No-Show Joe Belesi Skips Every Debate in 14th

[All I need to know]

I was at the debate last night in Farmingdale and Mejias was there, along with other democratic candidates but not a single Rep. showed.

Mejias pointed out that out of the 4 debates held in the district Belesi skipped every one. Even the League of Women Voters debate.

What kind of candidate doesnt show up for any debates? One who knows he he would get torn apart - this guy is loosing, no doubt about it.

Other than News 12 Debate, the rest are a total waste of time! Your supporters show up, your opponent's supporters show up. A total of 30 - 40 people in the room, they're a waste of time.

Thirty years ago every seat would be taken and people would be standing, today people don't have time. Stand in front of a supermarket you'll meet 100 times more Voters.

would say that Belesi did well in that debate. He had no new ideas, avoided the question on housing, which Mejias listed a number of programs he and the county offer to seniors and first time homebuyers, and was pounded for taking 2 paychecks of taxpayer money totaling $100,000+ a year.

Most of the time on these boards its "oh, this guy kicked this guys ass" - your best hopes for Belesi is that he was "equal" to Mejias.

Get real idiot. Belesi lost the debate, is not a strong candidate and will loose in November.

As a registered Independant I don't take sides, I kind of listen, observe and follow my gut on who to vote for. I am disgusted by the obnoxious mailings by BOTH Mejias and Belesi. What a waste of $$$-day after day, week after week the mailbox is full of this crap.

That being said, I also watched the News12 debate and Mejias easily won. He had answers while Belesi looked uncomfortable and, well, old. Also, Nassau cops and their incredibly high salaries (and egos) are not exactly fan favorites these days, and Mejias hammering away on the disability pension ain't helping Belesi. While I am not 100% sure who I wil vote for yet, I have to say the pendelum is weighing on the democratic side as Belesi has not delivered anything of substance or said anything convincing. Next time the republicans should look at supporting a young person, male or female- it's a different generation now on Long Island.

Whether you "like" cops and their salaries or not, nevertheless Mejias, as you said hammered away at a decorated Vietnam vereran and retiree of the NCPD.
The man is entitled to his earned retirement pension. That he also has a mere $30K job is peanuts. It is not at all as it is falsely billed by the sleazy dems as "double dipping patronage." I think it is honorable that he is working as well as getting his EARNED retirement.

Consider Mejias' wavering loyalties. When or if Mangano wins for CE, might Mejias only then switch back again to being a republican for his own convenience? Party switchers always draw suspicion. Just look at that whack job Nina Bastardi for example. Anyway, can you also trust Mejias to keep your taxes and county waste as low as possible? Democrat candidates are typically not very reliable in these respects, and we the people then suffer the consequences.

I am also a decorated Vietnam veteran and retiree of the NYPD and can only say that he put his time in and thats about it. He came on around 1969 when being a cop was a piece of cake and the GOP, especially under Gulotta, gave away generous benefits to the pba for their support. They did not earn them or deserve them. Anyone can get into a car accident, milk it out for years and then retire when the gettin is good. His pension and retirement benefits while totally legal, are representative of a time when the GOP screwed the taxpayer while keeping themselves engourged at the the public trough. Its ashame that the public has now got to pay for a corrupt political system and Belesi is the shining example of that past corruption.
