This evening, several speeding fire trucks from Centereach FD caused fear and consternation at the Smith Haven Mall. The scene was a floor show of red lighted trucks and blue lighted cars flying hither and yon with no apparent destination and no apparent reason for the apparent madness. One particular truck came to a screeching halt outside Ruby Tuesdays, a high-booted male jumped from the truck and ran into Ruby's, immediately ran back out and jumped back into the totally-redlighted-truck and went flying to another part of the Mall and .....PARKED!!! At the same time, several flying bluelighted cars sped from the mall parking lot to Moriches Road and.....PARKED!!! Civilians stood in awe and wonderment shaking their heads while children screamed and clung to their mothers. Calls to the management of the Mall revealed that the management was just as mystifiied as the rest of us. I suppose the whole display was a warm up for Christmas!

The Centereach Fire Department responded to the mall to investigate an activated automatic fire alarm system.
The units that left that location responded to Blydenburg road for a motor vehicle accident with a reported trapped person.
Seems to me they were doing their job, just 2 out of about 2,800 times this year the c.f.d. will be called to duty

If you have a complaint or concern about any vol. fire department, please feel free to contact their Chief of Department, their hq's phone number is in the white pages.
Being a Chief, I assure you they will give you an accurate answer and the facts, instead of bringing it here and starting another 10 pages of assumptions and fire service bashing.

THANKS TO THEM FOR DOING IT AGAIN, AND AGAIN , AND AGAIN. BEING A NEIGHBOR OF THE CFD I CAN TELL YOU FROM FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE THEY DO A GREAT JOB. DON'T JUST GUESS BECAUSE YOU DON'T SEE FLAMES BLOWING OUT WINDOWS THERE'S NOT A EMERGENCY THERE REQUIRING FD RESPONSE. PEOPLE NEED TO STOP COMPLAINING AND START SAYING THANK YOU. UNTILL YOUR ONE OF THE PEOPLE GETTING UP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT, GOING TO HELP PEOPLE AND RUNNING INTO SITUTATIONS, THAT EVERYBODY IS RUNNING OUT OF. Happy Thanksgiving to all speeding firemen whether they are blue-lighted or red-lighted. Just pray that someone isn't taken out by their Nascar antics and cowboy hi-jinks. Civilians are entitled to travel their tax-paid roads without fear of being pounded into the netherworld by some blue lighted demon on his way to nowhere. Chiefs should step up to the plate and rein in their adrenaline-charged vols. Who controls these guys anyway?

Ho Hum - have we heard this before on here? Broken record. Getting boring. They're our tax paid roads too. People seem to forget we pay taxes and give of our time. Move over and let us through. Not all of us are speed demons and you don't move for us either. Oh - and Happy Thanksgiving to you too. As if anything could make you happy.

Sometimes it takes "broken record" to get the chiefs involved and get them off their fat asses. These vols need supervision and any chief who disagrees is in denial and should resign. Any vol who breaks the speed limit should receive the appropriate punishment and have his blue light taken away forever. Period. Enough already!

Guess what you want chiefs to get up off there "fat asses" why dont you try this - get off your fat ass look in the phone book get the number for the department you want to call and call the chief and tell him. Don't come on a complaint board and try to lump a group of people together like you some kind of firefighter hating nazi. You talk about breaking the speed limit well God knows if YOU look down at YOUR speedometer you'll see your speeding alot to in your soccer mom wagon. Unless you some dried up old hag, which I suspect may also be true. Hell I'm at work and waiting to go home and had a minute to check out the site, but you your sitting at home on Thanksgiving writting how the big bad fireman is speeding. Get a life. Next time you see a speeding firefighter stop and think what he/she might be going to. I know if I hear a call with people trapped or a baby not breathing my foot gets alittle heavy. Wouldn't yours? Wouldn't you want to know that the first responders to your emergency are doing what they can as quickly as possible? Ass.

Seems the biggest complaint about vollie depts is the fact that there response time is slow because no one is "on duty". Now you people are complaining that they respond to quickly, make up your minds you cant have it both ways, or do you just like to bitch. Usually most fire fighters only respond faster to what appears to be a true emergency. Very few drive fast to a simple alarm, but as a non member all you can see is the bad. Try joining yourself and see how you respond, I hope its fast enough to save someones life or there property.

