If you wanted to pick up some milk late at night, the last place you'd want to go would be In & Out Deli on Straight Path, said residents who live near the Wyandanch convenience store.

The store was a shambles of debris and exposed wiring, with an empty meat locker and near-vacant shelves whose scattered goods "were thick with dust because nobody was buying anymore," said Teri Shelton, 56, a long-time Wyandanch resident.

That's because the real business was going on in the parking lot, where for more than 10 years, residents and Suffolk police said, people looking to score drugs, roll dice or party turned this corner into a crime-ridden, all-night hangout.

Despite more than 500 calls to this location in the past year and a half, police said they were often unable to bring charges and had to tell loiterers just to move on.

What Babylon Supervisor Steve Bellone called "this deli's reign of terror" ended last week, when inspectors from the town's quality-of-life task force shut it down after a Friday morning raid. Officials said the raid generated more than 30 fire, building and zoning violations - including open kerosene cans and what appeared to be a bedroom set up in an abandoned walk-in refrigerator. "This establishment is closed, and it will not be reopened," Bellone said at a news conference yesterday.

Local residents who gathered yesterday outside the store expressed relief. "We thank God that this place is [closed] down and that we can bring something" new in to benefit the community, said Annette Cupid, 51, who lobbied the town for two years to do something about the site.

The deli's lessee, identified by town officials as Rukhsana Mir, had previously responded to community complaints by saying that she needed to make a living and that these were her customers, said Bishop Darron Allen, pastor at Salvation and Deliverance Church across the street. "Sometimes at night you would drive through and think this is a party," he said. "One hundred people on this property at two or three in the morning, drinking and smoking."

Town officials met with the building's owner, Walid Rabie of Farmingdale, yesterday afternoon and said he indicated he would get rid of his current tenant. Rabie did not return calls yesterday. Newsday was unable to reach Mir.

Yesterday, town employees taped up signs declaring the deli's portion of the one-story brick building unfit for human occupancy. The takeout restaurant next door remains open.

In one part of the article that Newsday printed, it quotes one person as saying that this was going on for 10 years. I find that very, very hard to believe.

Goes back to at least the early 80's. I grew up in Deer Park and if you drove past that deli on a Friday or Saturday night from 11:00 or so on there would be a throng of low-lifes hanging out there, and you knew they weren't there to buy soda.

Closing that place down was like stepping in a puddle of shitt, it goes splat and goes all over the place. Where do you think that the drug dealing sons and daughters of PaPa Wyandanch have gone. Evaporated into the ether?

The problem disperses to be born another day, like the day after the "big" operation.

A localized tactical nuke would have been a better option.

There is no solution for the sub-culture of life in the "commoonity." Forty years and several trillion dollars in "programs" have proven this.

You have to understand the culture. They're not like you and me. These people are brought up thinking crime is a natural part of life, and going to jail is like you and I going to motor vehicle. It's like a family reunion in jail, woohooo!, 3 meals, one hour of ball, and all day gambling once 'my girl' gets enough money for a bus in order to get her fat ass to the jail to drop off the commissary money (Yes, that's the state's welfare in action). Not to mention the free medical and dental, especially for those 'toof-aches'. We give them toothpaste, but it's only used to hang up pictures.
Trust me, this state tries VERY hard to take the sting out of 'crime and punishment'.

So an attaboy to the SCPD for attempting to clean up an otherwise hopeless situation. If nothing else it's good to see these people inconvenienced.

Straight Arrow you obviously believe in what you are saying. i am here ti inform u that u are wrong in your beliefs. People like Russell Simmons do not advocate for drug dealers white or black , rich or poor , so called white collar criminals neither for the low life criminals. For the leaders in the black and latino community its about the mistreatment and violation of human rights. The racism and prejudice that makes one to believe that all people are to be judge by the color of their skin, or the community from which the come from. There are many people who have written to leaders and protested places and the things that go on in this community. I have personally offered several times to make a buy drugs from the deli as a part of a sting operation. I knew the lady who ran the place and i knew she would have sold me the drugs because she was selling drugs from behind her counter. Then she was going home to her big house in a well secured area in a well to do town. Her neighbors thought she was a perfect cititzen with her perfect son in their perfect house. NOT. I informed the police department and legislator Maxine Arnold (may she rest in peace)about that store. I attended meetings and other people from the community have complained. Nothing was done until now..i still wonder why this store was finally closed. I know that my message is not going to change your beliefs but placing blame never brings forth a resolution. It is hard to understand something that is unfamiliar. Allot of people outside of these communities feel that the people in "wyandanch" are hopeless low lives. yes its true some people are misguided and their role models are not positive but is it the child's fault because of the conditions they were born into. There is so many things to consider and if you are a police officer you need to be more compassionate for others who are less fortunate. There are allot of people who never get out of that mentality of feeling that their situation is hopeless. Since you are so straight forward and you have all the answers when was the last time you gave some of that wisdom of yours to a child in need of guidance. If you can help to save one child from the ghetto then that would be one less person in jail. If that is all you see around you then you will eventually feel like that is your destination. yes these people would love to be able to see a way out of thier situation and some are fortunate enough to have done so. Then they are those who rely on talent and those that feel selling drugs would get them ahead of things. The only thing that is so available and easy to do in wyandanch is 2 things , Sell drugs and go to jail. There is no boys and girl clubs, no shopping malls to hang out at, no roller skating rinks, no community programs like cheer leading, gymnastics, dance, all these things they
have to go out side the community to get. If the wyandanch end of straight path was rebuilt into a sunset plaza type environment they drug dealers and addicts would have to crawl into the woods or operate more secretly like in the "wealthier neighborhoods". You do realize there is drug dealers and addicts everywhere even in blue uniforms right?. Lets not forget about the Suffolk county police officers who were using and selling steroids....what makes them better then the pusher on the corner "the color of their skin, the clothing that they wear or maybe their financial status? There is good and bad everywhere if all we can do is help one person at a time that would profit so much more then finger pointing criticizing and laying blame would. Why bother you ask and I ask why not? What would it hurt? Jesus came from the ghetto and when he was not teaching in the synagogues he wore his dirty carpenters suit, becuase he was from the ghetto allot of "rich Folk" didnt recieve him well they asked questions like "could any good thing come from nazareth"? Yes it can and did just like good things are and will come out of Wyandanch.... I am one of those good things....

Well watchful eye why don't you go inside the place if you wanna know..It has been the only bar that has stayed open for the past 20 years without any problems..It is a motor cycle club cant black people ride Harley's too. The people in there are very nice and they don't tolerate DRUGS, DRUG DEALERS or any other nonsense. And yes they do welcome all colors and races. The reason you don't see the gates open because you are not looking at the right time. they have members only hours and hours for the public on the weekends...Its not a 24 hour public bar...The guard is at the door to make sure no weapons and drugs are bought into the place...Its a must in that kind of community to search people on nights that they are open to the public.
