islip ambulances

Just curious, has anyone else wondered how government officials allow private entities to run our local ambulance companies? In my opinion this is crazy who double checks to see that every dollar is spent wisely? With fire departments tax payers have the right to go to monthly board meetings and see what is going on and how dollars and cents are spent, why can’t tax payers do the same with their local Ambulance Company? I am a member of a local Ambulance company in Islip town and see crazy things go on they buy trucks that are not needed, buy vehicles so over sized that most members cannot drive them safely on a few occasion members ask questions about the spending of the money and they say its tax dollars if we don’t spend it all for the end of the year we won’t get it next year, IF this is true that should be changed why can’t that money be put in an account for an emergency? Why can’t they hold that money over and possibly get less the next year? It is time officials wake up and over see Private volunteer ambulance companies, or make the companies open up meetings so public members can go and see how their tax dollars are spent.
