View Full Version : TEACHERS' SALARIES

Anyone interested in the salaries of teachers in your district?

Did you know you can find out every single salary at the cost of a few dollars at most?

You simply have to submit a "FOIL" request to the district. (FOIL = Freedom of Information Act) . By law, they have to provide it to you or you can sue them.

If you want to get sick and see where your tax money is going, call your district, ask for their version of the FOIL form in case they don't use the standard form and mail to them requesting all salaries in the district in alaphpabetical order.

Keep in mind the total compensation cost is substantially more than these salaries...pension contributions, medical and dental insurance, employer payroll taxes and insurances, etc...

You will see on an hourly basis that your kid's kindergarten teacher make more that the pediatrician and the music director is compensated like a CEO.

Check it out! FOIL, FOIL, FOIL!!!!!

and it is truly amazing. We also FOILed the administrators/directors salaries and talk about top heavy.......our contract is being negotiated as we speak. Our School Board just a couple of months ago gave the CSEA employees a "rollover" contract (1 year) and a 4% increase!!!!

And now they are trying to negotiate a fair and equitable contract with the teacher? What are they thinking. The teachers need to be told to kick in more on their health care AND take a lesser percentage raise.

Can't wait to see the outcome!!

It's unbelievable!!! We did the same thing in East Islip. The problem is the school board doesn't comply with the requests!!!! Under NYS law they have 5 business days to get you the information and can charge you 30-50 cents per page! Our big complaint was seeing how much the district wasted in litigating frivolous cases. The special ed director who makes more than $130,000 was denying services to autistic kids and kids who couldn't get into school because of their asthma due to the mold problems in the schools. The district was fighting and LOSING these cases wasting more $ than if they had just done the right thing to begin with. The special ed director has been under the gun and is now under review! It is a HUGE scandal and has been written up in many of the newspapers and been on News 12. We have some clueless administrators in East Islip who are pulling down BIG cash in addition to the TEACHERS! Our test scores are nowhere near good enough to be able to justify that pay!!! Most Suffolk districts are top heavy and top loaded and more than 75% of all operating budgets are salaries. So don't tell me that when I see my tax bill in East Islip that I shouldn't see red and it ain't because we are the East islip redmen enough is enough!!! Take back your schools from the money hungery teachers!!! Now be careful what sleazy districts like ours do is if your request under FOIL isn't specific enough they will copy everything under the sun to give you and try and charge you a big sum of $ to "teach you a lesson". Imagine the arrogance of that. If they are really being a pain in your a$$ then what you can do is either go into district office and give them a ream of paper from Staples (much cheaper) and tell them you will do the copying for them so as not to waste the taxpayers dollars or tell them that you want to review the paperwork first to determine what you want to copy. They will then HAVE to under NYS LAW schedule a time that you can go in to district office and sift through all of the appropriate files. Then you will have taught them a lesson! Good luck!

WaWaWaWaWa
Stop complaining about teacher salaries. You are all just jealous that the teachers in your school district make more money than you for only working half the year, having summers off, and being done with work by 3:00.
You can all shove it. Instead of complaing, go back to college, get a masters degree, deal with little brats all day like the ones you are ignoring right now in your house because you are too busy sitting on the computer and you leave your teachers to raise them (by the way...tell your kds to clothe themselves better when they come to school).
I am happy with my job!!! I am in my mid 20's, my base salary is well over 60,000 per year...after all the other B.S. things I can do before and after school that they are willing to pay me for, I will be able to make over 80,000 a year.
Again, sorry that you are jealous, but try doing my job. It is not as easy as you would think...putting up with your brat is the easy part. There is plenty of other BS that goes with it. Don;t knock it till you try it. I work very hard for my money.
Jealousy!!!

So let's see - your friends probably went to law school, b-scholl, med school, have real jobs making real $$. You have a cute salary, but at least you're home by three. But you have to wipe runny noses. So you add a post to a message board and expect people to be jealous of you, when really you're angry with your decisions. About right?

Hey I love my job as a teacher. You won't hear me complain. I make over 90k for sitting around in my office from 9-3 while the boys play B-BALL. Got to love it other than dragging out the balls in the morning, taking attendance every 40 minutes, breaking up a fight now and then, and picking up the balls at the end of the day it's great. I get to read all day. Thank you very much.

How could anyone complain about a job like mine? 180 days a year for cripes sake! Not to mention all the holidays off. Again thanks to all the taxpayers of my district. I wouldn't be where I am now without you.

