Does anyone know how and where I can get copies of budgets of vollie departments throughout Nassau County? Are copies of these individual budgets filed with any Village, County, or state agency?

I Think the best way to get a copy of the bidget is to join your local dept. not every one has to be paid for this job.. just leave the budgets and vollies alone

You need to relax, he was just asking a simple question man. How do you know he wasnt considering it until that lovely response?? Jesus Christ, just cause he works for FDNY you gonna castrate the guy, he does the same job we do, he just liked it enough to get paid for it. Whats the harm in that man. Then you wonder why some people dont like volunteers.

Did you work in Munsen in Franklin Square? And did you disappear with $6000 of our taxpayer money? Or was that your friend thta disappeared with our money?
If you really serve the public and not your own interest you should be more than happy to show we the taxpayers your fire house budget. If you are trying to hide the budget, then maybe we should investigate your fire house because maybe you trying to hide theft or some other criminal conduct.

Sorry to get off the topic. I used to work in Franklin Square and saw it on fire apparatus and never knew...where is Munsen in Franklin Square??

Obtained the following from Franklin Square's site.
Franklin Sqaure FD was formed by a merger of the Munson and Franklin Square companies.
Franklin Square covers Franklin Square, Garden City South, and Part of West Hempstead.
I am not sure if Munson was the name of the company, an earlier name for a village e.g. Garden City South, or the name of the owner / member of the farm land who provided the land for the first fire house.
Could not find any other information on Munson on the web.

The Franklin Square and Munson Fire Department traces its roots back to the early part of the Twentieth Century. After several large fires occurred within the community, the need for some type of fire protection became critical. The first fire company, Hook and Ladder Co. #1 of Munson, was organized in 1907. It consisted of a horse-drawn cart with ladders and buckets. The unit was housed in the town's first fire house, built by the company members on an area of farmland donated by one of the members. A large bell, donated from an old schoolhouse in town, was mounted on the roof of the firehouse. Whenever a fire broke out within the community, the bell was rung; sending out a signal to all of the volunteer firefighters. They would come running to with their horses to pick up the ladder cart and go to the scene. A reward was always given to the member who responded with the first set of horses to pull the ladder cart.
As the years past the town continued to grow. As a result, more of a firefighting force was needed. In 1923 another group of men organized the Franklin Square Hose and Chemical Company. This company acquired a motorized engine and housed it in a second firehouse in downtown Franklin Square. The following year, both of the community's fire companies merged to form the Franklin Square and Munson Fire Department.
The department protects an area of about three square miles consisting of Franklin Square, Garden City South, and parts of West Hempstead, with a population of approximately thirty thousand people

stop complaing and just join your local dept.
true the tax payers should have a right to see the budget but they better not complain or the can get thier lazy buts up. to do the dirty disguting jobs that we do. hey taxpayer would you be up set if every member of your local fire dept got a microwave to heat up there dinner they just left on the table with there family. because someone in the community needed help.
it just annoys me when peple have to make comments about the fire dept budgets

Are you kidding me this forum is a three ring circus who are you to tell someone they can't complain. The majority of vollie Dept's are overspending abusive places where the majority of calls aren't even answered. So before you tell someone not to complain get a reality check, 1st amendment freedom of speech complain about whatever you want especially if it's your money. And believe me the majority of vollies are not leaving their food on their plate, take a look at the size of most of them.

GCFD is funded from the Incorporated Village of garden city property taxes on residential and commercial properties.
The fire department is a combination department comprised of five companies with 34 career firefighters and 120 volunteer firefighters. 4 Engines, 2 trucks (aerial & tower lader ), one heavy rescue, 1 ultility vehicle, and four cheifs cars.
Engines replaced every 20+ years, Trucks replaced every 25+ years.
The fire department budget per the 2003/2004 Village Annual Report is:
$ 3,719,165 Fire Department (Equipment and payroll for combination department)
$ 1,300,000 Benefits and NYS Fire Retirement System (Estimated as percentage of fire employees to police and other employees)
$ 5,019,165 Estimated Total.
Represents about 11% of village budget of 45,634,124.

