I Got my letter for suffolk sheriff today. Have to return it to schedule an interview. Is this interview the orientation? If so, what exactly do they do at it? I got a 96 on the test. I heard possible class going in in March, any rumors? Thanks and good luck all! Oh, the date on the letter is 12/23/04. Today is 12/28/04. You have 7 business days to return it. Again, good luck all.

Based on the letters going out now - what's the earliest that people could get called for the physical?

12-30-2004, 11:35 PM
I would say the seminar would be in jan and the physical probalby some time im march, start running now.

I took alot of police civil service tests and they all seem to be hiring at the same time. This is not what I have hoped for, its what I have been fearing. I took the dep. sheriff and scored a 93 and they might hire in feb? I also took the suffolk pd test and scored 92.5 which I should be geting a letter in the coming months, furthermore I just took the medical for the nys court officer, and lastly I am going into the nypd academy next week!

The main thing I have been fearing is going into the academy and then getting a letter for orientation from one of these departments. From what I understand when you are in the academy you are not allowed to be absent, and most of the time the orientations and the other steps in the hiring process are during the week for scpd and sc sheriff. :(

I guess its time to make some important choices- any input would be greatly appreciated

The reason the jobs call you out the same time is Deputy Sheriffs as well as all other police officers in Suffolk attend the same Police Academy together. Thus all the jobs look to hire at the same time.

If you received your pre-canvas letter this week figure on a canvas letter in the next 2 to 3 weeks with a seminar in February. The current rumor on hiring is 38 Deputies and 70 Suffolk PD. With a class going in the academy in June or July.

Have the 70 SCPD candidates already been selected?
If they have then I would think that the guy who scored 92.5 on the SCPD test shouldn't have to worry about being called for the SCPD and SCSD at the same time. I'm guessing that the SCSD class will go in well before the second SCPD class for the 92.5's?

Go to the job that takes you first while in the academy be honest and let the people in room 523 know that you need time off for a seminar with another Police agency they will give you a tour change if needed. Civil service law check it out. But dont lie about it and what ever you do dont be a big mouth and tell those in the academy with you they will be jelous.

If the city calls first go. Time will count toward dep time on front.

If the deps call first go you will go into the suffolk ploice academy. If the PD calls you went through the academy.

One huge piece of advice take it serious all of it or you will be screwed and out of a job.

This may be a silly question, but...
I have my wedding in the first week of July with a 2 week honeymoon. Say the academy class starts in June, how would this work?

I would assume they would tell me to cancel my honeymoon. Can anyone say otherwise?

Cheers.

To what ever it takes.

When you go to the city oriantation follow the directions given to you. Bring some money for lunch. If you are one of those guys who needs to use the mens room all the time dont drink too much liquid that morning. You only get a couple chances to use a three stall mens room that you will share with 1000 guys. I would get droped off you do not want your car towed that day. And some advice do not quit your job untill that day. If you have not quit think about this the academy could be postponed. Stranger thing have happened. But take it all serious. And good luck with the other jobs.

I'd really like to know what job "on the job2" works for? When you consider his inability to communicate in writing, it's difficult to believe police officials would let him anywhere near a crime scene that may require him to write an official police document.

]Info a bit wrong there. If you go through the Suffolk Class as a Dep. and then get called later on for PD, you have to go through the Academy all over again...A friend of mine went through State Trooper Academy, then got called by Deps., they let him on without an Academy, then he got called by EastHampton Town, had to go through the SCPD Academy. A few years later he got called by SCPD, they made him go through the Academy AGAIN !!! They said it was because when he went through as EastHampton, even though it was teh same academy and some of the same instructors, he did not go through as SPCD !!! The arrogance !!! So keep that in mind. Going through SCPD as a Dep. will not get you out of doing it all over again as SCPD....Hope that helps

you have a 2 year grace period if you went thru scpd academy. you will be able to skip academy within 2 years of your current hire date.

