View Full Version : SC Medal Day with the Politicians Absent
Twisted

Today was the Suffolk County Medal of Valor Day, which was hosted by the Mastic FD. In total there was 22 Brothers that were awarded a Medal of Valor for putting their own wellbeing on the line and going beyond the normal line of duty as volunteers. As I stood in the back of the room listening to the opening services and the introduction of invited guests and dignitary?s, it was notably obvious the lack of politicians present. While looking at the program guide it showed them all as being invited.
Scorecard is as follows:
County Executive
Steve Levy ?????..No Show
(so called friend of the Fire Service)
New York State Senators
Kenneth LaValle????????.No Show
John Flanagan?????????.No Show
Cesar Trunzo.????...Sent a Representative
Owen Johnson?????????.No Show

Suffolk County Legislators
Vivian Viloria-Fisher????????No Show

Lynne Norwick?????????.?.No Show
Allan Binder???????????...No Show
Paul Toner????????????. No Show

John LaValle???????????..No Show
With 10 Brookhaven Township Medal recipients
Pete McGowan??????Sent a Representative
With 7 Islip Township Medal recipients
Patrick Vecchio??????????..No Show
With 2 Smithtown Township Medal recipients
I guess that goes to show us how much the politicians really care, that they couldn?t take any time out of their schedules to honor those people you put theirs lives on the line every in this County for nothing. In fact it wasn?t even that much time, the whole ceremony lasted 45 minutes. They all should be ashamed of themselves and we should not forget them when their election time comes around.

Maybe someone forgot to invite them? It would be highly unlikely that if you had invited all those politicians you mentioned that only two sent reps to the function. Go back and check your sources, someone screwed up here!

This is not the first year that this has happened, it's every year! Its become very obvious the politicians could care less about showing up and its not just this event!

This post was not directed at Steve Levy but at all the politicians both Democrats and Republican?s who didn't bother to show up and recognize the life saving efforts of those who received the Medal of Valor.
But being you brought it up, you must know that he is a Media Monger. In fact he missed a whole bunch of Photo Ops, by being a "No Show", guess he doesn't like photos any more, he must be strictly a network camera man now!

It is true that politicians are known for kissing babies and shaking hands, but regardless, they should have been present for this. These Brothers and Sisters risk their lives, not for a medal but because we choose to. The medal is a nice thank you from people whom we look to for guidance and training. These men and women who received theses awards would have done the same whether they got this medal or not. In the fire service all of us are courageous and brave at some time. It is nice to recognize their heroism through these ceremonies. Congratulations to all who received their due praise and shame on the politicians for not recognizing them. Honestly, I would rather they didn't show anyway. They would only be there under false pretenses. Not because they care, only to get a picture. I for one am glad that we all realize how important the fire service really is to the politicians, Not at all. I guarantee you they will be at all of our dinners, thats for sure. So just remember that. Don't let it ruin your day brothers, good work. Stay safe and keep up the good work.

Just for the record, during the medal ceremony there was another fire department activity underway. Lakeland Fire Department held a parade and street renaming that morning in honor of Ex-Chief John Napolitano and the following politicians were there.
County Executive Steve Levy
NY State Assemblywoman Ginny Fields
Congressman Tim Bishop
County Legislators Bill Lindsey and Cameron Alden
and the Islandia Mayor and Deputy (names unknown)
A section of Motor Parkway was renamed and Lakeland was joined by Ronkonkoma, Hauppauge, C.I., Bohemia, Holbrook, Smithtown, Nesconset and others to honor Johnny Nap.
I'm not a politician lover but I give credit where it's due.

