View Full Version : Lindenhurst Incentive?

There was a posting detailing the huge cash buy out of teachers in Lindenhurst, where did it go? The public has a right to know about the spending of taxpayers funds to make cash payments to teachers, How much did the Board get for approving such huge payouts? How much is the Superintendent getting for such a huge payout? Where is OUR money going? Why are voices being censored?

There was a posting about the incentive, but for some reason it was removed.

First off, the Board gets NOTHING for approving an incentive. The Board members are elected, but there is no salary, stipend, etc. given to them. The Superintendent also gets nothing for recommending it to the Board.

The Board of Ed will be voting on a $40,000.00 incentive, plus unused sick pay, to get 30 teachers/administrators to retire. The Board originally tabled it until June 15th to vote on it, but it now has been changed to June 7th at 6pm at the Administration Building. Most people feel that the chances are very good that it will be approved.

Some factual information: It will cost the district 3.8 MILLION dollars for the incentive package. The unused sick days, at a cost of 2.6 MILLION dollars, will come out of this years present budget sick day reserve fund. The additional 1.2 MILLION, the incentive, will come out of next years budget, 2004-05, out of the reserves. By offering the incentive the people retiring will retire at a much higher salary to base their retirement on, which WE pay for, along with their health insurance. I think they pay about 15% of their health insurance costs.

There will be a savings to the district in salaries for new employees of over 1 million dollars, but that savings wont be felt for a few years, due to the incentive costs. There is a community forum meeting on Wednesday, June 9th at 7:30pm at the Middle School and the community has the opportunity to ask the Board questions about anything they like.

If you are interested in knowing what is happening in our school district to please come to the regular Business Meetings, where only agenda items may be discussed or the Community Forum Meetings where people may speak about any issue.

Now the taxpayers are going to pay teachers a bonus to retire even though they would have retired anyway? Can this district think of any more ways to waste the taxpayers money? OH! silly me, that's right, we're going to have astro turf fields now too. What a bunch of jackasses running Lindy schools. But then again, us taxpayers are the real schmucks for putting up with it.

Want more teachers to retire? Put them to work a little longer in the classrooms-they'll leave in droves.

Now wouldn't that be a wonderful idea. Unfortunately, the number of hours worked are governed by their contract. It also should be known that the sitting Board will be the people who negotiates the next teacher's contract, with the possible exception of three sitting Board members who have to run for re-election next year, those three being Bobby Brandenberger, Eddie Murphy and Bobby Spiro. Two of those three should go... one is responsible for the AstroTurf and another has been absent frequently.

It is time for the residents of Lindy to stop complaining, get to board meetings and demand accountability. Heaven help us if the present board vice president become president July 1st. He is a retired Lindy teacher and his wife is a teacher in the Lindy Middle School. Wonder where his priorities are?

I don't fully understand this package?
was it approved and did any teachers actually take this deal? will this cost us taxpayers more or less down the road?
Is it a good idea or not?

please be more specific

I am not currently on the Board, and haven't seen much of whats being said about the district on these gossip Boards for a long while, I can provide a bit of prospective and insight.

The retirement incentive approved by the Board of Education was a good thing for the District in the long run. Lindenhurst is saddled with a nasty sick day clause approved by the school board in the early 1980s. This inhouse retirement plan will result in a net savings of 200,000 the first year, and over 2,000,000 the second year.

While it sounds expensive, it also serves to retire some of that insane sick day clause debt. So its basically a neutral savings the first year....200,000 is not much in an over a 100 million dollar budget. But year two, you see significant savings.

While the Board may do some things wrong, this was not one of them.

There are many people who have worked for over thirty and in fact close to 40 years for the school. Their salary does not increase that much each year. However, they have not maxxed out the percentage by which their retirement is calculated. When they retire at a lower rate, the district saves money. If you have a teacher who is being paid on a PH. D. Scale retires and a new teacher is hired the net savings is in excess of $60,000. Therefore, if 30 teachers retire ... and some would be just as happy working, and retiring at a higher rate in the future, the school district saves money. They can replace that teacher, pay an incentive and still put money in the bank. It happens to be a financially sound move. It is your school district being financially responsible. Those who disagree are not understanding the economics involved. You should call and thank your superintendent (who is well known for being a penny pincher) and the school board for doing a financially responsible job.