SCpd does not make you go back thru their academy beacause they are arrogant it's b/c different rules for different depts. if you go thru as a dep. and called for the pd you go thru the 1st. three months and they cut you loose if your not a tool or injured all other depts such as nypd of troopers have to do the whole thing but whats the big deal your pay almost doubles to workout

So you’re not arrogant. Now what rules do the Suffolk County Academy instructors teach too deps. What SCSO rules do the instructors know? So if you are a tool?

Now would you say that the SCPD academy is harder than the State Police Academy? Most Counties, Town and Villages in NY and the U.S. hire City Police and State Troopers and they do not go through an academy. New York State Municipal Police Certificate that’s what they call it. And I call it a redundant waste of money translates to arrogance.

If suffolk pd is putting a class in in march, will they maybe have deps in too? A dep said they can bang out the physicals, psych, and intitial background in time if they start in the begining of February. I guess it's just a waiting game for now. They could finish the background while you are in the academy, the city does it a lot and Suffolk has done it a few times.

Just an update. My friend went to the SCPD lottery today and they said that the names picked out today will go into a class set for October. Probably when they will put Deps in if I had to guess. Even though they could force it for March, I think October sounds more likely. Also said left over names will be used in a class for Spring 06 so that would possibly be the next class of Deps. Keep on running.

So how does this work now cause I don't know. Everybody with a 92 and up got a canvass letter. That's 245 people. How many classes can be expected to come out of that? Is that just for one class they're going to process everyone on that list for, or is two or more classes expected to come from that group of people? I got an 88 and 550 on the list, so I didn't think I'd have any shot at any of the first classes anyway, but does it look like they'll get down to the 88's at all? I have no idea how the system works.

Thats about right, maybe 30. A lot of people turn down the job, defer it to a later date, fail one of the tests, or get turned down on the background. If you are 550, you will get called eventually. They have to wait and see how many people check off they don't want the job on the canvass letters, then you will have a better idea on the first class or not.

They are going to need a lot more deputies. Didn't you guys read the paper where they want to build a new jail? Well even if they break ground late next year it will take years to build it. So all those prisoners will have to be moved to other counties. If they don't build it they will have to be moved. Either way they are going to have to hire more Deputies.

There are only 20 deps in the budget for 2005 maybe you could add 5 more due to retirement. But don't count on Levy hiring any deps this year. IF that were true, there would be ANOTHER "police" academy for agencies within Suffolk County. We're all cops, contrary to the popular belief of some of the SCPD guys. If I've learned one thing in this field, it's take the SCPD stuck-up attitude with a grain of salt.. and that guest in their housecrap just feeds into their egos even more. Hey Dep, you're not a guest in "their" house! You're a recruit, just like the rest of the recruits. Not a "guest"! THEY are a guest in my house, the STATE
We are a guest in their house, we use their facilities, the SCPD owns and staffs the facility, SCPD Academy, and if we got out of line they'd have no problem refusing to accept us anymore. Many Agencys use it including the State, because its a quality system.
You own the State?, get off the pipe highwaters, you are a civil servant, a squirrel chasing your little nut. Dont compare yourself to a County dept, you are just a man, a little one with a very frail ego.

Retired Thank God!

I am a retired PO, I will not say from which job for fear of being jumped on and fist pumped in print for the next two pages. I will say this, it is important to have pride in your job, but not at the expense of someone elses. Jobs do not have attitudes, SOME of the people who work there might have those attitudes. You have to have a little thicker skin and not worry about this guys or that quote etc. Every guy out there in some way has a positive effect on how the public looks at us, but most of what is printed here is accessed by the public and stands to lessen their opinion of us as a whole. While I know there are imposters and wanna bees here, for the most part I think the real guys ought not take part in the bash fest that ensues on each site. I for one respect the job you guys are doing, in my day we didn't have to deal with this crap. You earned your pay and went home, if you encountered other law enforcement officers on or off duty you treated them as good as you would want to be treated under similiar circumstances, ie: like gold. If the skells gave you attitude they regretted that, a lot. If a member of the public saw you smack somebody they felt the guy must have deserved it. It was easier back then, I don't envy you fellows now, but you really have to reign it in a bit and appreciate each other more. It is a brotherhood, and you are on your own!

