In the 1st Precinct we had a Mechanic, BRUCE. The guy was unbelievable. He would do anything for anybody. He would fix every car in almost the same day, including painting the wheels. Every car had hubcaps, car number plates you name it. He went to any and all extremes to keep that fleet running and looking sharp. After POs or others left the precinct, they would bring thier cars to Bruce. He wouldn't turn anyone away AND still do the precinct cars. Bruce was loved by every PO and on up to every Inspector that passed through the 1st precinct. Then what happened to Bruce that happens to alot of people, the county screwed and handcuffed his work ethics. So Bruce retired. He is probably the only civilian employee to recieve a total formal walkout of the precinct with over 100 PO's on up to Chiefs in dress uniforms, pipe band and a total salute. Although I have not met the new mechanic yet, He aint no BRUCE.

Maybe you should re-consider that statement...That this SCPD mechanic did not work on other vehicles while he was on the clock...As he off duty, doing this on his own time and even more so, while he was not on the job at the 1st.
I hear that the new Dodge Charger is the next SCPD patrol car

No one is going to the chargers- too small to begin with and with everyone using crowne vics you can get parts in a heartbeat
I hope they give you guys VW Beetle's. Nice and roomy, yeah.

Yeah, they'll blow the doors off your Pinto. Or do you drive a Pacer?

Really like I care what car I'm being paid to drive 52+ a hour. You want me to drive a beetle? No problem, but dont expect me to have paperwork, cones, life preservers, dog noose, hachet, shovel, flares, emt crap...oxygen, defibrillator, etc and to transport my arrests. I guess we'll have to hire more cops who drive around and hand out paperwork and transport prisoners....................
As long as it has a/c who cares?

Wrong.

NYPD already has a few in service.

No you are wrong, nypd has had them for a while, the topic is if scpd and other agencies in suffolk were going to chargers, the county looked at them, and felt they were too small.
No one in suffolk will be using the chargers.
Stick to the topic.

I do believe the original post said NO ONE is going to the chargers.
That statement is wrong. NYPD is using chargers.
Now if the original poster said no one in Suffolk..........
Or no one in Nassau, then it would be a true statement but they didn't.
So I stand by my post.

Reply was based on county looking into other cars for its fleet, for scpd the deps, probation, etc.
From what I understand the NYPD is testing a small number of Chargers to see how well they perform in the field. They haven't "gone" to them and are not "using" them as main fleet vehicles. The Chargers have a limited amount of room available to fit the radio and computer. Trunk space and rear seat space are also limited when you consider the large amount of equipment that must be carried around. The issue of mechanical reliability is only one facet of the issue. The Crown Victorias have ample room for all the equipment and have proven to be mechanically reliable.

I second that. Bruce was by far the BEST mechanic and a gentleman. When I worked in the 1st Pct. my roof rack wasn't working. Bruce was off that day and I had to respond to the morons at the PD Garage. One mechanic took a rubber mallot and smashed it against the roof rack in an attempt to make the lights rotate. This was all in vain.
The next day, Bruce fixed the roofrack the proper way. He was the best!!!

What he was stating that after some officers were transferred/promoted out of the command, they would take their new command vehicles BACK to Bruce to have fixed.....properly.
That would be county police vehicles on county time.

Heard the New Impala is the way to go better seats and faster than the Crown Vic.
NYPD is testing 10 chargers on loan from Dam-Chys. a lot more money and a lot faster, nice ride but not $$$ practical

Yes, Bruce was tops. But remember that he was old school, had a great work ethic and was also a Dept employee prior to the powers that be tranferring all mechanics to DPW [biggest mistake going]. He had pride in HIS fleet (cause thats really what it was) and loved the job. The last guy (whose name I forget) was totally useless. Not completely his fault, since I believe he didnt wanna be there and followed the DPW job requirements (i.e. don't do as much as you can, only as much as they say you should do). This new guy there now (Rob) seems to have great potential and has been more on the ball than the last guy. Maybe not a Bruce, but I dont think that anyone can be a Bruce anymore, not with DPW rules. Remember, thats one reason why Bruce left. Anyway, the new guy seems ok. Give him a little while longer and see how he works out. I'll bet that he does fine.
As far as the new Chargers go........who cares? I don't. like the earlier poster said, gimme crap to drive...I'll drive it, it wouldnt be the first time.
Peace brothers, stay safe!
