View Full Version : Bellmore School Tax Screwup

Taxpayer

Newsday reports (11/17/04) that the Bellmore elementary school district administration screwed up royally by submitting the wrong amount of taxes due to the County Assessor, who went ahead and used this figure to calculate the tax bills. The amount submitted was off by $1.1 million dollars. Now that they've discovered their million "error" they need the County legislature and the Assessor to approve a new set of tax bills to be sent to residents.

Not so fast, maybe Dave Denenberg should hesitate for a while, until needed reforms in the district budget practices are implemented, the board agrees to an independent audit of the school budget and the person responsible for this f-up gives back the $15,000 raise the good people of this community don't know he got!

Of course, few people know about the screw up it because it appeared on page 47 of Newsday and the local newspaers are so far up the a-holes of the assministrators if they told them to jump off a bridge they would! So when homeowners get another school tax bill people are going to be so pissed off it will unbelieveable! This will be great community excitement, due right around holiday time!

Of course even this million dollar tax mistake shouldn't stop our self-described honest beyond doubt school board members from chirpping in again on the high standard of fiscal responsibility by which they say they conduct themselves with our money from awarding another $15,000 raise (10% increase) next year to the moron who made this mistake, nor another $16,000 raise (10% increase) next year to the non-PhD Superintendent who is a self-described "expert" on property taxes.

Bellmore needs serious change in the administrative lineup, including a good part of the school board itself. It needs a policy of honesty with regards to the school budget, really two school budgets becasue Bellmore taxpayers pay not just one budget, but two (Elementary District and a seperate Secondary District). And it needs a moratorium on school tax hikes!

This screw up now shows that taxpayers have been screwed once...screwed twice...screwed three times.

The boards response is this...What do we care, it's not our money!

Who the heck likes to pay taxes but at least they came out and admitted they made a mistake. Not like other schools that hide their problems and deny it. You are not paying more than you voted for! On the contrary, they lowered tax rates by not collecting the full amount they were allowed to collect based on the vote. I wish my district would make mistakes like that! They made a mistake, and are now going to re-tax everyone.....you think this is okay? People set budgets based on how much they owe, now the School district is saying, we messed up, so gives us more.

Hello, any heads rolling over there??? You really think this is ok???????

Au Contrar, a clerk in the Assessors office noticed the figure was nearly the same as last years and raised a question that trickled back to the district and from there leaked to Newsday. The Bd. wanted to sweep it under the rug, but the sunshine was too bright by then.

TAXES

The real truth of the matter is that this convenient "clerical" error is simply a back door tax hike! The budget passed was a 6.9% increase, yet Newsday reports the real tax hike is 8%. This "clerical error" is the 1.1 million being raked in for higher teacher salaries and added benefits!

Bellmore residents can expect to pay over $200 more (some folks in highly assessed homes $500 more!) in an unpreceedented tax grab!

Vote No on the next school budget!

Previous poster writes:

"They then reduced the levy that they were entitled to based on the community budget vote by $100,000."

Is that the remaining amount on the Business Superintendent's contract? Was he fired?

If not, then where did the school board cut $100,000 from. Their "fatless" and "fiscally responsible" budget presented for passage last May had surplus funds?

Where did the money come from....the children perhaps?

you dopes...they reduced the levy by $100,000 because they got more state aid than initially anticipated...this SAVED the taxpayers...not cost them! Be thankful they didn;t just leave the status quo...it would mena more taxes to pay.

Also...a "fatless" budget doesn't mean no surplus...a fiscally responsible budget MUST have some contingency funds buildt in for unexpected expenses...what if a boiler was to malfunction unexpectedly? The probelm with you people who post here is that you are clueless as to how to manage a business...and a school is a business...most pf you are clueless, but have big mouths!

Well it is start!

It is actually not that hard to understand if you have half a brain (maybe I am in the wrong place ). They underbilled the first half, will make it up on the second half, but in the end the $100,000 levy reduction means I get an $18 tax cut. Does not take a brain surgeon to figure that out folks. I agree with Dr. Lowe - all districts should make mistakes like this.