Besides what the orientation letter states, should we be prepared to supply any other history/background information that day, or will we be given instructions and time after orientation to gather any required info?

Thanks.

Just for the record Suffolk County owns the building which belongs to Suffolk Community College not SCPD who by the way shares the building with the Sheriff's Office . The academy program is theirs but that's it.

You will not need anything other than what the letter states for the orientation. If you are on another job, know your days off for the next couple of months because they will have you schedule some appointments.
Any questions, just ask

sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, but i have had many people tell me that there is no lie detector for the sheriffs dept. Can anyone clarify? I figured the backgound would be exactly like PD. Someone told me that there is no lie detector test... not in the contract or something. Any help i would appreciate it.

There is no poly for the suffolk deps

03-15-2005, 04:28 AM
1. We dont share the academy with SCPD, we are guests in their house.
2. The class of Deps will still be the same size no matter what SCPD hires.

just for the record i would like to say the first law enforcement class to graduate from the brentwood academy was the correction officers class of 2000...........so there........................................but seriously this whole deps vs po's vs co's vs state troopers stuff has to stop we are all law enforcement brothers and sisters.especially deps vs co's. we are both without contract, we need to work together.....if every dep and c/o had the balls to "do our jobs by the book" we would both have a contract in 2 months.............unfortunatley there are too many individuals within the sheriffs dept.. (both c/o's and deps)

Yes we all know that. Of course Suffolk Cty. owns every building used by its various agencies. The point is its their program, not ours, the traning equipment and all belong to them, we are guests in their house, period. Lets not be so childish as to argue about a stupid academy.

I am in the nypd academy right now, and recieved the letter for the sheriff dept. a couple of weeks ago. When I called up I told them I was in the night tour in the city(3:37-12:00) and asked if there was any way I could go and try to get out early so I can get to the city in time, because you cannot have any days off while in the academy. When I told her that she kinda said I should defer to next class. But the thing is there might not be another class, so I decided to her I will go and wish for the best.

--Did anybody else ever have this problem? If so how did they react? (they don't care, or will they try to work with you)

Any input would be greatly appreciated

03-21-2005, 11:53 PM
First off congrats on being in the city academy and for scoring high on the deputy test. By them telling you that you should defer too the next class is not a good sign that they will be willing to work with you. Remember, there are many candidates, alot of them being city cops. Also if you go sick while in the academy it counts as going regular sick and you must report to Lefrak right away. There are no E-days, chart days or lost time either. My advice would be to try it anyway, most of the processing is in the morning. If a problem arises, talk too your Lead instructor and dont be afraid to talk with the pba rep or room 523(or whatever room it is now). You have a better chance for the city working with you than the county, sorry, thats just how it is. Your in a big pull of candidates. Also, there will probably be another class, but of course, no gurantees either. Most impotant, be in great shape for the agility, and absolutely don't be awol from east 20th street. Good luck, I hope this helps you out.

Eaxactly how many are they hiring? If its over 50 the deps better take on something more then courthouse security, transport and civil process.

Does it really require 300+ to serve warrants, guard a courthouse and transport prisoners and mental patients? No, if a 20 man force has to do all this PLUS a full time patrol function then Suffolk Sheriff can do patrol with 300+ easily. The average US law enforcement agency has 24.5 sworn officers.

Yes it does.
1st deps are being promoted
1a deps are retiring or leaving for other jobs.
2nd the amount of orders of protection has doubled since 1998
3rd the crime rate and arrest rate, despite levys statistics has gone up, deps are making outrageous overtime, being ''stuck'' at the courthouses.
4th More homes are being ofreclosed on or renters evicted in the past 3 years, than the past 5 prior.
The average day in family court results in over 35 new order of protection being granted a day.
The average day at any of the court complexes results in over 150 new arrests processed a day, plus hearings, arraingments, etc.
I cannot even guess how many people are evicted each day in Suffolk, probably 500, ha.
Please stop guessing on how to run a law enforcement dept. You just sound ignorant.

