If suffolk County went Paid....would you volunteers consider taking the job? If they paid $43,000 starting would you guys take the job. The one thing that will make me leave florida and return to NY is if suffolk county agencys start paying EMTs and Medics. I heard the Center Moriches and N. Patchoge have been hiring...i heard that CIHVA has been doing it for awhile paying $13 an hour.

I hope that if they do that they hire from within. My dept has had nothing but damaged vehicles and complaints of rudeness from hired EMT's who leave the equipment in a big mess and expect the vollies to clean up their mess while they watch movies or sleep.
Then get controll over your paid guys, THEY are guests in OUR houses. There is NO reason to even START to put up with that crap.
Coram has a paid EMS crew on duty from midnight to 6pm/365. Vollies cover the rest. Not sure what the pay/bennies are.

Most agencies in Suffolk are now hiring some type of EMS. By the way, Coram's salary is over 40K a year and that does not include OT and Holiday pay. Plus we get full state benefits, state pension, and retirement after 25 years. 4 on 4 off schedule. So to answer your questions, there are plenty of places hiring EMS in Suffolk and Nassau. Coram is one of the best gigs out there. Some others are: N. Patchogue, Middle Island, Terryville, Rocky Point, Gordon Heights, Wading River, Riverhead, Port Jeff, Setauket, Ridge, South Country, Shirley, Mastic, Westhampton, East Moriches, Manorville, Mastic Beach, Hampton Bays, Yaphank, Smithtown, St. James, Nesconset, Kings Park, Brentwood, CI/Hauppage, and more. Those are just some of the agencies, there are more. Some pay good, and some don't. Plenty of calls and not enough people answering them. Be Safe........

I work full time as a medic and work part time in suffolk county being a medic for some of the fire dept/ ambulance squads. I think it's a great thing, knowing there is guaranteed to be a paid professional in your district to run ALS. The place I currently work for is paying me $20 an hour and so far the volly squad and I have gotten along great. I just wish my fire dept would wise up and get paid medics in my town soon.

Wish I had that control. If that was the case I would have cleaned house already. Complaints usually fall on deaf ears. This one is the commish's kid's friend that one is that one's friend etc...
There are "ways" to gain that controll, use your head, adjust, adapt, overcome. Get creative.
Next time the rig is trashed collect all the garbage in one of those red bags, save it, when the paid guys go on a run DUMP IT IN THEIR PERSONAL VEHICELS, leave a note explaining you were just trying to keep their garbage they left in the rig from getting stolen. You'll figure it out.
EMS crews, just a note, (i do believe this IS NOT a wide spread problem) CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR TOUR!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the ideas! But in all seriousness, There are a few on that crew who are dedicated individuals and actually care. So let me not generalize. I'm just hoping the ones who do not follow basic civility will get the message. Paid or Vollie we are all in this thing together. Good Luck and Safe Ride till the next "BIG ONE"..

MIFD, thank you for your very mature response. Would you also suggest that when the paid crew gets in in the morning that they do the same with the mess the vollies leave behind? Or does it only apply to the evil paid crew people. And, how can you justify your post saying that "THEY" are guests in "OUR" houses - when the paid crew is there answering calls in "your" uniform on "your" ambulance representing "you" to the community for 1/2 the day then it seems to me that it's just as much "their" house as it is "your" house. With an attitude like yours it's no wonder your paid crew probably doesn't like you - and - if they haven't worked some place where the vollies treated them decently they probably don't like vollies any more in general. If we all just realized that we're on the same team here, trying to do the same job and treated each other with a little respect I think we would all enjoy our time at the firehouse a lot more. Sure you're gonna have bad apples and people you don't like, but there's really no need for the paid crew vs. vollie animosity. So - get the bus out and for some people - grow up - Peace.

North Patchogue has gone 24/7 365 with paid first responders. They were also one of the first to start with first responders in the past.
My problem is not with districts that recognize the problem and have the foresight and the courage to deal with it before it reaches the crisis level, but with our elected officials who won't attempt to study never mind implement a solution.
This is a county wide problem and it is not fair to our citizens that some districts can afford to pay first responders, but others can't. And why should individual districts pay the costs. That's not to mention that we need a county wide standard for care level and training.

