WE'VE BEEN TOLD IN LINDENHURST THAT THE SECONDARY NOTIFICATION OF A FIRE ALARM, BY MEANS OF THE OLD TIME AIR HORNS MOUNTED ATOP EACH FIRE HOUSE IS INTENDED TO LOWER YOUR HOME OWNERS FIRE INSURANCE RATES. THE PRIMARY BEING THE PAGERS EVERYONE IS ISSUED UPON MEMBERSHIP. I'D BE INTERESTED IF ANY ONE ACTUALY GETS A REBATE FROM THEIR HOMEOWNER'S INSURANCE CO.

A secondary means of notification for structural fires is part of the ISO rating of a Fire District. While it is not mandatory it is part of it. ISO sets the standard for the fire insurance rates you pay. The better the rating of a FD the better your rates. Just a side note - this past week problems were encountered with dispatch of some FD's that didn't activate the pagers/radios of the members. In at least one instance the siren was what notified the fire/ems that they had an alarm.

Years ago, the Office of Civil Defense (now part of FEMA and Homeland Security) required sirens to be maintained for the purpose of warning civilians of aircraft or missile attack. I'm not sure if it still is in effect.

You know how many times I have been doing yard work and not had my pager on me and heard the siren blow, and knew it was time to go. Caught a job that way too. So all in all annoying or not they are helpful. Just gotta keep some dispatchers from hitting it for an alarm at 2 in the morning.
I too have made many a call hearing the siren NOT my pager over the lawn mower etc.
Just another note to the residents when you hear that siren going off, alerting YOUR first line of defense to an emergency, do you ever stop and think for a minute that someone elses life, a member of YOUR community, may be in the process of being turned upside down, while you are inconvienienced by noise for about 5 minutes?
How about thinking of the people who just dropped whatever they were doing to respond to that call for help?
Next time you hear a siren going off think about what you are doing right at that second, how fast would you be willing to drop what it is you are doing?
I also disagree with Like it, that siren should be blown ANY time there is an alarm, lets the taxpayers know we are still here.

Yeah, we all here who are typing think that. Most of us are FF or EMS. And I think he is right about being courtieous at odd hours with the siren. Just like the truck sirens, you don't blare them the whole way, it is a courtesy.

The sirens on the vehicles are for responding to emergencies, to make the rest of the world know we are there so they can yield the right of way to a fire apparatus, as is required by law.
SORRY, if there is no need to use them the whole way then we don't, IT is NOT a COURTESY NOT to use sirens. If there is traffic approaching or in front of me or if i am approaching an intersection I'M going to use my sirens and horns, be it 2pm or 2 am, sorry thats not a courtesy, thats common sense and safety for all.
Again as far as sounding the sirens on the buildings/poles SORRY to have to INCONVENIENCE YOU, I know its 3:30 AM but at least YOU can turn over and go back to sleep.
You remind me of the person that buys a house in a brand new development, then puts the horse farm next door, thats been there for over 90 years, out of business because it smells.
And just another note......considering the beginnings of the volunteer service in America, there are some citizens out there that consider those fire sirens, and what they stand for, a patriotic symbol of our communities and our country.

Yes, they're noisy. But they do work, and many times better than pagers.
I will never forget what a neighbor told me, after we arrived at her house in response to the siren. It was, she said, one of the sweetest sounds she ever heard, particularly since it went off only seconds after she called in the alarm and was followed, within 2 or 3 minutes, with the sounds of sirens and horns from the rigs that were responding.

I used to live behind the north babylon fire department headquarters, and yea the siren was annoying but i also liked it cause i have a scanner and when the siren went off i would go and turn the scanner on. theres been a few times when i was at my friends house and his dad was a fire fighter and his pager would be on the kitchen counter and when there would be a call his pager would not go off but the siren did.
The same siren is used by the county jail downt eh street from me when there is a escaped convict. the siren is there for a reason.

In Nassau County, the best ISO ratings are for all volunteer departments. The two departments with "Professionals" to not have the best ISO ratings in the county.
For the best ISO ratings the Volunteer departments are the best!

On the topic of The firehouse sirens and horns.... I am 100% for them and a Volunteer fire department with some kind of siren or horn system activated for a fire call is laimo!... There was a short time when some departments may have shut them off but most are turning back on now. In Oyster Bay we get a noon and a six o-clock "whistle". I know when it is time for lunch and when it is time to go have a beer.
Seriously, I am thankful every time I hear the siren; thankful that the dedicated volunteers (and paid personnel) are on the job. I am amazed to see the Chiefs' cars racing by with their lights going well before the siren sounds.
I knew a girl who moved to LI from the midwest. The first time she heard the noon siren she freaked out and wanted to know where the tornado shelter was. It took a while for her to get used to it.
I guess I had better not move to the midwest or I will be killed by a twister while eating lunch or having a beer.

reducing the iso rating with paid personell?? hmmm yes that would help somewhat but manpower is just one small consideration of the iso rating. there are about 10 other contributing factors to the iso rating i know i just did one for my dept a few yrs ago..........