Thought you were in Mexico. Anyway, what you seem to realize (good for you) is THIS IS ALL YOU ARE QUALIFIED TO DO. Your contribution to society consists of rolling out some basketballs! Why? BECAUSE YOU ARE INCAPABLE OF DOING MORE. Now stop embarrassing yourself by bragging about it.

Since you know so little about me I will enlighten you a bit. I am a fully qualified physed teacher, but I do what I'm told if you know what I mean. Secondly I was a carpenter before a teacher and I still work as one on my time off to help fund my true passion, fishing.
During the summer months My family and I vacation in Mexico where I enjoy myself while learning my "retirement trade" of "fishing guide". Although I will miss dragging out the big bag of b-balls, I think I will enjoy my fishing career that will keep me quite busy on Long Island as well as parts of South America.

I will certainly think of you Hog, as I "roll out the balls" in the future.

Hey is it spring break yet?

I am an East Islip resident, have been for 30 years.
I find it very funny that any year the School budget gets voted DOWN which might threaten the teachers raise.
The first thing these wonderful caring teachers do is
OOPS NO school buses, we need more money.
To me that shows there true nature. They come first and second, the kids come last.
As a Member of the local FD. I have been called out the the high school many times. Let me tell you about setting an example. It is often hard to tell which ones are the students and who the teachers are. What the hell happened to the teachers dress code.
One more thing to make my point.
Read back a few posts, Some JERK who professes to be a teacher.
calls the students
"spoiled Brats" That shows how much he or she cares.
Yes maybe some are brats, but to make a generalization like that
is way out of hand.

Teachers Smeachers

BOEs are going to have to listen to us the taxpayer, stand up to these unions and say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. We're capping stipends, we're making the top money makers contribute to their health insurance, and we're going to limit your buybacks for vacation and sick days...and we're going to return it to hardworking families and we're going to reinvest this money into education where it belongs.

07-20-2005, 08:04 PM
if we don't cut these salaries off at the knee in 10 yrs they'll be making 150k/yr. We can't afford this. I support teachers but we must do something about these mandated costs that guarantee a tax increase each year and wind up hurting programs and services key to educating kids.

07-26-2005, 06:38 PM
GO TO YOUR STATE AND FEDERAL LEGISLATORS! WHEN ARE PEOPLE GOING TO EDUCATE THEMSELVES BEYOND THEIR TAX BILLS TWICE A YEAR? Use the education you recieved to DO something instead of write posts here.

Here's some numbers to help put education in perspective.

The average tutor gets $70 per hour (give or take). Let's say each student receives 100 hours of service per class per teacher. That's roughly $7000 per required class. Times 5 mandated subjects for a total of $35000 per year. Sounds like college. The average tax payer puts in 4-6K in SCHOOL TAXES per year. For that you also get music, sports, clubs and free access to the buildings if you belong to an outside group and the right to complain in public forums run by volunteers. Just about $30 per day (school days)for all that and more.

We now spend about $2000 per year on gas per SUV.
Food for a family of 4 costs $15k PER YEAR. Car Ins, LIPA, Car payment and credit cards ALL cost more than education. Long Island is a tough place to live, but it would be a lot easier if you would stop trying to be pennywise and pound foolish.

I have often wondered why some of the kids act the way they do and now I know why. I wonder what you do for a living, insult people? Demean them? You are a real nice guy. Yeah, all teachers are leeches that suck society dry but just imagine what society would be like without teachers. I guess you probably haven't given much thought to that or anything else. By the way, you spelled leach wrong, it's leech! Your crassness is superseded by your ignorance.

Renegotiations
08-03-2005, 11:56 AM
Here's an interesting idea.
I'd like to make a list of the school districts who have teacher contracts up for renegotiation for the 2005-2006 school year. I think that we are going to see a start of a lot more tug of wars going on. My brother teaches in Patchogue-Medford, and they have a Superintendent who has never been a good friend of the teacher's unions of any of the districts he's been in. They're expecting a labor negotiation show down.

I support teachers and respect them for what they do for our children. But if we don't find new and better ways to compensate them and negotiate THEIR contributions to health insurance and retirement (young and old), and limit THEIR ability to buy back thousands and thousands of dollars in sick day and vacation buy backs our TODAY our budgets will keep going down and our children will get used to being educated on contingency TOMORROW.

08-10-2005, 12:10 PM
should be interesting.
