The Press of Manorville and Moriches published the figures yesterday. The community passed a proposed budget in May that included a 13.7 percent increase from the previous year. The board,which adopted the budget in late April,put it on the ballot without releasing an estimated tax rate because members said they did not have enough information to calculate the amount of state aid the district would receive. They blamed reduction in state aid, an increase in health insurance and retirement premiums and lost construction aid, money already spent to renovate the $23.6 million secondary school. The tax rate will increase from $150.61 to $208.36 per $100 of assessed valuation.

Although a 38% tax hike is huge, the BOE was right in what they said. It was a problem everyone had. Failure of our elected state officials to pass a budget (again),
continued failure of Pataki to get on their butts, and the state mandates the good Governor shoves down the throats of school districts i.e. health insurance and retirement. Many districts had their aid cut, no one knew what to ecpect and could only guess to get a local budget to the taxpayers.
Every district is different but before you rail the CM BOE, look up to albany and who you elect every year.
Wait till next year when we all have to foot the bill for NYC schools

We need to look at a few facts

First - all this complaining about Albany is a smokescreen for the school district. They could easily compute the tax rates using the previous years aid as their estimate. Then identify this on the bill noting that it will change based on aany change in aid from Albany. They dont include the numbers because they dont want the residents to see them.

Second - talk of unfunded mandates is crazy. Benefits are negotiated in the teacher contract. Pension costs are not an unfunded mandate but are a contract based necessity and the funding amounts is based upon the rate of return they earn (in general the stock market). Federal law dictates how much funding is required to maitain a sound pension plan.

I'm neither of those people, just someone making a comment and stating fact, however like I said a 38% tax hike is way too much and would not be tolerated in my district either.
I am in no way defending the CMSD, just stating facts that all districts face

Explain to me how the school board could not include the money needed to make up for the funds used last year from the reserve account (around 850K). They knew a year in advance they needed to increase taxes to make up the shortfall. Why did they not inform the residents before the budget vote?

McHeffy and crew have pulled another fast one. First, they cancelled the monthly public meeting. Then they hold a private hidden meeting with some locals the next day in the school. It is reported at that meeting that they announced they would not raise the taxes more then 4% in 2005.

When told that they had further violated NYS laws by holding a private meeting they said no we didn’t, we could not have since we made no decisions. Well what do they call announcing that they will not raise the taxes more then 4%???

Who do these people think they are? We should be happy with a further 4% increase in taxes?

A 4% raise on top of the 38.4% raise compounds out to a 5.6% raise. That would mean this school board has raised Center Moriches taxes over 46% in 2 years.

Who are these people kidding? We need to remove them and lower our taxes. The first way to do that is to cut the salaries of the highly overpaid administration, which has failed the taxpayers and the students!

I hate to spoil the witch hunt, but it was Timothy McHeffey that worked for the fire department, not Joseph McHeffey. Oh, and the meeting the other night was called and attended by a group of community leaders (including Ed Romaine) that wanted to help the district acquire more revenue instead of cutting. They asked the board to send some reps just like they asked the C of C, Civic goups MCC, etc. If you were not invited it is because you are not considered a community leader. There are a lot of people trying to help. What are you doing to help?

No witch hunts at all. Did you notice that the DA, Tom Spota has stated he has investigations into 6 more schools? From my calls to the DA's office I have been assured that CM is on the list due to the CPA firm they use.

I called Spotas office too. They said that almost every district on Long Island used the same firm and that alone didn't mean anything. They said it was sort of like saying that everyone that uses LIPA was bad.
I guess I see things differently because I have lived here almost 65 years now and have known some of these board members for 50+ years of that. They are good people and they have done a great job for my grandchildren going to school here. I am not going to do anything to hurt my grandkids and cuts like you are talking about will. This community is a better place since this board has been in place. Period. Just look at the town. 38%? Much too much. I am retired. I cannot afford it. But I really think that most people realize that the problem is bigger than this board and I will at least listen.

The board may be good people but to say they did a good job makes you out to a shill for them.

Center Moriches is a third rate school district at best. It now cost more to send a child to CM then any other school in Suffolk. You think that is doing a good job?

No other school district in Suffolk had to suffer the consequences of this boards failures. Even school districts that were being ripped off did not have this kind of tax increase.

This board should resign before we have to remove them.

As far as any one of the rest of the members of the FD know, only his brother worked for the District, as Treasurer. If Joe was employed by the District, what were his duties? Or did Greg not volunteer that information? You might want to ask a few more questions of Dispatcher Greg.

In nassau county district 20 , the Board VP has his wife as a teacher. I wonder if there are any other things that should be looked at such as who the part time SCOPE recommended employees are. I know that there are a few. Do they comply with the proper guidelines or is it taken care of.

center moriches board of ed is projecting a 5 percent increase. just like 2 years ago when they projected a 14 percent increase and they got smacked with a 38.4 percent increase. vote this budget down! they can do better! tell the board to fire all the new administrators they just hire for teh superintendent and let go of the dean of students right there it will save the tax payers money a lot of it.

It is very disturbing to see so much mis-information on these posts, and worse to see name calling, and personal attacks. I don't often read these just for that reason. These posts have lost their legitimacy because of it. Cemo did not predict a 14% increase and then give them a 38%- they gave no prediction at all of the tax impact in 04-05, what they gave was the budget increase. After a change in Administration the following year they predicted and gave a -2%(yes negative) tax increase, and this year are predicting a 5% tax increase. Look at their neighbors EM with a predicted 30% this year. No new administrators have been hired for the current Supt. , as a matter of fact he is one of the few that runs a district with no Asst at all. Cemo may have been the first but are not the last to suffer terrible tax impacts.