The horns are tradition. And yes, they are practical. I live just outside of Baldwin and when I hear the siren, I know to be aware of cars going to the firehouse or truck going to the scene. It is a safety measure. It also defeats the problem of those damn solar-powered pagers....
I'm disappointed that my dept. still doesn't use it. We have it and use it during funeral processions but never for calls anymore.

The sirens were good in their time, but now they are outdated. Look in the olden times the sirens were used because there were no radios or pagers to contact the firemen when there was a call. In the old times people use to us the phone to notify the members of the department of a call. Then they went to the sirens. Most days people (The public) doesnt really care about them. They ignore them as an anoyance or turn up their car radio so they can't hear them. People living close them complain all the time about them going off at 3am in the morining and ask who the heck are the warrning at that time.
They still may be good in the day time but really after 11pm until 6ish there really is no need to have them sound for any reason other then to wake people up to a problem they need to know about.
I don't agree with your statement. I really think the scirens are good and should be kept. I don't think they have out lived them selfs yet. What happens if the radio doesnt work?

There are areas on LI where pager do not get signal any better than cell phones. Many depts. tone out the calls first, if a sig 3 is needed, then put out a general siren alarm. I have responde to many a call by siren with my silent pager on my hip.
Audible sirens and horns are very important to the fire service. Pagers are helpfull but in a couple of spots on the Island they dont work for shit. Plus the sirens give notafaction to the public that there is an alarm. Its a good heads up for the people. Blast those sirens and horns 24/7.Honk! Long Island Fire Alarm.com

me personally i love the dam things, patriotic yes, and just gives you that chill. I also believe there should be a county wide protocol on when and how long these things should be activated, yea pagers are a great thing.
But, next hurricane gloria, when i dont have power for a few days and my batteries are dead (no generator) the fire house siren will always let me know.

i personally feel sirens are much more effective than the pagers. the pagers you can sleep through or throw across the room, however the alarms can wake the dead. the general public should be ok to be discomforted some nights being that its better all the firement get up & answer the call instead of sleeping through things & not getting enough crew out for a call. Besides, who wants to wake up to a house next door being burned down with ur house being next?

As a volunteer for the LFD, the siren alerted me to a call. I was outside working (and i live about 3 blocks from the fire house) and my pager was in my vehicle and I was in the front lawn working on something. I didn't hear my pager but i heard the siren and was able to stop what i was doing to respond to the firehouse. Without the "annoying siren" as some put it, that would have been 1 less person on the call.
What if it was your house on fire, would you want a loud siren goign to get help there or would you want everything to be paged out quietly so not everybody knew what was going on.
We don't keep our pagers attached to our hips 24/7, they sit on desks, don't follow us into the shower/bathrooms/downstairs in basements. Its a RADIO it has its limitations. Metal walls will stop signals, so secondary notification is required.

If they are really concerned about noise they should solicit their elected politicians to legislate regulation and penalties for things like loud car radios, landscaping equipment, construction equipment, automoble and commercial bldg. alarm systems all of which are larger problems and have no public saftey impact.

There are still "newcomers" in our town who constantly complain about the fire siren sounding for alarms and at noon. The siren, and before it a bell and a gong has been active for almost one hundred years. But every few years some crackpot moves into the business district and makes a fuss over the noise and it always starts some crap. We have a ton of locals who have lived and worked on Main Road for their entire lives and some say they hear the noon siren and know it's lunch time etc. Rule of thumb: when you open a business somewhere it probably pays to check the location BEFORE you lay out tons of money and time towards it. This way if your unhappy with something you can place your business elsewhere!
We ahd the same thing. A few local business owners tried to sue the Fire District because of the sirene, they lost. But lets face it, there are idiots all over.
Save the Horn,
In Sierra Madre, homeplace of the Ugly Brothers, we have a pretty good lifestyle. No traffic lights, people park in the middle of the street for a chat, and our local volunteers are a source of great civic pride. The volunteers of the Sierra Madre Search & Rescue Team and the Sierra Madre Volunteer Fire Department are selfless in the sacrifices they make for our community and they are regarded as our heroes.
The SMVFD has a long history...... Before the days of pagers the SMVFD was alerted by the blast of a horn on top of city hall. They worked out a code so that by the number of blasts the firemen would know what part of town to go to in the event of a fire. To ensure the system was working properly it was always tested at noon everyday. The "noon whistle" became a part of our lives and kind of a subconscious way of knowing that everything was as it should be. The noon blast has continued because it is now the official backup system in case of problems with radio transmissions.
We like our town, and so do other people but we have a real problem when these yahoos from other places come in and try to make our town like the ones they moved here from. Some of these transplants don't like our horn. In fact, bunch of these bozos were responsible for getting the noon whistle changed to 7:00pm and then, the ingrates were successful in having it banned outright! It seems it disturbed their vibes when they were sitting down for their frappe mocha whatever.
The answer seems obvious, these Johnny-come-lately's should stop honking their horns at us natives as we have our middle of the road chats and move to someplace where they have a paid fire department with a large enough budget that it doesn't have to depend on calling volunteers to help fight their fires. It is time for all native Sierra Madreans to stand up for their birthright and say with pride.... blow me daily!