OK lets get back to the real reason for all the fuss.
The national FF union is aggresively attacking all vollie Departments in attempt to clear out Vollies and replace them with Union Firefighters.
The Union lobbied Kerry to sponser a bill that would ban
any Paid firefighter from joining or participating in thier local vollie Dept. To take affect in 2008.
So what is the real reason for all this MONEY!!

the bravest cry a little more about your right to complain i dont think you got everyone hating the fdny yet. good job keep up the good work my dept alone answered over 3000 alarms last year the majority were aided cases. but not one of them were denied treatment or assistance from the so called vollies. and i still have not seen a paycheck yet.

Roosevelt had a 10 about 2 weeks ago and after several attempts needed to call mutual aid from Uniondale whom arrived FIRST DUE. I recall this happening a couple of years ago as well in Roosevelt! Actually I recall several times, ask anyone from Uniondale, they normally back them up! Listen to the radio, multiple requests for status (EMS/FIRE) often you'll hear a chief take care of incident all by themselves b/c no response. Of course 1 Chief is better then noone at all, but the fire won't go out without the wet stuff. Hope it pours!!! They all do eventually go out, we would rather not see them burn themselves out though!!!

Can all volunteer budgets be obtained from the freedum of information act or the rules providing financial information based on the Not For Profit tax rulles for 15C3?

You can obtain a copy at your towns commissioners meeting, they are public and anyone can attend, give a quick buzz over to the fire headquarters of your town and they will let you know when the next meeting is!

On paper volunteers make up a significantly larger percentage of the nations firefighting ranks, but what does it mean? Well, for starters, despite the apparent advantage in the raw number of bodies, volunteers only protect 25% of the nations population. All of your urban and major population centers are under the protection of paid firefighters. Basically, the percentages are inverse. Volunteers allegedly outnumber paid 4 to1, and yet paid provide protection to the populace by about that same 4 to 1 ratio. I would also submit that the number of paid firefighters is fairly accurate while the number of volunteers is suspect at best. My department claims about 160 or so members. I am sure that this is the number that they report to the various volunteer organizations to which they belong. My departments true strength is perhaps 1/3 of that number. So, if one were to extrapolate upon this, than the actual number of volunteers out there who are available to respond is probably not all that much greater than the number of paid personnel. Even if none of this were so, what the hell does it have to do with anything? I think the point upon which this thread was started was: how much money is being expended for fire protection here on the Island and what is the taxpayer getting in return? If I may offer my answer it would be that we are spending too much. At least, that is, too much for a service that wants to be allowed more than nine minutes to have an ambulance at your house. Too much for a service that all too often is about saving your foundation and protecting the adjacent properties. I would speculate that despite allocating more than enough financial resources to providing fire protection, Long Island experiences one of the highest percentages of dollar value lost to fire per dollar spent on fire protection. Any one out there want to contradict this guess?

Why don't you try facts and figures. Basing facts and figures based on the strength of one dept. (My departments true strength is perhaps 1/3 of that number. If you really wanted to present your case, why don't you take the time to do a little research and present facts. Maybe then, someone might take you seriously...but then again, after reading your thread, why bother..Its easier to just spread garbage

there is just no way that you could ever get a true count of the number of volunteers. Paid firefighters pay Union dues. Those dues are tabulated on a per capita basis and thus are a true and accurate accounting of their membership. As for the volunteers, there really is no true accounting. A member may join and quit but nobody ever scratches their name from the rolls. They may move to another jurisdiction and join up and thus be counted twice (or more). Others haven't been on a call in years and they are still counted. My department counts all ex-chiefs as lifetime members. There are also a good many dead people on my departments roster. Apparently your name stays on until your corpse has fully decomposed. I'm sure the membership practices used here are not unique to us. As far as your objecting to my resorting to speculation, I'm sorry you feel that way. Would you rather I just stated my opinions as fact? Look, if I don't know something, I say so. It's called conjecture. All I'm looking to do is provoke thought on the subject. I believe we are getting a poorly provided service in return for what it's costing the taxpayers here on the Island. I'm never going to be able to factually establish this. It is my learned opinion. What a particular department thinks of it's performance may be very different from what I think of it. In the end, all I want is for people to examine the record of performance of their respective departments, and the cost associated with it, and ask whether or not they are getting their money's worth. I think I already know the answer they will come up with.

