Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy is extending the probationary period of the latest class of new police officers by discounting any time they have taken off in the last 18 months.
The new officers' probationary period was supposed to end June 26, but in most cases will be extended by four to six weeks, said the county executive. He declined to detail his reasons for his latest move.
But his action comes after the county legislature Tuesday tabled until Aug. 4 Levy''s bill seeking authority to impose police layoffs, cut $5.5 million in salary expenses, and eliminate more than 360 vacant and unfunded positions.
Noel DiGerolamo, Suffolk PBA vice president, called it "disgraceful" that Levy might try to "play games" with new officers' probationary period. "I'd hope that the county executive would not stoop to that level," he said.

How does he justify firing 7 officers? Is he never going to hire any again? Why not just hire 7 less the next academy class? Do not mess with these officers lives. While they have a great job they also gave up their old jobs and I am sure have famlies that rely on them for support. This move makes no sense at all other than to force the PBA to do what he wants.

He cant fire anyone if he applied for federal aid, which he did.

Yes, stand tall against the County Executive who seeks to oppress you in your quest for a second Jet ski and boob implants for your wife!!!
"Cowing before him." You guys are clowns. You've been raking it in and laughing behind everyone in Suffolk's backs for years. Now the stuff is hitting the fan. Tough luck. Maybe if you would make some real significant concessions and not run hit ads against Levy, he wouldn't have to use tactics like this.
I think it's "cowering" anyway.

For someone with such a mighty lexicon, you sure can't construct a logical argument.

a lot of people make a lot more money then cops on LI, myself included. You should have worked harder in school, then you wouldn't have to whine because..god forbid...someone makes more money then you.

Who is whining because someone makes more then me?
This was a discussion of possible illegal labor practices by levy and we have an insecure nitwit(you) hijacking the thread, and whining about who makes more then who....

I hope the public and the Legislature's see Steve Levy for what he is a angry little man that knows this is the dog days of his polictal career and will do anything to anybody that does not agree with him, he does not care about the county or anybody but humself you can see in his actions. If you take yourself out of the picture and was one of his advisors don't you think you would say, hey Steve what are you doing. His time is coming to a end and everything will finally come out about Steve (including advisors being locked up for polictal corruption and saying negative remarks about African Americans).Later Steve no one is going to miss you and don't worry they will never name any thing in Suffolk County after you (maybe a landfill)
