Talk about being paranoid. Isn't this the norm for every dictator or communist in history?
Flap over review of Suffolk lawmaker's newsletterBY REID J. EPSTEIN | reid.epstein@newsday.com

In a move that has legislators crying foul, an aide to Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy reviewed at least one legislator's newsletter before it was published and requested changes to the content.
The dispute began Friday when Levy aide Dan Aug phoned Legis. Cameron Alden's office to suggest changes to the Islip Republican's biannual newsletter. The newsletter, approved by the county's print shop June 1, has yet to be mailed. It will be ready for distribution Friday, Aug said.
Alden decried the call as a violation of the separation of powers. But the county attorney's office said there's no violation. Newsletters are printed by the county's print shop in Yaphank, part of the Department of Public Works, which Levy oversees.
"There's a $130-million hole in the budget, and he's got time and money to have somebody spy on us and on our newsletters," Alden said.
Things to do this weekend Aug declined to say how he acquired Alden's newsletter. He said Levy's office has not previously read newsletters before distribution.
The disputed article in Alden's newsletter warned residents that the county is not enforcing federal legislation governing the safety of public swimming pool filters. Aug said the county has alerted pool industry officials about the issue and said he called Alden "in a cooperative fashion to help prevent him from embarrassing himself."
County Attorney Christine Malafi said there is "nothing improper" about Levy's office reviewing legislative newsletters before distribution.
The dust-up is the second this year over legislative newsletters. In February, Levy took the unusual step of spending $13,540 to send newsletters to Presiding Officer William Lindsay's Holbrook district to rebut Lindsay's newsletter.
Aug said Levy would send his own newsletter to correct Alden's "if we have to." Alden called the threat "Nixonian."
Legislators in April voted to eliminate mailed newsletters for Levy and themselves for 18 months starting July 1.
Lindsay Wednesday sent a letter to Levy protesting the situation.
"He's overstepping his boundaries," Lindsay said.

SPYING. I HARDLY THINK SO. It is common practice for public officials that become aware of a story about to be published that has negative overtones to it to call the publisher of that journal and offer their own views, if not outright try to intimidate the publisher, including the newspapers.

Just one more idiot looking for another way to bang Lebie. The guy is certainly an azz, but every time some frustrated suffolk cop comes on here and blames him for something else more ridiculous than the last, it just makes you all look like idiots.

That might be the case with an independent magazine or newspaper story... but this was a ELECTED official's newsletter to the folks that elected him in his district that was being printed in the county print shop. Seems Stevie has eyes and ears everywhere! Who is he to get involved in what another ELECTED official says? How do you justify Stevie taking ANY action to interfere with this ELECTED official communicating with the voters? Do you think little Stevie would put up with this type of SPYING and INTERFERENCE?
Typical Levy... trying his best to bully and control information. His time is coming, people and other elected officials are getting to see his playbook.. he's not really much different than Castro or Chavez... create crisis.. bully the opposition, control information... and pull the wool over the eyes of the people... and in the end... leave a mess!

The fact the newsletter is printed in a county print shop does lend a whole new slant on this. I do have to figure if it is sent to the County shop one has to believe it is almost public information before it is printed.
This is NOT spying.

Does little Stevie have so much free time and underlings that are free to watch what other ELECTED officials are doing? Perhaps the legislature should get first read on all of Stevie's press releases and newsletters. It's all part of his game... the little gay bully will get his in the end.... people are staring to see the way he operates !