I do not believe that a paid Fire Service will come anytime soon, for the simple fact that the volume of fire jobs (assignments) comes nowhere near the volume of EMS jobs (assignments). So what, you say? Well, to answer your unasked question, the problem that appears to be prevalent is the lack of timely EMS response and staffing.....not firematics. Now as I have stated many times, I will not detract from what firefighters do. Never that. But they do not do anywhere near the sheer volume of assignments that EMS does, and as a result are less likely to get burned out, which in turn will leave you with a more viable volunteer fire service, than a volunteer EMS service. I am not saying that there will never be a paid fire service....sometime.....deep in the far future...but it will absolutely not come before a paid EMS service...that you can bank on. Now if anyone feels that I am wrong, misguided, or misinformed here, please by all means....reply.
P.S. I only made this response in terms of firematic paid vs. EMS paid because your posting had this:

Most districts do have paid fireman they just rename the title and feel better about themselves. There are a few places where the majority of the responding apparatus (fire) is paid staff, "housemen". As far as there being places that can't afford to put on paid EMS, BULLSHIT. I find that hard to believe!!! I know for a fact that some of the smallest districts and some of the poorest districts staff paid, so there really is no excuse. Maybe they need to look into misuse of funds or stop buying useless stuff, like 400 new sweatshirts every year. You know what I mean. For example I can think of 2 very busy districts that are having lots of problems getting out and will not put one paid EMS guy on. One place has mechanics, dispatchers, housemen, but no EMS, and they are always top ten busiest in Fire/EMS calls a year. It is really annoying places that surround them. I should know I am a paid medic in the district next store. I actually have frequent fliers in there district, thats SAD....... Anyway I am off my soapbox now, everyone be safe and have fun. I didn't want to name names, just wanted to point it out.

$43K?????? I wouldn't quit my NYC job for $43K.......let Medics start at $52K and work up to $65K in 5 years...then you've got my attention...
But on the issue of availability of money to do this...if you figure the actual amount of:
salaries, benefits, disability, insurance, vehicle maintenance, administrative personnel, training, equipment, other logistics, the combined funding of all the departments in Suffolk County probably would not be enough to cover the costs.
You figure:
Div 1 (town of Babylon):
10 BLS units, 4 ALS; 2 persons each, a Division Chief, 3 patrol supervisors (one Captain, two Lieutenants). Salaries woud be (respectively):
$35,000 to $45,000 after 5 years
$47,000 to $57,000 after 5 years
$70,000
$60,000
$53,000
Rough figures, but if you take the amount of personnel required (two persons per line unit per tour, 3 tours, not including the supervisor units), your total salary cost at the onset would be $1,039,000. But thinking about the number of calls in the 1st Div. alone, you would probably need more units than that and the cost goes up...and that number is salary alone. I'm basing this on salaries being set up to attract experienced personnel to help start off the operation, and is not to be assumed that anyt such plan has actually been drawn up for any such action. Many may feel that these numbers are not realistic in terms of the County possibly wanting to go cheaper. But I just wanted to give a basic example.

It would do us good to investigate and learn more about the AFL CIO. This helps us to understand the end game motives of the IAFF. If firefighters understood end game goals of the national unions I don't believe they would support them.

Tax cuts were across the board. The top 10% of Americans pay 70% of the taxes. Give a 2% tax brake to a person making 50,000 a year and another making 2 million and the outcome is obvious. The millionairs don't get a bigger tax break. They just see more money from the cuts because they pay more. If you remember in order to make this happen we actually gave money to people who didn't even pay taxes.

And what would the AFL CIO's solution be to this. Isolationism such as the Russians had when they were under communist rule. Don't allow competition and capitalism to rule the day. Let the government mandate if a business stays open or closes, where they are located, what they pay employees. Put the government in control of big business. Work for the state. Let us spread the wealth and insure all have job security whether you deserve it or not. There is a name for this. It's COMMUNISM. Oh! Lets not forget the unions and their antics aren't responsible for these business's relocating to greener pastures. The right to work states in the south that have a lower cost of living, Jobs a plenty, workers with more spending money, and cheap housing to spare is the product of the croocked capitalist pigs.

Wrong again! This does not apply to Firefighters and workers that perform manual labor. This is an effort to update an older version of a law that is costing us millions if not billions of dollars in lawsuits brought on by non other that the unions and lawyers. Of course they don't want the law to change. In it's present version the law gives the union a way to justify it's presents and it's lining the pockets of some of the union's favorite allies, LAWYERS!

