Upon being upset in the Conservative Primary, Scannell enrages Conservatives by agreeing to the Richner's political demands of supporting Domestic Registry in the Nassau County Legislature. Republican and Conservative Candidate Chris Browne was used as a bargaining chip by the Richner's Herald News papers.

Keep Scannell in the Legislature
Voters have a tough choice to make in the race for Nassau County legislator in the 5th District. We did, too, and we’re choosing Joe Scannell.
All things being equal, we would have given Scannell’s Republican challenger, Chris Browne, the edge in this race. We think he would be an aggressive advocate for the people of the district. He’s got clear ideas, he’s specific and he’s responsive to questions. He has a tough, combative personality which may not win him friends but might well serve the people’s interests in the role of their advocate. We endorsed Browne in the last election.
This year, however, not all things are equal. In the county Legislature, they are actually an unequal 10 to 9; the Democrats have a one-vote majority. Should the GOP win in this district, the balance of power would shift, with one party controlling the Legislature and, we believe, the other party in the county executive's office. If that were to happen, there would be an impasse at every turn, similar to the unfortunate stalemate we witnessed this summer in the state Senate. That is unacceptable.
There are critical issues facing Nassau County. Development, fiscal solvency, excessive taxation, the environment, infrastructure — these and more need to be dealt with. Well-managed progress is at stake. This is no time for stalemate, no time for immovable objects to try to block the unstoppable train of change.
We believe that Joe Scannell has delivered and fought for his constituents in the 5th. He has brought in county money for his top priorities, which include environmental and safety projects in the district. On several issues, Scannell has revealed an independent streak, opposing County Executive Tom Suozzi’s proposal for layoffs in the county police department, Suozzi’s suggestion to move the 1st Precinct to Roosevelt, the potential loss of Nunley’s Carousel to a private organization, and the consolidation law promoted by Attorney General Andrew Cuomo and Suozzi. Scannell has proved that he is willing to stand in opposition to his party for what he believes is right.
He admits that he hasn’t always been right. He told the Herald that he has listened and is flexible. He acknowledged that he’s not perfect, and makes mistakes. A case in point is the domestic registry that he says he will now support. And he has also promised to repeal the county’s new — and reviled — energy tax as soon as sales tax revenues return to pre-recession levels.
We urge Scannell to continue meeting with and listening to constituents and to turn his ideas into action in the Legislature. We also encourage him to increase his visibility in all areas of the district and to take on more of a leadership role.
Both Browne and Scannell are highly qualified for the job they seek, and residents would be well served by either candidate. We believe this race will be close, which is all the more reason for voters to turn out on Nov. 3, and cast their ballot for Scannell.
Scannell Slammed!

Unlike the deep yellow journalistic rag Newsday, at least the Hearald attempts to preserve some intellectual honesty in dealing with an educated Nassau County electorate. What they are really saying is that Chris Brown is clearly the superior candidate and the better choice for legislator! It just so happens that the editor (a democrat) still thinks that Suozzi will win and would prefer to see more harmony (read: rubber stamping of anything he wants). However, all bets are off that Suozzi gets a third term. Does the Hearald have no problem with a 10-9 democrat legislature with Mangano as County Executive? To avoid any hypocrisy here, they should have left out their biased predictions and merely endorsed the man that they feel is better for the district. Actually, they did just that, and any intelligent reader and voter will understand. The endorsement is actually strongly for Christian Browne. That is who deserves your vote (along with Mangano for County Executive).
Awesome 4 Browne

Browne will win and be in the majority with Mangano as the County Executive.
Sounds great!
The Herald did not endorse Scannell last cycle, so that Democratic crap does not fly. Joe is clearly the better candidate, the more every learns about Chris the more you want Scannell. Joe beats Browne. Suozzi crushes Mangano and the ledge stays 10-9.

Clearly, Browne is the better candidate and they say as much in the body of the editorial. It is only the notion that Suozzi somehow gets re-elected that change the overall tune. Not exactly a glowing endorsement for Joe "can I start again?" Scannell.
Leg: 11-8 GOP
Ed Mangano is County Exec.
Scannell Criticized

You know, you are absolutely right. The editor is a masterful writer and if you read between the lines, it is easily seen that Scannell is NOT really endorsed. Browne is the favorite, but he feels it is prudent to keep Scannell there IF (IF IF IF) Suozzi should win. In my opinion, this has the following effect: Dems vote for Scannell (unless they are fed up with him and Suozzi), Reps vote for Browne, and intelligent independents primarily side with Chris Browne. Looks like the district wins if Scannell is removed.
bye Joe!!!!

Joe, I am so glad that you told the truth about who you really are, you are a lying phony liberal democrat. I promise you this Joe, you are going to lose. I will work harder to defeat you. Remember Luann , I told you Joe was a liar. Nothing has changed. At least he admitted it.

I agree. Scannell is toast.
Thank you Mr. Browne and Ms. Hadrick for exposing Joe Scannell and his pet project (re-location of first preceint lease agreement) in today's Newsday, it was a real eye opener story and shows once again that Scannell has got to go.

What positions besides the TOH Zoning Board has Browne held that would qualify him for the legislature.
Browne's smart

I don't know his resume, but he's definitely a smart guy. From what I heard, he'll be a great county legislator.

Chris Browne is an attorney, long time resident of Rockville Centre, married with a 3 year old son, physical conservative in his way's, worked as an assistant DA in NYC under the Guillani administration and now is employed as an attorney in private practice, and if elected will put the people first, The 5LD need a person like Cjhris Browne.

The Herald is like Newsday, they both suck, for the herald to endorse Scannell just proves how disconnected they are from reality

Newspapers are mostly controlled by Wealthy Liberals! They love spending other peoples money. Why wouldn't they support Liberal, Gay Marriage proposing Scannel. He's their Boy! Just like Rice, allowing Convicted Drug Dealing Felons another chance.
Newsday Endorsed 2 Republican Legislators out of 19 this week. WOW, I'm sure other people counted too.
The only endorsement that counts is the VOTERS ENDORSEMENT. And this will be a great Republican YEAR!
Maybe Scannel can post pictures of Himself with O'Bama or Paterson. George Bush days are over, smell the coffee, or is that the smell of Scannel's Campaign?
