Does Patchogue Village employ any Peace Officers? I was recently told that they are Peace Officers, carry guns "on their shield", make arrests that are arraigned in front of a village justice, and enforce V&T. Is this the way of the future, call your department constables and start your own police department? If so I think all towns and villages should do that and we could reduce the number of overpaid Suffolk cops we need.

Don't you read the other threads. Patchogue village can call their code enforcement anything they want , they can change their name to constable but they are still not peace officers. The NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services, MPTC still DOES not allow them on the Peace Officer registry as of now. They don't carry on their badges , they need permits to carry and although they might have attended training they are still not certified as peace officers. Maybe someday they will but none of the small villages within the police districts are recognized as peace officers by the state now.

I was recently told by an employee of Patchogue Village that the pending lawsuit is crap and that they are legit. Carry on their shields, arrest powers, V&T powers, etc. Was just wondering if something changed, or if anyone heard something different. Sorry if I offended anyone with my inquiry (Mary). Apparently they are all being told they can carry due to their status, without a permit. Why doesn't Suffolk County get involved if they are carrying illegally?

it is incumbent on the local gun shop owner to verify the legal status of anyone who presents a shield and ID card before they will sell them a pistol. The gun shop owners know who they can and can't sell to. Not to mention that they have to show a legal transfer on their books. Those books are inspected by Federal, State and County cops periodically. I strongly doubt a dealer would jeopardize his livelyhood. I do know first hand that I have heard a Patchogue Village Code enforcement officer who was a retired city cop refer to himself as "Police Officer XXXXX of Patchogue Village". They make car stops for the Patchogue Village Code, which coincidentally mirrors the NYS VTL in some areas.
A few years ago they were definately not peace officers, they did go through training and carry on a permit. I would be surprised if that changed as the state didn't seem to want to give them status. Anyone can call the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services and ask if they're on the registry at this time. As far as buying on their shield "I smell BS" is right and I doubt any gun dealer would allow it if they weren't peace officers unless they have a permit.