Hey guys, why so defensive? And you seem to be a bunch of woman-haters as well. There's no call for that kind of firehouse language on the boards. Are you all so thin-skinned that you can't take a bit of constructive criticism? Tax payers are concerned about the use and abuse of emergency lights on the vehicles of people who are too young and too immature to understand what they mean. It's time for the chiefs to hold classes on the proper procedures. Or is it possible that they chiefs don't know any better? Maybe it's time for a review board comprised of citizens who are responsible and have no connections to any department. This board would review all aspects of fire department life including the collection and use of money and the uses and abuse of alcohol at fd sponsored events.

If your house was on fire, or if you were involved in a major motor vehicle accident and needed extrication, I am sure that these "NASCAR cowboys" would not get there quick enough for you. It seems that when someone needs the FD they never get there fast enough, you hear it all the time " what took you guys so long to get here" when in reality the response time was normal 4 - 5 minutes.
But looking in on someone else's misfortune, It's like why are they going so fast.
Don't comment on something you don't know about. There are a lot of variables that come into account when the FD gets an alarm and are responding, none of which I will go into trying to explain to layman.
I am an ex Chief of a local FD and response procedures were a major topic of trainings and SOP's* (standard operating procedures) * for the layman.
The publics safety is our number one concern. thats why we are here in the first place. It's not a mens club or secret society which many of the un-informed may think. Firefighting and emergencies is serious business, and I am sure that 99% of Long Islands volunteers take it that way.
Get involved with your own local FD and see for your self. That is if you can give up precious time away from your family the way the volunteers do on a daily basis 24/7/365 Edited by: FDNYVET at: 11/25/04 11:32 pm

First of all not a woman hater I just don't like people who sit there and complain because they have nothing better to do (you). Secondly - what happened to my suggestion to call a chief? Third - too young and immature to understand what it means - well do you understand its a courtesy light and you should show some courtesy and move. There to young to have a blue light but there good to go and help you with an emergency. As far as a civilian review board I think that would be a great idea - to look at what commissioners are doing. If you want to talk mis appropriation of funds the firefighters are not the place to look. Hell, at my fire house we pay our own bills and when a neighbor complained that we were washing our cars with her tax money we took out the bill and showed her whose money payed what. Firefighters have almost zero control over what fire commissioners do, what trips they take (strange, conventions are always in the warmest places), how much the spend on food on the trips $100 a day for a person for food seems excessive. Your barking up the wrong tree jean, I mean lady.

A review board? To oversee all aspects of the Department? Over a blue light? How about educating the public? For all other aspects? I don't think so. That's the Chief's job. Citizens to oversee taxpayer spending? In most places that's called a Commissioner. Want to oversee? Run. Or just get involved. You as a taxpayer have that right. If you are even a taxpayer. Sorry you happen to be female. Everyone who responds against one on here is labeled a female hater, usually by another female. Have you seen some of the responses to the males? No different. That criticism wasn't constructive, it was vindictive. Constructive doesn't seem to last on these boards.

Think about what you are saying. You have to be 18 to join the fire department. You also have to be 18 to join the military. If the United States Government feels that an 18 year old is mature enough to carry a gun and fight and kill for our country, then what makes you think that the same 18 year old isn't mature enough to drive a car with a blue light? Oh by the way: I can't believe you figured all of us out! You got it right on the money, we're all drunk alcoholics and we need to be supervised. We need rehab because all we do is drink every day, every hour and every minute. I bathe in beer, I drink beer, I eat beer, I brew my coffee with beer, I wash my face with beer, my pool is filled with beer, I actually have a I.V. beer set, so I don't ever miss a drop. Thanks for the concern. You know of any good counselers for this terrible problem

civilian review board??? Did you know that all board meetings are open to the public???? Instead of BASHING on this thread - take some time out of your precious schedule and go to just one meeting. call your local fire dept. to find out when these meetings take place.IF YOU DARE TO GET INVOLVED
