Did anyone see the NSUH bus in Queens rolled over? I heard the injuries were serious. Any info?

Mike,
There was no pt on board the bus and no North Shore Medic was even in the bus. The medics were on a FDNY bls bus with a Critical pt coming out of Rikers. The FDNY EMT that was driving the North Shore ambulance was the one involved in the accident. The civilian in thei private vehicle was injured slightly and the FDNY EMT was also slightly injured. I hope this answers your questio. Have a good night a stay safe in Ridge.

Why was a FDNY EMT driving a NSUH bus?

In the city it is a policy that if an ALS unit backs up a BLS that if the pt is already loaded up in their rig to take the als equipment and both medics go in the back of the bls bus. The reason behind this is that you have 2 als providers in the back treating the pt. The other bls provider from whatvever agency will drive the ns bus to the receiving hospital in a non emergency mode. the pt is getting the best care with 2 medics in the back.

Policy?

I am not saying that having 2 medics in one ambulance to care for a "critical" patient is anything but a good idea but where did the "policy" come from. There is no policy that REQUIRES the two medics to care for any patient in the back of the BLS bus and have the other EMT drive their bus. When bad things happen (accidents) and "policies" are created to make things sound logical, you have to wonder what type of coverup is taking place.

i should have been more clear. it is a nslij policy, not a city policy and there is no need for ns to have any type of cover up. it was the city emt's fault for causing the accident.

Are yor really telling me that the genius that makes policy at North Shore have written that for EVERY occasion when a patient is in a BLS bus and need ALS that both medics must ride with the patient. Is this logical if the patient is stable?

Seems like either a misinterpretation of policy or a stupid policy.

And if this is really the policy, who at NSLIJ EMS signed off on allowing a non employee, ( FDNY tech) to drive a NS bus. If I was NS insurance co, I would be having a good look at this one, and if I was FDNY, I would make sure any outside ambulance provider had an insurance rider for nonemployees driving.

It is FDNY policy that 2 medics ride in the back of the ambulance if the paramedics deem the patient needs it. IE cardiac arrest, this means both of you can admin drugs or ALS skills so on and so forth. This is true even if the Medic bus is FDNY and the BLS is not IE NSLIJ. Because the policy is set forth by the city, and yes there is an opps order for it, ALL NYC 911 agencies are subject to it regardless of there agency, North Shore, Metrocare FDNY etc as long as the driver has been trained and cleared by there agency to operate a vehicle

When I ride in the City (46th Battalion in Queens) it is not of the ordinary to have two medics get in the back of a BLS bus in the City of New York, usually only one will get in with the BLS Tech, unless the Patient needs both medics to provide competent care.

I heard the fdny rookie driving the ambulance had a suspended license, is this true?

I can't confirm or deny that rumor but I would say no. Headquarters runs license checks regugarly, if not everyday. Most of the time they know before we do if there is a problem with our license.

all in the end

Does anyone see the big picture hear. The emt was cleared of any malicious wrong doing. It was an Accident. Thank god nobody was really hurt and in the end we will get a new bus. Although I have to say I was amazed to see 46Y on its side and being dragged down QB. We will all laugh about it soon enough. After you've been around a while these come and these things go.

Stay safe everyone. see ya on the street

I'm sure the city has each FDNY employee in the LENS system (license event notification) that the NYDMV has... they get an email anytime someone gets suspended, revoked, etc. When you joined up you probably signed a release for it without realizing it.