word over the weekend is very few teachers are taking the retiremnet incentive?
Apparently 40k is not enough to attract big salaried teachers in lindy school district...
Has anyone heard the latest

Lindyworker
06-24-2004, 12:04 AM
The reason why 30 people have not signed up to retire: Some people like myself have been eligible to retire for several years but have a child in college and cannot afford the luxury of retirement. There are teachers who are eligible by age but ineligible due to not enough years, and would get hit with a penalty. This penalty would not by off set by the $40,000. The grass looks greener on the other side. However, those who oppose this incentive demonstrate a lack of knowledge in economics... Don't criticize the teachers until you have walked a mile in their shoes. Class size is up. Students are not more charming or cooperative. Parents who created some of these children are equally uncooperative. However, take a look at the regents results in the high school. Realize that EVERYONE must take the New York State Regents Exam in order to graduate. Some are eligible for the Regents Competency Test. That exam is not easier. It simply offers an alternate route to graduate. Take a look at the graduation results as well as drop out rate. Compare those statistics with other districts. Then realize the quality of the educational system in Lindenhurst.

In light of the Roslyn, and now William Floyd scandals, I think each and every district should be forced to conduct a complete audit, including who contracts are given out to and their ties to school administrators and board officials. Please take note how both the Roslyn and the William Floyd school distict superintendants both tried to thwart the investigation into their districts finances. At this point in time, any school district superintendant or school board member who tries to avoid an audit is a suspect, and should be looked at with a microscope. These are the people who are covering up and trying to hide criminality because they are profiting from it themselves. Wake up people, this is the tip of the iceberg. Wonder if the wonderful school board is going to re-hire the auditors that failed to uncover a mess in Roslyn, they have to vote soon on renewing their contract. Is someone getting greased or does this bunch just like the cursory review the district records receive? Consider this, a community audit, bring in the heads of the Chamber of Commerce, the civic associations, the village and town officials, and the community at large, to audit and review these same records - maybe more eyes will reveal the hocus pocus that the Administration may be covering.

All I know is that we are consistantly handing out money towards something whether it be trips, book club, supplies, snack, parties.... not to mention all the PTA fundraisers, what ever happened to paying your taxes and your kids needs are taken care of?? And with the amount of taxes we pay the PTA should be ashamed of themselves with the prices they charge our kids for items sold at these gift sales and plant sales. Then the budget gets passed and so how do we benefit?? We don't!

I can't say that anyone profits from the astroturf, or the lighted field, except that it is what was wanted by the sports community of the school district. Why.... I guess because it is nice, they can now play about 2 night football games and not everyone has it. Supposedly they say it is safer, but you can't prove that by my. What happens when the "turf" needs to be repaired, or it buckles, as I have been told it does? Ms Info... to add to your fact.. see if Finance Manager is the software used in the business office at Lindenhurst. Andy Miller from Miller Lilly is also the president of Finance Manager.. the software that is also in Roslyn, William Floyd, and many other school districts on Long Island. (they have software and do the audits..) Check it out.. Can you say CONFLICT OF INTEREST????

ExBoard Member

Finance Manager is the software used in the business office at Lindenhurst. It is my understanding though, that Andy Miller from Miller Lilly is no longer the president of Finance Manager. I must say the Lindenhurst School Board did the correct thing in not extending renewing Miller, Lilly's contact for the 2004-2005 year. They will be doing this years (2003-04) audit, but I am sure that they will be extremely diligent.

Lindenhurst should be in good condition though. Four years ago the district underwent a random audit by the State Comptrollers Office. These people spent about 3-4 months going over all of the books. This is the same audit that the Comptrollers Office announced yesterday that they will be conducting in all school districts over the course of the next 5 years. The two district's in trouble are presently being audited, and audits will be started in ten other districts on August 1st. The districts will not be notified before hand that the Comptrollers Office is coming in to do the audits.

ExBoardMember - you are correct that Andy Miller is no longer the president of Finance Manager, however he only recently resigned due to the scandal at Roslyn. Why??? What about all of the years that he was president? Wouldn't that be considered a conflict of interest with his audits?

You state that Miller Lilly will be diligent for the 03-04 year, but how many years have they been the external auditors for Lindenhurst? And were they diligent those years? It is not the current year that concerns me, it is the past X number of years! Hopefully things are ok at Lindenhurst but apparently if someone wants to steal from a school district than it is easy to do under the watchful eyes of Miller Lilly and Pearce (and their software company)!

