Last weekend, several Centereach FD trucks caused a severe hazard at the intersection of Middle Country Road and Hallock Road in Lake Grove. The truckls were parked on the sidewalk with many of them protruding onto the road. What is the matter with these people? Do they have any regard for the community? This intersection is dangerous enough without these hooples adding to it.

Please remember we are emergency vehicles. We are to drive and park with due caution. We are sorry if we park in the middle of the street or stick out a little bit but sometimes we have to because of the conditions that exist at the scene. Since I was not there I cannot accurately comment as to why they were at the street. Keep in mind, we have been called for a Fire/Medical emergency. Our priority is to get to the scene and assist the caller. We sometimes have to park in the street due to people being inconsiderate and not making room for us to have easy access to the home/scene. Just think, if this was your family and we got to your home and were not able to park correctly (at the curbside or in your driveway) would you want us to go another block or so to find a parking space and then walk back with all our equipment and possibly loose up to 5 mins or more that we could be giving care to your loved one?? No. So please bear with us during this emergency and pass with care and accept our apologies for this "hazard" but at times it is beyond our control.

This is death alley without any of the trucks sticking out on the road. These trucks were not at a fire scene. If that was the case you would never hear a complaint from me. This was some kind of SOCIAL get-together with about three trucks and two of them protruding into the traffic lane. There was no indication why they were there. Next morning, several empty beer cans littered the sidewalk.

MD. I have very intimate knowledge of the call that you claim left several vehicles partially blocking rt 25. The called involved a tree that had fallen across hallock and severely injured one person. I chose to shut down access to hallock so that the EMS and rescue crews could work uninterrupted. About the several empty beers cans the next morning, I think you may have fabricated most of that. It is not the policy of the CFD to keep unnecessary apparatus blocking roads so any vehicles that were not needed were sent back to quarters ASAP. If you are jealous of the camaraderie at the FH I invite you to come join us and be a part and by all means bring your family along as well so they might see what we do. A person with your credentials could always help with training and a QA/PI management. Bring your friends that make unreferenced statements so they may see our "hard liquor stock" that does not exist. Please call me at the FH at your convenience so that we can discuss your misinformation and finally put to rest all of your questions and doubts.

If you have had any exposure to the fire departments on the island you would learn that most have strict drinking enforcement on the books. I do not belong to CFD but know that from my years that yes it has been a problem. Nowadays there is attn being paid to it by the dept. chiefs and boards. My dept has a policy about drinking. We would never be out drinking in an area as you described exposed to the public as you say. Most people go to the fire house after work or maybe after dinner when their kids have gone to bed and sit down with their friends and have a beer or two. I see nothing wrong with this as long as you dont go on a call after consuming any type of alcohol. Believe me, our own people watch and speak up if you do. Hard liquier, I dont think so. You might find 1 or 2 bottles around but those are usually brought down by an individual member and leaves it there for anyone else who might want or for next time a bunch are hanging out. Many a time even the member brings down the beer and it is not "FD" supplied as people might think.

Everyone has to keep in mind that being a "Fire Department Member" means you are naturally a drunk. I for one am not a drinker, have been a member of my dept for many years and know what it means to have this label and not be that way. Most people are not but we all know that there are the few that will abuse this privilidge no matter what.

Lets all be careful, look out for one another and be safe.

I do not know who you are, but you obviously do not have a grasp of anything going on in the fire department, especially the Centereach Fire Department. If you have bothered to check previous posts by Stony Brook MD, you would see that he has had a problem with the Centereach Fire Department for some time. Usually, putting forth ill-researched and venomous statements, not worthy of being commented on.

If you also bothered to look at other posts by Developer or Retailer or who ever else brought up the booze issue you will notice a very distinctive writing style that sort of indicates it is the same person. Maybe different personalities coming out at the same time every night, who knows? But either way, the statements are ridiculous and inflammatory.

As to address your post, the firehouse belongs to the community as a whole, not you, you egomaniac. If you bothered to research LOSAP statistics you would know that it does not seem to have the affect that you think it has. And as for beers in the soda machines, they have been outlawed for years.

But you would not know it because sideline heroes such as yourself find it easier to comment from a point of ignorance. Why don't you join the FD and show us what you got? As for the hinting that I am a CFD member I assure you I am not but rather volunteer in the third division which is just west of my CFD brothers. I have been involved in the fire service on this island for over 13 years in both a career and volunteer capacity and continue to do so for one reason...I still love what I do as does every firefighter who responds at a pagers activation to any emergency real or not. The stereotyping of the entire fire service from a few postings of irate individuals here is wrong. From the beginning on here I have posted get invloved make your voice heard, this still stands. If something is wrong voice your opinion or campeign for office (commissioner) get the public behind you and go for change don't just rant here.

If I want to suck down a dozen or more buds, I go to a bar and pay 3 bucks or so a piece plus tip and then have to leave when my money is no good anymore becasue its closing time. What I meant was that i pay for your social club -the cost to build it, maintain it and run it 24 hours a day. So you bring in a case of bud and put it on my ice and suck them down in front of my 88" TV. So subtract the 7.99 cents per case. Ill give you that.

Just got home from a field trip with my five year old from the Centereach Fire Dept. It was very informative. The kids learned about fire safety. We saw all the inner workings of the firehouse. They even had three calls in the hour we were there.

We were given a tour of the whole place it was very nice. We even got to se their recreation room which was modest but cozy, and yes for all you negative people out there it did have a bar. For all they do I think they deserve a place like that to relax. Another thing I did not know is that they cook around three hundred turkeys every year that are donated and given to the homeless on Thanksgiving. As I end this I hear their sirens going off again, stay safe ladies and gentlemen and thank you.

NY firemen lend a hand

As Hurricane Katrina bore down on New Orleans, a half-dozen volunteer firefighters from Long Island - in the city for a convention - were stranded when their Sunday outbound flight was canceled.

But instead of trying to leave the besieged city by other means, they offerred their skills to the city, setting up a medical triage unit in the lobby of the Hilton Hotel.

The volunteers were happy to lend a hand, said Robert Gleason, a former department chief whose son, Donald - the current chief of the Centereach Fire Department in Suffolk County - is one of those in New Orleans.

"His friends got through to him a few times today, and every time they talk to him the friends call me and say, 'He's still alive,'" Robert Gleason said.

"He's all right now, I talked to him about 1:30 and he said he was fine. He was in with the triage section, treating people," the father said.

Among the other volunteer firefighters who remained in New Orleans were Raymond Catapano and Dominick D'Onofrio, Robert Gleason said.

Donald Gleason, 44, joined the Centereach department when he was 18 but by then he was already a veteran, his father said.

"I don't know if I inspired him, but he was going out on the truck with me since he was about 7 years old," he said.
