The PBA did not get a contract. All they did was agree to give 12 million dollars to Levy in exchange for not giving anymore jobs away. And foolishly the PBA gave up their right to appeal the PERB decision. They are going to lose and now they have no recourse.

When levy tried to force the immigrant deputy thing pba opposed it 100%, that is federal ins "police work" not ours.
That btw was the beginning of the war that led to us losing hwy, etc.

I am very pro police..... ........ Choosing to not enforce laws and saying its "Someone elses job" especially when that someone else is as inept as INS was a bad move.... I can't stand seeing all of these illegals running around, congregating and begging for jobs..... I don't know whose fault it was (Police brass or PBA) but I wish someone could explain it better to me so I can properly place blame. .........
An unfortunate side effect of not enforcing the LAW has been to embolden these ILLEGALS to the point were they now stand up on T.V. and say how you don't do your job and protect them.. This is going to bight you in the A$$ hard......

I know some of those illegals you menation above that can write and spell better than you!!! What's your excuse they stole your seat in HS so you couldn't make it to english class and now they are stealing your job. There was never no crime in suffolk until they came alone too. Suffolk police was started because of the illegals. Lol!!!

I congratulate you on your humility. As you suspect, it is a very complicated issue and not a matter of a county agency "cherry picking" its responsibilities.
Deputizing local cops to perform federal duties would directly and immediately change the scope and character of local law enforcement. Instead of being accountable to local needs and wishes, it becomes instead answerable to federal agendas. Ever try to sue the Feds?
As has been noted elsewhere on this board, local police require the cooperation of its constituency in order to effectively provide police services. This includes the illegal alien demographic. Even they have to be confident that they can go to the police and report crime without being deported, the alternative is that crime / gangs will find a sanctuary in which to fester and explode into the rest of the population.
Local government doesn't have to condone illegal immigration, but it MUST extend to everyone within its jurisdiction, civil rights and basic human freedoms. ICE is responsible for enforcing the immigration acts. County police are responsible for enforcing local law. That benefits EVERYONE who lives here, including the above poster.

Whatever. The job to remove illegals is a federal job, not a county one. Just because they are undermanned doesnt mean we should take on that responsibility.
We cannot enforce the law. We do not have the manpower training or facilities to hold these people, are you willing to pay a few 1000 extra in police taxes for this?

Robbing a bank is a federal offense, but there's a parallel sate law that's usually enforced against the crime. There's no laws regarding immigration enforceable by local PDs.
Silly example, an illegal walks in the front door of a police station and admits to being a border crosser & is here illegally. All the desk cop can go is tell him to call ICE.
It will get worse before it gets better.

This is good news. Now that you are making millions I guess there is not much incentive to get involved in police work, aside from writing a few tickets and locking up some drunk who hit his wife.

Better not run out to the Benz dealer yet boys!
Check the facts.... seems now that we have this "agreement" in theory the arbitrator will be taking some more time to figure in a third year... which means he won't be releasing his ruling until December or January!
Then there's that 12 million in deferrals.... well if you do the math figuring the possible raise (about 3%/year x 2) you'll find that the retro, after each member gives up around $6500+, will be between $3000 and $4000 before taxes! Since the retro will no be paid until after January 1 we'll be paying full SS tax on it as well... so after all is said and done.... the retro checks will average about $2000 take home! Not really a monster check! And remember... the county is saving 6.2% on SS tax now by not paying out the raise but having it deferred!
Overall it's not really the great deal you think it is. But would you expect anything less from Levy and company? It's a nice deal for the PBA board.... some of which will be jumping ship very shortly... they lock in a nice raise on their SCAT pay (that third year) and really don't have to defer anything if they leave in early 2010! For new guys on the job... it's a long play with the deferred money!
Take a GOOD look at what the "agreement" says... when and if you ever get to see it in writing.... then make your mind up!
You don't EVER make deals with the devil.... he'll screw you every time.... and no doubt Levy will play this one out and make this "agreement" worthless!

Levys intitial deal 2 years ago was 10k in givebacks to senior guys, and another 5k for new hires
scpd intitial offer was 4 years 2.5% going to 3%.
Levy requested about 5k in holiday pay lag last summer.
scpd agreed to give it up when levy agreed to not giving away police jobs.
Either way we have to give the lag up. The soa gave up money right out of their pocket. We wont.
We arent giving up anything as the basis for our contract remains in place.
This isnt a great contract by any means, but it is next to impossible for levy to claim any type of victory.
He made concessions, he failed to live up to his word, he negotiated, he "dealt with the devil" he tapped, he gave in.
he is the one raising taxes next year...again.

The point is Lebie will "claim" he got the PBA to take concessions worth over 12.5 million, then he will say that the raise you were given was based on an arbitrators decision of which he had no control over. So he will claim victory and rightfully so.
On another note, the PBA said we would never give up, and never give in to the lag payroll request. But we are, we are doing exactly what the Correction Officers did in their agreement with Lebie, we are deferring our retro or a portion thereof - so in the end - we caved, just like everybody else. After all the big talking and tough sound bites - WE CAVED TOO!

And remember... Levy wanted (needed) 6.9 Million from the PBA under his budget deal.... Jeff and the boyz are looking to give him 12 MILLION.... that's a BIG number for what we're getting "back"... I'm a short timer... so the deferred money really isn't an issue to me... and retro was never a given in my mind... but for the new guys.... and folks with 10+ years to go.... this deal sucks!
Heard from my delegate that the county wording on the deal was unacceptable.... what a shock... so we DON'T have a deal yet.... and even when we see it.... it won't be worth the paper it drawn on!
When you deal with the devil you ALWAYS lose!!!! Hope Jeff and the boys realize that!

wrong, fraylers postion is that we do lag IF there were assurances that no more jobs would be lost.
the arb rulings is something levy agreed to, anyone can see that.