03-22-2005, 02:33 PM
Oh, dont forget the new luxury hotel being built in Yaphank to incarcerate our wayward citizens, the one thats costing you 300+ bucks a years to build, someones got to hang out there. Might as well be the deps

A 20 men couldnt watch all the prisoners and nuts in UHSB, let alone do any work.

If you do not know what the Sheriff's Office does go on line an read about it. We do not provide courthouse security. And the average dept does not cover an area as populated or as large as suffolk county. We will never do patrol.

So I did that whole 19 page packet, and the other time consuming stuff for nothing? What about the dates for the medical & agility that were given to me yesterday?

Does anyone have any letter or written proof from the Civil Service or Sheriff's office?

This is all B.S. read Newsday. They planned on making this move (supposedly). They did it to hire 20 deps and 50 c/o's (supposedly). They would not waste time and money on investigating us if they "cancelled" the investigation. Relax. There is very little fact on this site to begin with. Good luck all.

Does anyone know what will happen if there are more qualified candidates than what they are looking to hire? I know the rumor is 20 Deps will be hired, but I would image there are more applicants tan that that have passed all the phases as of now. i dont' recall ever hearing anything about the Dep's using a lottery system, but I don't know what else they would do in this situation.

I know they start from the top an work there way down, but if multiple people have the same score, how do they determine which one's will be hired? I believe there are several people who got a 96 that will probably be elligble, and there might not be many above 96 thatt are elligible. If this is the case, they will have to have some means of selecting those with the same score, i'm just not sure if this is done by a lottery or some other way.

06-29-2005, 03:25 PM
score, then alphabetical order. So if your last name starts with Z you should work on getting it legally changed quickly. lol. You can thank your parents for giving you the raw end in civil service test land.

Truth be told just sit back, worry about passing your tests and do not worry about the guy next to you. People fail left and right on these backgrounds and psych tests.

Hope they hire you guys before they take on 40 new cops by merging the Park Rangers into their unit. Then you will have 40 new Deps all certified and all street ready.

No, every person with the same score gets canvased at the same time. then it just based on whoever the investigators find the most qualified, (or who the candidate knows) this is suffolk county you know.

08-27-2005, 03:19 PM
Is it at all realistic at this point that they would go back to the list and send letters to more people (what's left of the 90's and upper 80s) or does it look more and more like if you didn't get a letter already, you might as well start thinking about the next Dep test years from now.

The list is brand new so don't count yourself out yet. The class for Sept has been cancelled for the deps... It has to go throught he entire legislative process again in order for the money to be put back in the budget. They only have about 31 people right now that they are looking at for the next class and i believe they are all people who got 95 and above.

08-29-2005, 05:30 PM
When a class goes in for the deps it is usually very small....I would say that 20 would be an extremely high number at one time.....Dont get your hopes up for this job...It may be years before you get another letter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

09-01-2005, 09:31 AM
No one is being sworn in. What you see is merely a seminar introducing the job to prospective applicants.

The process of hiring takes months and it continues while the legislators and Levy decide how many slots can be filled. The processing of Deputy Sheriff candidates has been underway for some time. This was based on the assumpton of a September start. Corrections has a projected December start.

Same office but completely different jobs.Deputies go to the academy for 6 months,C/o's go to the academy for 14 weeks. The Commision of Corrections sets the officer to inmate ratio. If the inmates are there, the C/O's need to be hired to keep the ratio. That being said, there is no minimum staffing for the Deputies....

I scored a 96 on this test, went through orientation and turned them down. How are you supposed to live on that starting salary? I know it goes up and with overtime you do well, but that takes some years and a lot of sacrifice away from the family. I am not knocking the job, I would have taken it if it didn't mean possibly losing the house. Regardless, nothing is going to happen anyway until next year at best. Good Luck to all others.

10-04-2005, 05:29 PM