Let people bitch... when their house is burning down because not everybodys pager was on and the air horn didnt sound, then they'll change stories... we ring it once at noon (like A LOTTTTTTTTT of towns) and during fires (like EVERY town i know of)... we could be like north lindenhurst, and ring it for every ambulance call...

Let people bitch... when their house is burning down because not everybodys pager was on and the air horn didnt sound, then they'll change stories... we ring it once at noon (like A LOTTTTTTTTT of towns) and during fires (like EVERY town i know of)... we could be like north lindenhurst, and ring it for every ambulance call...

A secondary means of notification for structural fires is part of the ISO rating of a Fire District. While it is not mandatory it is part of it. ISO sets the standard for the fire insurance rates you pay. The better the rating of a FD the better your rates. Just a side note - this past week problems were encountered with dispatch of some FD's that didn't activate the pagers/radios of the members. In at least one instance the siren was what notified the fire/ems that they had an alarm.

OK salesperson I went to the website and it is just selling airsirens. Doesn't tell me why, pager seems to be working fine, we don't need those load sirens going off for every alarm, if its an ambulance call why do we need the siren to go off? We need to wake up the whole town bc one person who stubbed there toe called an ambulance?
That website does not sell anything. In fact advertising on that site is strictly forbidden. And if it was your toe that was stubbed or broken or worse yet a member of your family having a heart attack, you might not mind a minute of noise to get the help you need.
Pagers fail, there are dead spots, batteries go dead. There is no substitute for an audible alarm system.
Until the day comes when our firehouses are manned with full crews 24/7, wheather they be volunteer or paid, audibles will be a fact of life.

If so needed then how come there are towns that don't use them. If so needed why don't it go off past 10pm....... don't pagers fail then too, don't batteries die at that time at night.....If you don't need it at 2am you don't need it at 2pm........

It should never be turned off, that's the point. The idea of redundancy is to have a backup when you need it the most. At 3 pm, the residents most likely will be awake alert and able to leave the house. At 3am, the residents are awake (if they're lucky) and trapped. It's at that point that every possible method should be used to get the fire department out of bed and on their way.

Many years ago, a very wise lady in my district, who lived right underneath one of our sirens told me that when her children were young that she always taught them that they should never be afraid of the siren. The siren was actually good news because it meant that someone was getting the help that they needed, and that the siren would blow for almost every one of us at some time or other during our lives.
I never forgot what she told me and have repeated it to many people over the years. This same lady now lives 3 houses away from one of our even larger sirens. Well, the sirens blew for her last week, twice. (The 1st time she RMAd). But on the 2nd time, I was with her in the ambulance and reminded her of what she told me so many years ago. As terrible as she felt and through her labored breathing she told me again that she always has and always will consider the siren to be a blessing, a messenger of good news.
Isn't it a shame that more people cannot understand the value that these devices have in both good times and bad.

YOU HAVE A PAGER NOW!!!!!!!!!!!! Many departments do very well without sounding there siren.

Can i ask you this. North Lindy air siren is going off then there tones go off. sig 16 CVA 1-11-7 (i think it was 7) is sig 2. if you have a rig sig 2 what is the need for the air siren to be blasting. Honestly why would u need to blast it when your rig is already sig 2?

Too Bad If It Annoys Them, They Will Be Very Happy To Hear It When They Are Having Respiratory Issues Or There Are Flames Shooting From The House They Have Lived In For 50 Years.
They didn't sign up to volunteer, you did. So if you are woken up in the dead of winter that is all your fault. You are the one who wanted to volunteer. HEaring the sirens go off while in the middle of having respiratory diff and having no one show up for 30 minutes doesnt give me much relief. I heard them go off twice and still took 30 minutes and another town came. Yeah you should be real proud.

YES I AM PROUD. Btw when your pager fails at 2AM and those dam sirens don't go off to warn you, how do people get the ambulance out? Some how no sirens at 2am and a better response is recorded. HUM how is that possible. Yet at 2pm the sirens go off and no one shows. Yeah I can see how those sirens really are helping. keep telling yourself the siren are needed. One day someone might listen.
