View Full Version : Police Power For Nassau Sheriffs Department

What we need is police status for the Nassau County Correctional Department, this Sheriffs department Is the only one in the country that really has no police division. there are plenty of Correction Officers that would love to patrol the streets and keep them safe and would not mind getting extra training to do it, of course there are CO's who would rather stay inside of the jail and do care, custody, and control for the rest of their time at the facility. We have alot of professional men and women working at this facility, people who have learned the criminal mindset by working with criminals day in and day out we know what to look for and how they think. Most sheriffs departments make their people work the jail for a couple of years before they let them patrol the streets. If you ever watch cops you will see that in alot of areas all over the country you have the police show up at an incident and the sheriffs department. Come on Sheriffs lets make this a real law enforcement unit and let get some real respect.

funny, i used to see them at the restaurant right around the corner from the nc correctional center, they'd get off at 5pm drink until 3 am, and drive home drunk they'd often pull their guns out, off duty because they dont have on-duty, brag about how much money they made, and how they could do whatever they wanted because they were ''otj'' i dont think they're suited to be amongst humans, too many socializing problems
no thanks let them stay with the skels, keep them away from real people

Suffolk County SD really dosent have any police powers either. Correct me if im wrong, Suffolk County SD does not have a road patrol unit, they just happen to have full police officer powers so one of the 300 or so deputies can intervene if they happen upon a crime while doing their official duties. Am I correct or is their a patrol unit? If we include both deputies and CO's; Nassau and Suffolk are deff on the top 10 largest Sheriffs Dept's in the US or at least very close to making that list. Its time both county sheriff's got a patrol function, were probably the only urban/suburban counties without a sheriff's patrol division.

id agree, we dont need c.o.s roaming around our neighborhoods. they're not trained for that, its not like suffolk deps, that are full police officers, nassau's are just peace officers let them take the test and pass like all of us would have to.

if u r a c/o, then u must definitely be a newjack. if u want to run around and find dead beat deads or do whatever the sheriff's deputies do for bullsh*t money, then go take the damn test, or some other police test. i was in nypd before becoming a c/o and let me tell u something, u can have that police sh*t. i rather sit on my ass & roll around with a skid once in a blue moon, making $140k a year than be out there in the heat & cold, dealing with pain in the asses calling for the cops for the littlest bullsh*t things u could imagine. don't get me wrong, i enjoyed being a cop, but when u grow up and have a family and need to earn a good living in order to to survive on long island, u got to go where the money is at, and u will not find that anywhere except at the jail, ncpd, or scpd. so keep your mouth shut and get on the pop.

fyi wine gallery was the hangout for the cos from the e. meadow facility, its name became the gallery then something else. it was there favorite place, in other words, the closest to go and get blotto, close the place down, and drive home west bound in eastbound traffic at 3 am to be up by 6 am, because they were ''otj'' on the job, and their ''brothers'' ncpd would do anything for them. i and everyone in that hole suffered thru their bloated egos,i was a 17 year old busboy. we had to sit and listen to how with the 700 hours of o/t they'd clear 100k, buying something or other and thats why they're not drunks.
mr chics sorry i got your offduty time wrong, i'm glad you make a ok salary, you sound exactly like them, insecure, bragging about your wages and whatever new toy you are getting.
aas far as drunks go, im sure there are many out there, dont know any myself.
luis i was a nypd, as you put it a''real cop'',for 8 years before coming out here 5 years ago i like every guy i knew or know from nypd took the test to come out here wehter ncpd, scpd, scsd, even the scparks po. they only guys left are too old or couldnt pass the exam or are jammed up on something. two classes ago scpd had a total of 60 nypd guys; 2 from es, 1 sgt from iab,1 patrol sgt,2 detectives.the average class out here is over 50% nypd, hmmm
on the other hand my neighbors son, 26 years old who flunked the nypd pysche 3 years ago, with a 511, 1192.3 and a upm violation,on his record, within the past 7 years received a call last june from nypd recruitment asking if he was still interested.last i heard, they took his package hes now waiting to here from them, hmmmm.