Again, let's nationlize business so every individual is treated exactly the same. We need to create a nation with a more socialized government like the Europeans who are forced to pay higher taxes, have a higher unemployment rate, are unable to effectively recover from economic downturns, and don't have near the opportunity we are afforded in America.
Let's really tackel our broken unemployment compensation progam. Lets sink more money into it regardless of the unmitigated monstrous abuse of the system this country and its taxpayers suffer.

In this last portion of the article is becomes so transparent that the author is attempting to lead you down a road that will end up taking away your freedoms and livelyhood. These people want to make it mandatory for an employer to have to hire and keep you on. They want to make it mandatory that an employer pay you a minimum of what they feel is a living wage. This might sound good but try to get a business off the ground if you are a little guy. Small business owners would be devistated by this legislation. They will make it almost impossible for a little guy to do the things necessary to make a success of themselves. They are pulling the rug out from under the little guy and attacking the very essense of what makes this country great. THIS IS THE LAND OF OPPORTUNITY NOT THE LAND OF ENTITLEMENT!

It isn't much of a stretch from here, folks.... with a little help from our Congress, big labor could do some serious screwing with our capitalist, free-market system, with our right to work and with even our Constitution.
I'm not willing to let that happen without screaming about it.
Right now, I'm pretty focused on this election, but I can see this being another issue I could get behind, later, when I'm not buried with work.

Just so everyone knows because the question was asked, North Patchogue has 3 paid ems personell on at all times. 1 is a dispatcher, 1 is a "First Responder", and 1 is a driver for the ambulance if vollies do not call in (And a DM who is also a driver on the ambulance as needed as well as a mechanic who is the same). The system North Patchogue adopted in one of the better because it does not eliminate the vollies, it allows vollies 4 min. to call in and 6 min. to respond. When 4 min is up and nobody called in the driver leaves to meet the 1st responder at the scene. Otherwise if the vollies respond the 1st responder goes with the vollie crew and picks up the 1st responder vehicle and now becomes the 1st responder of the group. There is ussually 1 ALS provider on every shift.
Number 2: FFMedic, no offense but you are wrong, 99% of the departments out there that used the job title of houseman and made them respond as fireman were forced to stop, that was not their job description and if you do your research you will see that everyone that worked at a fireman/houseman, were told to turn in the gear and became regular 1st responders for the ems side or their job was eliminated. The only way they get away with it now is to have the houseman "clock out" before he goes on a call, so in my book that is not being a paid fireman.
Anyways just my 2 cents.

I dont bad mouth volunteers, iam one myself but i would feel safer knowning if paid people that are there to respond in moments of a call.
If suffolk went paid i wouldnt get rid of vol. ambulance
i would include them in the system. Start out with paid first response and then overtime go over to full staffed ambulances. Its time to see that in this growing threat of terrorism and WMD is suffolk county ready? Paid fire? not yet because ive seen fire response times and they are good from where i used to live, the ambulance...another story.

Suffolk County Police Ambulance!!!!! Nassau does it, why cant we. Nassau's Cops are paid well & they can still afford it. Waiting 40 minutes for an ambulance thats around the corner, thats sick. Paying taxes and getting crap, thats even sicker!

hey smarta--, I do volunteer (a line officer actually), but the fact is we need paid ems, except no one wants to admit it. When I call 911 for an amb, id like the amb to be there within a reasonable amount of time, not have the call bounced around the county for 40 minutes.

move to south countrys district, they get there fast
A few of the real problems here is the call volume and the inability to provide enough volunteers to answer all the calls, still maintain a family, work a regular job and not get burnt out. The system does not have to be completely paid, but sooner or later a combination Paid - Volunteer system is inevitable.

