Voters Turning Down Budgets In Record Numbers

Price of just living on Long Island is getting that much costlier. Voters have decided in some school districts that double digit budget increases won't wash with them.

Voters gave the School Board and the Administration a resounding no today on their budget. It should be interesting to see if the rework this budget or try what they did 2 years ago. Just turned around and handed us the same budget. I do not think they should try that tactic again. Of course these are the same people who are going to turn around in October and ask us for a $50 million dollar Bond Issue. It is almost laughable how much they think we can keep paying.

During Reagan's first term was the "record numbers" of LI school budgets defeated - this time, a tad more than a third (46 out of 126) went down to defeat.

In Nassau COunty, interestingly, the "guilt factor" played its card, because those school districts who voted in small percentage increases are the same ones that were chronically under-assessed all those 60 years of stagnation (Port Washington, for example, where their school budget total passed the "100 million mark" in proposals, only to be scaled back just before the vote).

But of course the "re-vote" will be the contentious-est... when's yours?

I have no idea when ours is in Farmingdale. I think they have a month to rework it?? Does that sound right? They have already had two meetings with the teachers, yesterday and today, and the teachers have already passed on all the cuts to the children if we are on a contingency budget. Oh yes, LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!!

wow..fuel goes up 100%..you have no control over that, so let's attack the schools. The schools pay utilities, insurance etc just like we do. If their costs went up only 8-12% while state aid went DOWN AGAIN, well can you do the math. If you all yelled as loud about texaco and mobil's profits gas would be 1.25 not 2.25 going to 3.