Maybe if the county would make more mistakes in my reassessent, or make a big mistake in allocating more and more of the levy to the residential homes (nice tax cuts for Bellmore businesses folks) - I can save $1,800 next year. Better yet, how about the state makes a mistake and starts giving Long Island what it is due in aid.

Then I woke up!

Who will pay for the county costs associated with fixing this mistake....the taxpayers.

Who will pay for additional mailings associated with dunning the taxpayers for the missing $1.2 million....the taxpayers.

You school administrator apologists have some nerve claiming the $1.1 million mistake will somehow save taxpayers money....you must have learned school finance at Hempstead High -- somehow extra charges will cost us less.....They really think taxpayers are stupid.

Well, if they are so gulible, let's hold a referrendum today on the budget mess....hear all the facts about the $15,000 raise to the guy who made a $1.2 million mistake and the $16,000 raise to his supposed "school tax expert" boss!

The school budget stopped being about the children years ago.. Now its about pay, perks and pensions for $100K teachers and administrators....who vacate the premises by 3:30 PM (gone...out a here...bye bye).

Send the narrow clique that controls the school board a strong message ..... vote NO on the school budgets in Bellmore!

My, my,,,everything is a scandal? They made a MISTAKE...they wrote the wrong number on the tax resolution...it was missed...it shouldn't have happened, but it did. I guess you never made a mistake? So, let's vote the budget down...that's real smart thinking...just put your school district into chaos...I bet the value of your house would go down...then, that would get your attention! You, UFSD 101,...are totally clueless...and jealous that you probably don't have the brains to become an educator...you're probably stuck in some job you hate, so take it out on the system!

Some Rich South Bellmore Jappo, Limosine Liberal Mediocre School Administration Apologist writes:

"Fact - The superintendents and business manager are amoung the lowest paid in the county. The Sup is 84 lowest out of 120 districts on LI. The business manager is the 2nd lowest in the county and handles IT. Their spending per pupil is pretty low (Herald says 5th lowest in the county) and the schools seem to be pretty good. Quit complaining"

Boo Hoo for our low paid $200K Superintendent. He's got one of the cushiest jobs in entire nation, only 1, 273 students (who seem to be from very educated families, but he can't seem to get the English scores up above the county average no matter what he does) in 3 school buildings, two assistant Superintendents (one of which apparently can't use Excel properly), an attorney on retainer, an accounting firm on retainer, experts and consultants in all sorts of esoteric and cost inefficent fields of dubious academic study, a bevy of office staff, three principals, their bevy of office staffs, dozens of teachers aids, hall monitors and bus attendents, and HE STILL HAS THE NERVE TO COMPLAIN THAT HE'S UNDERPAID.

Keep it up you sorry ass liberal, you are awakening the community single-handedly! Don't change a thing! I dare you, try raising taxes another 10% after this 1.2 million dollar mistake!

Given that folks tend to believe the information put before them unless competing info is available to discount its validity, I wonder if anyone has bothered to check if the info from the Bellmore SD is accurate. I mean, did the Business Manager really make a 1.1 million dollar "mistake"? Or, alternatively, did they under budget and thus need to come up with a way to finagle 1.1 million more from taxpayers...thus, the entire "he screwed up story" could be a scam, schennanigans to get more money? Who would check this, maybe the Assessor who now has to send out revised tax bills, or the Legislature, which has to vote on this mess?

To those who think the SD is telling the truth, I say....Remember Roslyn!

WE NEED TAX RELIEF. AND WE NEED IT FAST.

07-22-2005, 02:05 PM
I think we need to organize a commission with our local districts to form some type of legislative force to combat issues facing taxpayers...like businesses not paying their fare share. Something needs to be done with the increases in the teacher's pension at the state level its growing leaps and bounds just like our taxes and i'm failing to see the equity in this.