Outsider - With the comprehensive audit that was done by the State Comptrollers Office 4 years ago, and with the current Assistant Superintendent for Business, I don't think that Lindenhurst has anything to worry about. I have seen Business Office people come and go, and in my opinion the one we have now is about the best we have ever had. He started right after the audit by the state.

Could it be construed as a conflict of interest, anything is possible. The program the district had prior to it, however, was horrible and needed to be replaced. The district was not pressured or forced into purchasing it, it was a recommendation from the Business Office.

I also believe that Lindenhurst is okay, and hopefully the new auditors that are hired, will look over the past several years to make everyone in the community comfortable. That would be my suggestion if I were still on the Board.

Ms Info

So it seems that the books in Lindenhurst have been cooked, or at least simmered. The audit is not going well, and it might be time to call in the state for an updated real audit. Board presidents signed off on shady expenses, given the state of the leadership in the past years is anyone surprised, hmmmm. Board members and presidents receive full benefits from school district, thats illegal.

That is a good name for you. The information you are posting is inaccurate and untrue. Not that I am a supporter of the present BOE officers, however an untruth is an untruth.

As far as your statement..

Board members and presidents receive full benefits
from school district, thats illegal

A member of the BOE has the ability to opt into the medical plan that is provided to all employees of the district BUT that BOE member must pay 100% of the cost of the plan. They do not get the coverage for free. Yes, the BOE president does take advantage of that option, but he does pay for it.

The only thing that a BOE member in Lindenhurst gets for free is the use of a filing cabinet, which that member is expected to return to the district when they are no longer serving as a BOE member.

Please, make sure that you have your facts straight before this turns into a bashing board.

Has a forensic accountant been called in to wade through the tons of paper necessary to find the ten years of misappropriation of funds? Has the car been returned, what about the computer equipment that several board members received (that turn up on surplus antique equipment lists a year later), the free software, have the cash gifts to Board members from the Building named after her Superintendent been accounted for???

Now lets get started on the favors - who's kid bumped a more qualified kid from a team, who's kid got home based tutoring from a $40 and hour teacher (paid for by taxpayers), who's kid graduated even though they should never have even passed the seventh grade, who's kid gets scholarships and awards by making promises to coaches? Again you are confused. The only person who can recommend the firing of personnel is the superintendent, unless he is the one being fired. And in any event, you need 5 of the 9 members to agree.

It appears by your comment, Quote:expert that maybe this time when you get upset and throw a fit you cant fire me, that you are a disgruntled employee. Any person has the right to apply for a position in the district. IF they are hired depends on the person who is the direct supervisor of that area, and then again it must come as a recommendation from the supervisor and superintendent and must be approved by a majority of the board (5 of 9) and the relative is not supposed to vote. You still are not giving out full information on topics.

I guess that the file cabinet that is given to each board member to use was a very lucrative one... maybe I didn't see the contents that was going to benefit me in it.

People don't speak out at meetings because of fear that their children would be scrutinized for it in some way. Most people, who are not naive, know when something stinks. It's obvious. You can see the difference in how easy the people on the boards can live. Even the individual school PTA boards benefit. They practically have run of the school. The teachers give them special favors. Some of these people get on the board just to be with their friends, their buddies, yes their cliques. Many of the women still have the instincts of Junior High Girls when it comes to letting others come and help or be a part of anything. They even put their 2 cents in when Village votes come, because alot of them just seem to know everyone and anyone they "know" will benefit them in any type of office.
Who gets hurt by this? All of our children. The people who sit back and just want good programs and good teaching, but never get to put a word in edgewise that isn't knocked down by a board member or brown noser. Yes, brown noser. They find that if they brown nose Presidents, VP's, board trustees, Principals, our teachers they get great benefits. In many cases just that their child can get away with being a bully or a trouble maker. In others that they just get to go to all the school functions, which by the way many parents never even know are happening, until their children mention them. Like Memorial Day events...
I would love to see parents invited to the schools to see more then art exhibits in Spring and meet the teachers in the Fall. What ever happened to school plays. No auditorium? So what. 1 grade at a time will be fine in the gyms, it's fine for every sale or whatever else they find they want to hold. Principals or teachers don't want to be bothered by these things, so the brown nosers don't push it.
We pay taxes and pay for everything but the school books.
Not all parents can be on the board or help out all the time. But most of us try to do as much as we can. Some help with sports, some with small events in the school if they can some with scouts, and so many other things. It's a shame that none of it matters enough, unless you are "friends" with the right people.
Of course this would be denied, who would admit it? In all honesty, I wouldn't. Not if my children were benefitting from it, not if I was a bigshot in the community.
Only our children lose. Theirs for not being punished when they should or kept back if they need to be. These sometimes grow up to be our community bullies, derelicts, drug dealers, theives and rapists. Just like in Bellmore where boys got away with sodomizing, just because they were on the football team, for years. Until somebody finally was brave enough to speak up and fight. And all of our children for not getting the things that they should be, because some, not all people the PTA and Board are in it for themselves, not the schools. Unfortunate circumstances. It's sad. :">