havent seen ya post in a while ltjag, glad to see ya back....you speak very political, im curious as to what dept you are from?.....you also seem anti-vollie, me being a paid ff and a volunteer ff i think i speak for everyone or at least the majority....can't we all get along??? the volunteer budgets in most departments are quite high and it's true they shouldn't be, but the truth of the matter is you will never see Long Island dept's. go fully paid...sorry buddy

I don't know about Nassau but I know in Suffolk the departments are funded by individual townships. Brookhaven Town in Suffolk County has the budget of each department, both fire and rescue, online.

Alas a paid fire service here on the Island will never be more than a dream. Why? Because government never, ever, does the right thing. Instead of confronting the serious failure that is the volunteer system, our chosen leaders instead bury their heads in the sand. One poster here suggests that we will only see a push for paid or part paid departments after some politicians family member lies waiting 45 minutes for an ambulance. Maybe. But I don't even think that will get it going. The problem is that we are saddled with all these little fiefdoms and, with them, their Napoleanic leaders. They are too enamored of their status within their organizations to publicly admit that which they absolutely know in their hearts: The system sucks. The answer, of course, is consolidation of departments coupled with either town or county-wide paid members. This should be for both Fire and EMS. Everywhere else in the country Fire and EMS are grouped together to give the taxpayer the best public safety value for their tax dollar. Splitting them only leads to increased costs due to the separate lines of management and leadership that each branch would demand. This is just not neccessary. The world of public safety is ever changing. It is absolutely remarkable that the system for providing it is so stubbornly resistant to change. It seems that everyone agrees that something has to be done about the EMS aspect, but everyone seems to turn a blind eye to the Fire side of the public safety equation. Just the other day there was a picture in Newsday of a garage fire somewhere which I felt was a perfect depiction of the state of the fire service here on the Island. There was a ripping fire in an attached garage. There on the driveway apron was one FF suiting up to initiate an attack. The story went on to say, I think, maybe three departments were called in for manpower. Thats just wrong. You should not need to summon two or three neighboring departments in order to muster enough manpower to confront a house fire. If your department can't put a staffed engine and ladder at scene within 10 minutes of a call than your department is not meeting its obligation to its taxpayers. Of course, there will be those who respond to this post with the usual chicken little BS about how we can't afford a paid service here on the Island. To them I say take a look at what is being spent collectively for fire and EMS protection island-wide. I think you'll find that the money is there. As to those who think the salaries would go the way of the PD's, I can tell you first hand that you are dead wrong. As an 11 year Lt. here in LB, my base is far eclipsed by a fifth year patrolman in our PD. This is because the PD are not threatened by the auxillaries like the paid FF's are by the volunteers. There's no reason to think this wouldn't be the case everywhere else that combination departments set up. So, a combination system invariably exerts a downward influence on the wages of those who comprise it's paid component. There is money for combination departments here on the Island. More importantly, there is a glaring need for them. The only thing standing in the way is the volunteer departments. As long as we continue to elect invertabrates into public office nothing will change. It is incumbent upon those within the volunteer fire service to look themselves in the mirror and admit failure. Not for a lack of good intentions mind you, but good intentions don't get the job done. The fire service needs to wake up to reality and urge our politicians to earnestly pursue the institution of combination departments. This is the only way we can meet the needs of the public who rely on us. How 'bout it fellas?

Does anyone know how and where I can get copies of budgets of vollie departments throughout Nassau County? Are copies of these individual budgets filed with any Village, County, or state agency?

Its amazing how jealous you loser vollies are of the FDNY. You idiots look for any excuse to bash the FDNY. Its not anyones fault you were too stupid to pass the written test, too fat to pass the physical, mentally unstable to pass the pysch, and couldn't pass a background investigation because you have a past criminal history.
