A real shame that Longwood voters do not have a choice due to the uncontested board of education election. Why are people hesitant to run for this board?

There are many good YOUNG teachers out there. Teachers who want to teach, not just collect a paycheck. But as it is in this world, it's who you know, not what you know. Many qualified teachers are passed over because someone knows someone, and they get the job. There should be more time put into selecting the teachers. Our children will surly benefit!! Think how hard some of these people work to graduate. They go on and get their masters. only to find out they probably won't get hired because you need to be paid more. We'll eventually pay the price. Our children will, that is.

Maybe its because the current board is doing the job.
Something must be right we passed the last two budgets in a time when they were failing all over. Longwood is leading the fight in Albany to get the state to play ball with school districts. Members of the legislative committee regularly go to Albany to lobby for more funding and last year went to Washington DC for a day trip to meet with our representatives.
Candee Swenson was voted the Superintendant of the year for New York Sate, had 4 board members and administrative people at the recent forum with Rep Bishop and McCarthy.
The newly elected member of the board is very involved in committees and is very committed to the issues.
A new president will be elected as the last President chose not to run this year.
I would rather no candidates run for the school board, rather than people who do not know what is going on behind the scenes and make false statements about people like what happens in other school districts.
Give the Longwood board, the credit they deserve.

You are right on the money, time for a change!
The fact is, age discrimination 'AGEISM' is the buzz word right now, besides hiring nepote's and crony's! You are right on target when you say "these people must have worked very hard to get their certificates and masters degrees"!

After all the problems of corruption, Longwood continues same old. The Board of Education appointed a central office employee as Treasurer! The conflicts of interest continue. Where is the accountability?

Longwood is searching for a new Superintendent. Get involved -- volunteer to participate on Superintendent citizen committee. Strong finance for next superintendent a must!

Knolls, in an earlier post you stated something about no one runs for the board.
Funny, recently a board member moved out of state, creating an opening. It was well advertised and 19 Longwood residents were interviewed for the vacancy.
All sent in letter of interest and were interviewed based on that. Were you one of them? I doubt it.
Apparently the new member will be sworn in Oct 7th.
Hats off to those who cared and interviewed for the opening, more that can be said for those who spew jibberish on a computer. Before you say it, Yes I was one of those 19 interviewees.

Smart move by Longwood to close today. Roads are treacherous, Longwood Hill is a super slide, and the two major schools are very hazardous to approach. I would rather our kids have a few days added on during Easter and Summer, then risk a disaster waiting to happen on icy snow covered streets.
Oh wait, do we still call it Easter?
In Longwoods defense..There was a Santa Claus play this year and the calender mentions Christmas Day

Before you start talking taxes, why don't you really study the report that Newsday presented, and not throw Longwood in competition with every other school. Newsdays ranking were a joke and just showed numbers, if you think about.
Why not disect the rankings and then compare Longwood with similar student population, similar demographics, and community needs. When you do that, Longwood did not fare that bad at all. You cannot compare us with Ward Melville, SWR or others that do not have the diversity Longwood has.
Higher taxes? you maybe be pleasantly surprised when the new budget proposal is announced.
By the way, this week the Superintendent presented the proposed budget to the Board and the Community in a public forum. Where were you? Attendance was embarrasing, I was among a handful of community members present and when it came for public opinion three people spoke, and NONE addressed the budget. They must be doing something right.
I guarantee Longwoods budget will be among the most favorable in Brookhaven town

Dear GovenorParaki,
I am writing in support of Comptroller Alan Hevesi’s request for $5.8 million to hire 89 additional auditors for school audits.
Governor Pataki’s decision to under fund this necessary safeguard for the 49 additional school districts that employed the same auditing firm as the Roslyn School District leaves these districts open to wide spread financial fraud and corruption. In addition, all districts in New York State are vulnerable to the same mismanagement of school budgets. Without proper funding and oversight, no school system can feel secure that their money is being spent appropriately.
Many New York State students are already faced with poorly run and under funded schools. An independent auditing process with state oversight is vital to ensure that all monies are being spent on educating our children.
I am opposed to Governor Pataki’s $2.9 million dollar cut, and urge you work to re-instate the total amount requested by Comptroller Alan Hevesi so he has the proper funding to hire additional auditors in the wake of the corruption scandal that has tainted the Roslyn school district.
Very Truly Yours,
School District Tax payer

Please cut and paste to email or letter. This is a plea for Governor Pataki to include the 45.8 million needed for the Scool District audits through out Nassau and Sulfork School Districts.. Don't end up in a scandal catch it before it gets worse. If we join forces we can win.

THANKS TO ALL THAT SUPPORTED OUR BUDGET THIS YEAR....THE KIDS IN THIS DISTRICT APPRECIATE YOUR SUPPORT.

I attended Longwood's legislative district on Saturday.
May I just say with all due respect....that Ron Manning is a giant pushover. He placates and played to every side all in one sitting. He ought to "grow some" and be the true representative of the people he was elected to be. Stop pandering to the do nothing say everything politicians and be a fighter for more funding, and better represenation in the legislatures, and the chambers of Albany.

Why lash out at Manning, he gave you all the opportunity to state your cases, you should be railing against Ginny Fields who left her brains home, Fitzpatrick who endorses your taxpayer money to pay for illegal immigrant educations while they send BILLIONS to their home countries to forify their hometowns, and to Ken LaValle who suddenly remembered he had another commitment after he was shot down several times.
Oh yeah and Trunzo who lesgislates from a nursing home while his aide makes ALL his appearences.
Maybe you shoul re-listen to Mannings final comments and heed them, and your school board wouldnt have all the troubles it probably has.
I give credit to Fred Thiele who like he said was the first there and the last to leave, at least he LISTENED to everyone.
um excuse me guest 8:08 a.m. but "my school board" is LONGWOOD. I am a resident of the Longwood School District. I never said that my school board had problems. I felt he should've gone after the politicos harder instead of talking about how we have to respect them and they're here out of the goodness of their heart blah blah blah. They came because they had to and they brought very little with them - in your own words including their brains.

I apologize I figured you were from one of the other districts. I feel Manning was as tactful as he could be. Board members dont want to bite the hands that supposedly feeds them.
Longwood hosted the breakfast, the hosts shouldnt piss the guests off. Pam Bethial and and the guy from Sachem did a pretty good job of relaying what everyone was thinking. I just thought it was funny how one by one, they suddenly had to leave. Marc Alessi did have a sick child at home, but the others, especially Ken LaValle were laughable at their sudden exit left.
Ken LaValle is very arrogant and judging by his lack of knowledge on what is going on around him very ignorant as well.

any budget numbers yet? Tomasjeski, Silvistri, Davis and Miller are all up for re-election, who should stay, who should go?

The voters spoke and dealt the right hand. Davis got booted and Manella voted in. Manella went after Davis and had him scrambling from day 1. its about time we have experienced professionals in the Board of Education. Davis was like a deer in headlights and had to be taken down.
Now everyone will benefit and see how a district should be run.
You Mr Davis were the weakest link..be gone and stay away please!!