yeah, the city is desparate, a lot of younger guys are looking as that as a training job to come out here, its almost a requirement.
the problem with the nypd job is its so easy to get jammed up even when you are a straight arrow, its almost not worth risking the jobs out here, since they wont take you if you have pending litigation.
sad state of affairs, they must address this sooner or later, it will not change on its own.
i agree, no offense to c.o.s their place is in the house with our customers that we provide for them. its a different world out here

give us a break, we are the redheaded stepchildren of law enforcement, we are the ones dealing with the scum of the earth for 8 hours straight. if you lock up 1-2 perps aweek you spend maybe 12 hours a month in the company of the people we spend all day with.why do you think we got to go pound a few brews?whine, so you've seen a bunch of us at our worst, that doesnt mean all of us think we are hot sh*t, and drink, brag and buy toys, some of us just go home and play with our kids.
i know we are the''bottom feeders'' and we dont ''deserve'' your salary, thats probably why guys like chic feel the need to brag, 140 a year for scpd is what 200 hours o/t? probably by the end of your contract, that'll be base salary!!!!
yes i know your hard work provides us with a job, just as hard if not worse, and we are dependant on your arrests to be employed.
cant we all just get along?
we all want the same thing,to go home and see our families

bottom line

I just want to know why sheriffs and correction officers don't have police powers?

Does this mean also park rangers and park police don't have police powers?

How about bay constables and village incorporated police officers?

The public really thinks all these law enforcement jobs have full police powers.(stupid us)

Cops for the most part deserve the pay they get. So NYPD should be up there with their breathren in the suburbs in salaries.

let me explain something to you. the sheriff's dept is made up of correction officers and deputies. they have nothing to do with each other. the deputies are police officers and the c/o's are peace officers. peace officer powers and police officer powers are basically the same thing, except there is a difference in arrest powers/procedures. read the law books.
park police officers are police officers. park rangers i believe are peace officers. capish? to make it easy for you, if the job title has the word "police " in it, then they are police officers.
and to wine gallery boy, thanks for cleaning up my drunken mess.

Lets get back to reality. The C/O's staying in the jail and transporting and doing all that we do well. Let the Police stay where they are doing the good job they do.

If you want to do Patrol take a PD test. If you want to serve petitions and do family court take deputy test.

C/O's do inmate related jobs-all inmate and jail related. Keep your eye on the ball. This is our game. The PD our brothers got the streets!!

I agree with Chic, Sheriffs Dept. members performing non-police functions should remain peace officers. You can't make everyone in law enforcement police officers.

With that said, I believe that in many aspects c/o's have a more difficult job than police officers, and I know that many of my brethren agree. Many officers I have talked to have said "they [c/o's] can keep their money, I don't want to be locked up for ten years of my life."

I also have never had any bad experiences with c/o's, or view there jobs askance in any way; c/o's are law enforcement professionals who perform a very valuable service. And yes, some c/o's enjoy a pop or two after work but who cares, does that diminish their contribution to the criminal justice system?

funny how life is, 15 years ago, i made my living helping to serve your peers. now im all growed up and you and your peers are dependent on myself and my peers to exist. without our work both with arrests, and the investigatory work that leads to other commands making arrests, your job would nt be needed.
ive never seen c.os outside a work atmosphere since then, but i'll say they are nothing but respectful to pos. i dont know if these guys were just very insecure and had to act like that, or the dangerous nc inmates were getting to them.
it was my pleasure to clean up after you, but even more it was my pleasure to ''fetch'' your drinks, made them myself, in the bathroom... i mean bar, cant reveal my special ingredient, but all the cos seemed to like it,lol, as did every other employee and bar regular that was part of the joke, ha

C.O.'s will never get police status in NYS. They do not need it. They have police powers pursuant to their special duties which is watching inmates.