Just a few facts about Sunday's Medal Day Ceremony and I’m not looking to do battle with anybody just add a few points – that’s all!
First of all, my congratulations to all the Medal of Valor recipients, for a job well done. Second, thank you to the 200 plus people that took the time out on Sunday to attend.
Third, Mastic did a great job of hosting and should receive our thanks also.
I think there were many people who noticed the absence of our political leaders on that day, but it looks like Twisted is the only one with enough time on his hands to express it in writing. Whoever you are; you almost have a better pipeline to information then I do!
I did however find out from the individuals that do the invites that all the people listed above where sent more then one letter requesting their attendance. In defense of the politicians - which is tough for me to do, there was also ones that took the effort to at least send Proclamations for each recipient if they couldn’t attend; which included Mr. Levy and Mr. LaValle (Just not sure which one).
Our Political leaders look to us when it time to get elected and we to them when we want some type of legislation passed. There is no doubt that it has to be a 2 way street, and work hand in hand with our political leaders to continue moving on in the future. However, there has to have a little respect for those who do it day in and day out for free and especially those who risk it all for the taxpayers of this County!

I'm a 30 year FD and EMS member. I also worked for a NYS Assemblywoman and served as her advisor on FD and EMS issues.
I attended both award ceremonys and installation dinners as part of my job and presented proclamations or spoke on behalf of her.
If the invitation was extended, at the bare minimum a representive should have been sent as a sign of respect.
The only thing I waould ask to have checked is that some invitations that are extended say "do not send rep- elected offical only". While it is highly unlikely that this would be the case, check that out.
Congratulations to brothers and sisters for their awards.

Pinto, why do you think he is laying low - isn't he a friend to the Fire Service - NOT!
Mr. Prez - you should only know the pipeline to information I have, I'm retired, widower and have all day to answer Fire and EMS calls for my department, collect little tid-bits of information and keep on eye on all the posters of these Message Boards. LOL
We have met many times at meetings and will continue in the future, if you give it some thought you might figure it out. But till then keep up your fight, don't deviate from the direction your going and many of us know your heart is in the best interest of both the Fire and EMS services.

Hey John J didn't show up to a medal day to show some support to the VOLLIES but sure made it to Selden on Wed night to show support to the rep comm surprised you showed up in Selden. All you did was throw them under the bus when it came to communications tower AND TRAINING GROUNDS :">

Was Joe Carracappa at the Republician Meeting in Selden? If so that would have been a real hoot, being he wasn't much help for those guys with the Tower either.

Middle Island built theit own training tower on property they purchased and supplies either donated or bought at discount and built 100% by FD members..So if a dept.
really want to build one they can.
As for the communicationns tower, it was requested during a moratorium on such towers.
The County needs to step up and help with the FD communication problems too

I don't think Joe Caracappa had anything to do with the tower problems. Brookhaven Town and the neighbors had the problems with it. Joe was the person who got the original plot of land for the tower from the county many years ago. He was also the person that worked to change it to the land it is on now when the original plot was found to be unworkable. Joe is a past member of Selden's Jr company and as long as I have been in the department he has tried to help us when he could. I'm sure there were cases where he couldn't help or his advise fell on deaf ears. These things do happen.

Joe's Mom, when she was alive and the County Legislator, was the individual that was instrumental in getting the land for the department. That land was original slated to be a Memorial Park for the Juniors that were killed in a Motor Vehicle accident, with illusions of granger of eventually making it a drill team track.
As far as whether the property was actually workable or not, I believe the jury is still out on that one, because of the land deal which was in the workings for the rest of that property on the corner, at the time the Board dicided to start working on the site, but at this point we will never know. However a switch of 5 acres for the original 10 leaves room for question, but with politics the way it is today, we would never get a straight answer anyway.

Maybe its time we invite them to everything we do! This for a two fold purpose, first if they do show, maybe they will finally see how dedicted the FD members really are. Second, to keep a running score card, as who does and who doesn't. If they don't show, when its time for elections let the score card speak for itself.

I don't know if he made it to Islip Chiefs, but from talking to people today who were at the County Volly's Dinner last night, they said Levy was a no show. John Flanagan was there to give the oath of office and Pat Accampora to present proclamations from the State, to the 2 brothers from Bay Shore for their Heroic actions.
