i was there buffing the fire and the fire was well involved by the time they got there. i saw the second guessing on the wbfd post. i agree with one point there was no human lives involved to go in and risk lives.

I was also there. There was no entry that could be made without risking lives. The person posting on the WBFD thread tried to come off as a FDNY guy. Kudos to all that were there freezing their butts of and trying to do the best that they could.
It was a total shame what happened to the pets and I myself is a pet lover, BUT nobody should EVER feel guilty about not going in and risking their own lives. They did what they could do. Shame on anyone who would even think differently. God bless you for trying.

As I was their on the Night of the Fire. I can tell you right from the beginning that this building suddenly flashed over .And considering a prolonged interior attack was out of the question. I was the third Truck in at this BTJ Fire and the Carnage was already done, by the time we the Fire Department was notified to respond. The interior attack was aborted because there was no sign of life. Then the roof collapsed. The inside suppression team exited the Fire Building and attempted to gain entry from the exposure 2,3,4, side .exterior. But all of the exterior doors were blocked by pallets of stone. Preventing the Fire Department from gaining entry on these exposure sides of the building. A forklift had to be used.Against great odds this Fire Department operated at the scene, of this horrific Fire. The Fire/EMS Members are devastated by the loss of Wild Life/Pets at this location. Death came suddenly to the Pets at this location and this fact is very well known by the professionals working at the scene .Now let's look at the facts leading up to this Fire mind you this isn't a blame game. This is just one of many other Fires, which occurred at this same business location in the past few years. And keep in mine that 'No place is immune" when it comes to Fire..Our News people should do a follow up story concerning the Fire Code violations surrounding this an any other building location within our community. These Pets shouldn't die in vein.Because the next time we could be talking about human Life.Remember your local Fire Department doesn't have enforcement authority under code violations. This is the Town of Islip.Even if a summons is issued the violator can stroke the system until the infraction is corrected. Paying nothing as a result. Also as part of the delay at this BTJ's Fire the owner responding to the location blowing by the SCPD road block resulted in hitting/dragging a young Firefighter down the street. This young Firefighter was at the Fire hydrant hooking up providing water supply to the First responding engine. The owner broke one of the couplings to the water supply line resulting in a delay to water supply, to the pumper.Despite what people may think your Fire Departments are at great risk of serious injury or Death anytime they are called out to serve within your community.People have called up the Fire Department Heartbroken that the Firefighters didn't sacrifice their own lives to save the Pet's and have called the members of your Fire Department animal killers.Well if their was any sign of life inside of that structure when the first responding units arrived they would have rescued the pets. This building was a known hazard by many people, why did the public allow this site to exist. It is being called a Land Mark if a Fire fighter was to have died at this location would the public feel the same way.Or would they be blaming the Fire Department for doing something wrong resulting in the death of a Member. I wonder, I really wonder.....

Gadfly, i couldn't agree with you more, nothing but a unch of people on the outside looking in, monday morning quarterbacking....i was there, operating a deuce and a half in many locations throughout that fire. 1. if all of these so called petlovers, including the business owners themselves want to place blame somewhere, place it on the business owner, that place was a shithole with no sprinkler systems. 2. a valiant effort was made by all members operating at that scene to risk their lives to save precious little FuFu. (no, im not an animal hater) 3. people are acting as if this was a godforbid, nursery school that burned down. Let me ask you this, if 10 firefighters died in this fire, would any of the animal loving public, show up to our funerals, place flowers outside our place of perish, sob like a woman i saw sobbing last night holding onto the fence so she didnt fall down. as in the words of the great gadfly, i wonder, i really really wonder....

I heard County screwed up by not activating the alarm for WIFD initially. Story has it (from a WIFD FF), county called WIFD Dispatch, with further info for the alarm (like rep eta), and WIFD said what alarm. Only then did the alarm get activated.

News 12 called the Town of Islip Code enforcement to request a list of code violations at this location. News 12 was told that their wasn't any violations.....The prior Chief of WIFD Department and a former Arson Investigator submitted copies of Violation to SCPD Arson Sqd.......News 12 needs to look into this matter and turn this thing around for the Fire Department who responded. The community has attack the integrity of the West Islip Fire Department.Scores of Phone calls from the community calling the Department animal killers......

Well Obviously the Town of islip dropped the ball if the WIFD Chief reported the Viloations and notified SCPD Arson, why then is the community attacking the WIFD? Its up to to McGowan and the town to enforce the violations.

It's not the WIFD's fault that the animals died. I've read earlier posts and spoke to firemen and cops who were there. It was NOT worth the firefighters' lives to try and effect a rescue. It's sad that the animals died, but people have to keep things in perspective.

I was at that fire and we were 24'd in. You cannot tell me that anyone should have made entry into that building. The problem is that these people watch way too much TV and movies and believe that we are indestructable (Rescue Me, Backdraft, Ladder 49, and that other program). They see them on TV walking into a burning building with no SCBA because there is a light "haze". I can tell you that they don't understand the concept of ZERO visibility, choking smoke and unbearable heat. They think that our turnout gear keeps us nice and safe and that there is no chance that we will get hurt, scorched or for that matter dead in a couple of seconds. They forget that this pet store was a maze with cages, feed, chemicals and all sorts of traps just waiting for us. Or that the tin roof with the giant AC dropped in. It would have been okay in their eyes should one of us had gotten killed because we were trying to save fish. What they forget is that this was a "makeshift" building. Added on to for years and years with shoddy wiring and poor construction. And all this was excacerbated by a business owner who hurt 2 firefighters as well as ripping out the water supply. But lets blame the vollies cause we are cruel selfish beings who only get up in the middle to try our best to save your structures or take you to the hospital because you have gas and don't want to stink up your own car. It's amazing where some people have their priorities.

Of course, and as usual, the FF's get blamed for everything. West islip res wake up!! yes, BTJ's was a landmark but come on. It IS a shame that all those helpless animals died. However, You couldnt even WALK in that place without running into something. it was filled from floor to ceiling with pet supplies and other crap. If you were in the main aisle walking back to the fish tanks and another person was walking up the aisle , someone would have to step tp the side to let the other pass. THATS how cramped it was. And the fish tanks were a huge jumble of wires, and tanks, and heaters and everything else. It's sad, but let's hold the owner accountable as well. He LET the store grow and be a "death trap", with disregard to the saftey of the animals. I think the fire depts who were there did a great job. Be safe out there
