Longwood School District Board of Education has approved a 10% Tax reduction for all Volunteers firefighters and Rescue in Longwood School District for the 2005-2006 school year at an average savings of $500 per year on school taxes. This covers Coram, Gordon Heights, Middle Island, Ridge and Yaphank FDs.
has your school district approved this? If not go to the Board meetings and request it.

Whoa...hold on there Taxman, it's not that simple. The Chief of your department must submit an eligibility list to the Town Assessor's office, which certifies the members that are property owners in the district. Then, each taxing authority, i.e. the Town, the Library, the Street Lighting, the Village, etc...must EACH offer up a public referendum that authorizes the deduction to be made. Only then will the reduction take effect. Oh, and by the way, there is no guarantee that they will do it. And finally, the Board has no oversight on this, it comes from the Chiefs.
Just thought I'd add some fact to the story.

If you already applied for the Brookhaven and Suffolk Co. reduction you do not need to reapply for the longwood Sd reduction.

Talk about facts, the Longwood School Board approved it at a public meeting, so I would then gues they are doing or it or they wouldn't have have voted and issued a press release on it.
Yes the Chief has to supply the info, but if he did so already when brookhaven Town and Suffolk county approved it, he doesnt hacve to re-submit it, unless he has add ons.
The Board of education will most likely only do it if they are approached from said fire District.
I know for a fact, that the Longwood board was approached by representatives of the involved Fire departments at least on three public occassions, most recently at a metting last month.
So, please do not make it sound like i am blowing smoke and not knowing what i am talking about, because i know a little more about the process then you, and have been part of it.

Ahh, the intelligence we find on here. I believe Longwood is in the same state. You remember the state? They passed the law. West End, East End, doesn't matter, the Chief still must submit an annual list, schmuck.

First of all I didn't start the name calling. It's not my style on here if you look around. Second of all this thread was not about Middle Island or m.i. as it was called. Taxman stated that Longwood's "School Board" had passed the 10% Tax Reduction as allowed by the modified State Law. He asked "has your school district approved this? If not go to the Board meetings and request it." I would assume he was addressing others in the County, as the State passed the law for Suffolk County. Theres no need for name calling and I apologize for getting involved with it. I will leave you to your discussion. Have a good weekend.

My whole goal was to inform that in fact Longwood School Board was good enough to approve the tax abatement for the FD's within the Longwood School District (MI,Ridge,GH,Yaphank and Ridge) My other intention was for those fire departments that don't have it, should approach their School Districts in a respectable way and request they consider it.
I'm sorry that a simple positive post has turned into such a free for all, and like west ender this is my final post on the matter.

The volunteer fire service, already a deceptively expensive proposition, gets more expensive by the moment. All of the tax dollars, donations, and other costs associated with it are being further supplemented with tax breaks, reduced tuition programs and mortgage subsidies. The kicker is, it's all for naught. These feeble attempts to shore up the volunteer system are a waste of time and money. Recruitment and retention are still abysmal. Paid, or at least part paid is inevitable. Lets embrace this reality and get on with implementing it already. Listen, it's nice that people want to volunteer. Let those who are so inclined clean a park or coach a kids sports team. The business of providing for the public's safety can no longer be entrusted to a system that is founded on the premise that maybe someone's coming to help, and maybe no one is. Maybe they'll have a clue, and maybe they wont. Maybe they'll get there in time to save your house, and maybe they wont. This is no way to run a public safety organization when a feasible, affordable alternative exists. Enough pandering to the hobbyists that make up the fire service on the Island! It's time to get serious and stop playing politics with the public's safety. Let's go paid already.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hauppauge, NY - Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy filed legislation this week that would allow Suffolk County firefighters and EMS volunteers who own cooperative apartments to take advantage of state legislation offering property tax exemptions to volunteers who own homes.

Governor Pataki last year signed legislation originated by Levy when he served as a state assemblyman that gave volunteer firefighters and EMS volunteers a 10% exemption on their property tax bills. However, state legislators determined that there was question about whether volunteers who owned cooperative apartments would qualify for the exemption. The State Legislature enacted clarifying legislation recently to make it clear that cooperative apartment owners do qualify, and Levy's new bill will allow Suffolk's volunteers to receive the maximum benefit permissible.

"I was delighted to be able to help our volunteer firefighters and EMS volunteers get a break on their property taxes as an assemblyman, and I am equally pleased, as county executive, to help every eligible volunteer, whether they live in a house or a co-op, to get the maximum benefit they are allowed to receive by law," Levy said. "They provide critically important services for all county residents and it's the least we can do."

To help these volunteers secure their benefits.

It's part of the town or village taxes dumbo, so if the town or village grant the deduction the fire tax is discounted too.
