OPINION: Police already have been reaching out in Suffolk
September 16, 2009 by LOLA QUESADA
Suffolk County Police Officer Lola Quesada is the special assistant to the police commissioner for Hispanic affairs.
Despite what you may be reading, healing is well under way in Suffolk County.
The recent Southern Poverty Law Center report on Hispanic immigrants in Suffolk outlined several supposed changes that should be made to promote and improve tolerance and acceptance in our communities. It's unfortunate that the center failed to reach out to the police commissioner to find out that we already do all the things suggested - and more.
In fact, we began to make inroads before the Southern Poverty Law Center became involved. Two Hispanic officers were promoted to top positions in the two precincts with the highest Latino populations. In addition, numerous community outreach efforts - such as placing a Spanish-speaking officer on a foot post in downtown Patchogue and appointing Hispanic clergy liaisons at all seven precincts to meet regularly with commanders - are allowing us to break down communication barriers.
These steps and others, including the creation of public service announcements and a school-based curriculum to promote acceptance, have come at the direction and with the full support of County Executive Steve Levy and Police Commissioner Richard Dormer.
In Suffolk County today, there is a consistent view across the entire police department that all officers are responsible for protecting everyone in our communities - regardless of differences in ethnic backgrounds, legal status or spoken languages.
My job - educating Latino immigrants about their rights - is made much more difficult by some activists. For example, I recently saw one high-profile activist on a Spanish-language television station. During his interview, the activist repeatedly stated that the police don't care about the needs of the Hispanic community.
He even went so far as to say that Hispanics cannot trust the police.
I was deeply offended. Not just for myself, as a Latina police officer, but also on behalf of the Hispanic community. He foolishly didn't consider the unintended consequences his words could have. Many have told me they feel they are getting mixed messages and they don't know to whom they should listen. That's a shame.
Some people I meet in the community have heard various advocates say that the police ask crime victims about their immigration status. But, by policy, we cannot and do not. We are here to help crime victims, regardless of their race or legal status.
The release of the Southern Poverty Law Center's report was treated as a major media event, even though the study misrepresents Suffolk's hate crime numbers and creates the wholly false impression that the racial climate in Suffolk is worse than in other parts of the country.
If you listened only to the SPLC, some local activists, and newspaper and television reports, you'd think Suffolk is the only place where hate crimes occur. But just a few weeks after the Marcelo Lucero killing in Patchogue, another Ecuadorean immigrant was murdered in a hate crime in Brooklyn. And on the same day the SPLC had its news conference, police in the Bronx were investigating four hate crimes against Hispanics that had occurred there the week before.
Some immigrant activists have centered their attacks on County Executive Levy because they disagree with his opposition to illegal immigration. They have attempted to tie this policy difference to acts of hate committed at the hands of others - although both the county executive and the police department find such acts heinous and intolerable.
Instead of emphasizing the negative, we could make greater progress by recognizing the tremendous outreach that is under way. It's already taking root in our schools, churches and communities. We are banding together to build strong and harmonious bridges. Working together, we will continue the healing.

suffolk cops are so jealous of each other it is disgusting. they eat their own, and are such wimps that they have to come on this board and bash each other, rather than saying anything to each others faces.
these guys beat down anyone who works, anyone who makes arrests or writes tickets to make the streets safer. trust me, none of them have ever broken a sweat at work, and hide in their air conditioned cars all day long. worth 125K---not even close--not worth a city cops salary.

That now falls into the realm of not my problem. She isnt the 1st or last to be in the right place at the right time. These positions are short lived, and she certainly will be expendable once this dies down, or replaceable when the county exec regime ends.
What this shows is that levy and crew will appoint whom they see fit, without regard to their qualifications, and despite the rhetoric about "tit" jobs, cutting the fat, putting more cops on patrol to save money and refusing to promote officers, will do otherwise for the pr effect.
You got to congratulate her, she used the system got ahead, and now is the problem of the taxpayers who will be paying for her take home car, and detectives shield and wondering who the fuck she is.

I actually was congratulating her, nort because she was a standout cop, but because she played the system and got ahead.
If you want to use her and her 5-10 arrests a year as a springboard to bigger and better things be my guest.
I have no delusions of ever being promoted to an assistant to the commish. It took me 7 years to get out of patrol. I average 80 arrests a year. I'm quite happy where I am, and understand the powers that be. I'm just the wrong sex and ethnic background. But i'm very happy in my detail.
I wish her the best, and hope you enjoy paying her salary to attend bruncheons, and drive around and give speeches in her county car.

Its more like indifference. Dormer and crew claimed they would not promote due to "hooks" or political correctness. This is more of the same. Do you really
think the majority of the rank and file are sitting around waiting for their phone to ring? That someone is going to call for them to get a suit and tie monday to friday take home car do nothing job?
hahahahahaha
I can think of 20 hispanics cops who actually work, and have a body of work behind them that earned that postion over her.
Maybe she will be a competent advisor, maybe not.
Either way you the taxpayer is footing the bill, not me. you should want to know what made her the best cop for that job.
Lord knows it wasnt her "activity"
Liike the other posts state, its a bs job public relations job, it will have no impact on any other area, that taxpayers are footing, and we now have another slot to fill on o/t.

From todays Newsday article:
In a surprise encounter, Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy met for the first time Sunday with the family of Marcelo Lucero, expressing condolences to the slain Ecuadorean immigrant's brother and mother at a Catholic service in Patchogue marking the first anniversary of Lucero's death.
But Lucero's brother, Joselo, said he was taken aback by Levy's presence.
"I feel like I was ambushed here," Lucero said after the service at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Patchogue. "There are people I don't want to talk to."
Asked if he meant politicians such as Levy, Lucero said yes.
The picture of Lucero's brother giving Levy the cold shoulder while his flunkie Lola gets her mug in front of the camera is definetly worth the price of the paper today. It's just another in a long line of examples showing Levy's lack of class in pursuit of political gain. If he wanted to talk to the family, he should have had his girl Lola set it up privately. Instead he tries to pull a cheap photo-op in a church of all places. Levy knows no shame. I hope Lola is comfortable lying in that bed she made for herself.

more from newsday:
Organizers of the event said they were surprised Levy came, as only Patchogue politicians were invited. Levy arranged to come through Patchogue Village Mayor Paul Pontieri, the mayor said.
"I probably should have said something" to the Lucero family, Pontieri said. "But I didn't even think of it."
Ya think??? That mayor sounds like a real genius too.

After the service, Levy left without taking questions. In a statement released through spokesman Dan Aug, Levy said, "I continue to extend my hand and my heart in seeking to work together with anyone who would like to build bridges to heal our communities."
he then added "by anyone, i mean my inner circle of political flunkies who never question me. Of course I would never work with any of the following; anyone with a hispanic sounding name, the legislature, any of the county employees unions, or any other politician who disagrees with me."