First of all to that last comment from friend. Those of us who truly believe in God do not have to push it on those who do not. God will always be in our hearts even when we are in school. The USA is about freedom and part of it is freedom of religion. So everyone who needs to worship their Gods in school have the choice of going to religious schools or going to public school and Church on Sundays, Temple or whatever else they may call their place of worship. Keep God in your heart.

2nd. here is a sample of a site from a nearby school district. It's smaller then ours and it's taxes are much, much less. Look at all they offer. and look at their beautiful website. There are many more websites like this online. Lindenhurst did a new Website. Not very good, actually the old one was better. And why don't all our kids have computer classes. Oh, instead of all this great stuff and great classes and nice school trips, we get Astroturf. Now, what is wrong there?!!!!
See and thing - does Mr. L ever look on these sites or is he too busy looking for ways to raise our taxes?

Positive change needs to come as well.

From what I hear it's the Super who needs to take a hike and
we need a board with the guts to dump him.
3 incumbents are up for reelection...
Not a one of those three have made even a dent, let alone an impact on the decisions in this district and yet, do to lack of interest and guts in the community they will probably all run unopposed and win another three years on the board.

I know of someone who might run. She served 9 years on the School Board till she was ousted by the current "sports board'. However, she would need to know she had the support of the community.

Her votes were not always popular with the unions (voted once against the LASA contract, held out trying to give the Custodians and Clericals more) and even some community residents, but she always voted her conscience and what she felt was in the best interest of the students and community.

Too bad there's not a way the ENTIRE board could be wiped clean and the upper administration with it.

I don't think I even know who you all are, but let's try to find at least one person who is there who should stay. These guys on the board are granted huge powers, and huge sums of money, by the state. It always seemed a bit insane to me that the schools can screw around with your kids and your money more than anyone - the two things I would probably get violent over, yet these guys are the lowest form of local politician. Most don't give a crap about anything other than what's in it for them. Well I guess you get what you pay for.

But turn out all of them at once, bad management decision. Find someone who walked away, or served on the Board and left after some political crap - tap them to run. Fewer agendas, and you get some experience. And how about someone with a brass pair ready to insult the teachers, the superintendent, the parents, the athletic people, and anyone who refuses to do right for the kids and the village. Lots of secrets in the closets of the guys who run these hundred million dollar experiements in public education, I want someone who knows which doors to open.

I was just being facetious. Obviously not all of the board members can be flushed at once, that's why the system is set up as it is, so that (in theory anyway) there are some members who know what they are doing and can help the newbies out if and when they beat out the incumbents for a seat.

We do need some new blood on the board though and again I say, why on earth look back?!

The previous board started this whole rotten landslide that has just about buried the taxpayers in Lindenhurst... why go back and cull from the boneyard? Those people were voted out because they were inneffectual and way past their prime (like several others who will hopefully be ousted over the next few years, one can only hope!)

The answer is to look forward to some positive change. We have a couple of fairly new members who seem to really care. I hope to see some positive action from them this year, as well as some fresh new faces on the board.

Why were those real estate agents meeting with the superintendent and board members at Niagara yesterday? Is something in the works that the school board is keeping from us? Maybe they'll let us know at the BOE meeting tonight, but don't get your hopes up!

Who knows what kind of things this BOE is up to. Did they tell the community about wanting to move graduation to Hofstra? No they didn't untill they got caught!

To many things happening behind closed doors.

Nice job Lederer kowtowing to one disgruntled gymnastics parent and selling the districts morale and your soul at the same time.
