorities, you are supposedly a cop, a sgt, yet you are here arguing with everyone you can, attempting to put them down because they post here, and attempting to put down where they work, arent you answering these posts, how mature can you be? Looks like I ruffled some feathers. I don't spend any energy on this. It is a mere diversion as I think of ways to make your life miserable and your job more difficult. After all I am nothing but a useless "sergeant" (Never said I was a sergeant, you guys did. My rank may be higher.). I get paid to sit on my flabby, oversized out of shape butt and torment you. Maybe you can suggest a competent therapist for me (yours?) who can help me with my self improvement project. As I stated in my previous post(s), I have no problem with working cops. I have no problem with cops who stay in patrol. Everyone has their reason for doing what they do. I have a problem with the people who do NOTHING then piss and moan about not getting what they want. Then they complain that the cops who go somewhere with good stats are suckups. Ditto for promotions. They cry nepotism, cheating etc when they don't get "made". How many of them actually picked up a book? How many even took a test? Yet they still claim it's not fair. These are the people my comments were directed at before things turned into a fecal flinging contest. I can't believe anyone would actually attempt to disagree with that. As far as the name changing goes I have no choice, someone or something keeps taking my usernames. Talk about taking things too serious, wow censorship!