If the system is on the brink of failure its only because the state, county and the fire districts have caused it to happen. New regulations come out every year, putting a bigger strain on the volunteer system. Maybe this is because the person in charge is looking at the paid NYC fire departments and feels we should be the same way. However, what works in NYC does not necessarily work here on the island. For years we use to scoop and run. Get the patient to the hospital and return home. All of a sudden, that was not good anymore. Now we spend 20 – 30 min. working on a patient even before we put them in the ambulance. An average ambulance call for my department back when, use to be 45 min. from the time we left till we were back in the house. Unless we stopped along the way to get coffee. Now were talking about, hour, and ½. Why? There really is no need for this when your only 15 min. from the hospital (In most cases, not all). Why not just get the patient to the hospital where trained doctors who have 1000’s of years in school can do their job.
The other part of this problem is the districts throwing people out because they can only give a small amount of time to the department is wrong. Do not give me the BS about insurance costs, and the cost of physicals, the members never asked to have to take a yearly physical. We were told we had to. Most members have their own insurance where we can get our own physicals. If the department wanted to they could reimburse the cost of the co-payment. For the members who do not have insurance then the department can pay for them. Most members complain that they just got their physical from their own doctor and now they have to get another one from the department’s doctor. Do not tell me it is the cost of equipment. When I joined the department, I was directed to a rack of turnout equipment and told to pick something that fit me. When I was in the department for a year, I got new equipment. If the equipment I was using was still good it was put back on the rack for the next new member, if not it was trashed and replace by other equipment coming from a departing member.

Think about all the $100,000 firemen, pentions and bennifits, sick leave 3/4 disabillity, workmans comp and 1000 other things that they will need to be paid for. Don't forget the school for training them that would have to be built and maintained. Hell your complaining about your taxes now, could you hear yourself then? But remember once started it cant be taken away so you will have to live for $12000 - $15000 taxes a year or move out. I my self am not ready to be forced to move out of the area I was born in just because you want a job.

I BELEIVE DEER PARK FD WAS THE FIRST TO HIRE PAID EMTS/CC'S SEVERAL YEARS AGO, THEY HAVE CREWS ON FROM 5AM TO 7PM, AND 1 MEDIC ON FROM 7PM TO 5AM. ALSO NOW HAVE A PAID EMS SUPERVISOR, VOLUNTEERS STILL RIDE THE AMBULANCE. THEY DO GET MANY 2ND, AND 3RD AMUBLANCE CALLS AT ONE TIME, GOOD SYSTEM. NOW MOST DEPTS ON LONG ISLAND ARE FOLLWING THIS SYSTEM.

In response to the poster "Guest" on 4/3/05, the whole "why don't we just transport" argument has be obsolete for many years now. Many cases that we deal with can be treated on scene to the same level of care that the ER will provide, but much, much sooner. To delay patient care by just transporting is negligent. In the case of trauma, sure, definitive care is at a trauma center, and the patient needs rapid transport. But as we learn in ACLS, PALS, etc., early ALS is key to good patient outcome in medical patients. Example: Cardiac Arrest. You cannot perform CPR while transporting a patient to the same standard that you can on scene. And if you have ALS available, you have essentially brought the ER to the patient. The patient has the best chance of a good outcome being treated where they fell, receiving the same treatment that they would in the Emergency Department, but without the wait. The tight asthmatic who cannot move air. Getting the ball rolling by treating with beta adrenergists, steroids, and smooth muscle relaxers immediately can prevent that patient from going into arrest, or they can be intubated so that we can move that air for them until they get to the ER. And every minute that a severely hypoglycemic patient goes without getting that much needed dextrose means more and more dead brain cells, that the ER cannot give back.
Bottom line: These slight "delays" save lives. These are just a few examples, and as any experienced provider can attest, there are many more, where the inconvience that the vollies experience waiting on scene is greatly outweighed by the benefit that the patient receives.
And to deer park, there have been paid responders in numerous departments since the 1980's, early 1990's.
not only is deer park paid, in town of babylon the following where next: west babylon went paid 5 yrs ago. it seems to be working. the paid get out on district calls and combine with the vollies for 2nd 16s (rescue calls), mutual aid, child and forthwith calls. seems to be working very well. lindenhurst was 3rd. they went paid within the last year. seems to have helped but we still hear a few help needed calls. copaigue went paid in january. they now are getting out on calls. see it all works and the community gets helped.

I'd be more worried about all the political appointments and supervisory positions put in place, so the people in power could get their relatives jobs, I dont see 100k firemen. You are basing this on SCPD, who has a outrageous political machine for a Union. The County would not let that happen again.They would limit many of the civil service perks prior to hiring any potential firemen or emts.
Then of course the County would try to recoup some losses with a nice little fee for the ambulance ride for the taxpayers.

Get rid of 90% of it and we could save millions. One engine could cover the whole district with a crew of 5 professional firefighters. This is prevalent throughout the island.
