John Palermo will be elected village trustee today, and has no interest in being chief until he decides not to run for re-election. Plaermo has already clearly stated that he thinks being on the Village Board and being a leadership position like Captain could be a conflict of interest.
Cozzetto, he ran, and he did not do to well. I think from talking with him he is looking forward to continuing on Fire Council and not really intrested in being Chief for a while.

It is really so unsettling when you read and learn how much politics are involved in the FD. Politics has consumed the school board, and I guess also the FD. I just pray that it one day does not get down to depending which political party a person belongs to will determine the response time.
It's time for the boys in the FD to look around and see what they have let their organization turn into. It's time for all communities to come together instead of further fractionalizing themselves.

It's good to see the public expressing their concerns and I applaud you for that. Let me first say, please don't believe everything you read on these boards. You are either served by Lindenhurst FD or North Lindenhurst FD, depending on where you live. You have some really great guys serving you. Sure, there are the bad apples but hey, every organization and company has them. The corruption comes into play with the commissioners of fire departments. The members simply perform their duties. Please do not think for one minute that your political party would have ANY effect on response time. It's clear that you have concerns with your local Fd so I urge you to attend one of their fundraisers and get to know the firefighters. It's the best way to get any information you may be looking for.

For the public to demand to know why firehouses are being turned into virtual palaces on the taxpayers dime. Every time I look, I see fire depts. like N. Lindy, E. Farm., N. Amityville building great big additions and nightclubs. WHERE THE HELL DOES ANYONE THINK THIS MONEY IS COMING FROM, BESIDES THE POOR SCHLEP TAXPAYERS???

Okay, number one NONE of these depaertments are building night clubs! Where do you even get that? Second off, have you ever been inside one of these depts.' firehouses?? For the most part, these buildings needed to be replaced/added to. These depts. don't rebuild constantly like you're making it sound. Keep in mind, some depts do not have to answer to the town. They get their money and that's it.

Yes, it may be a problem with some departments. The depts. that do not have to answer to the town are those that are incorporated, meaning they are a business, rather than a service. There are not too many. But just because they don't have to answer to the town doesn't mean they waste money like crazy. Remember, it's really not fair to generalize.

Please don't attack me as sexist. I would formulate this same image of a male poster if he gushed on and on as you have. Can no one dampen your zeal to blindly defend the indefensible. The money, per se, is not the problem. In fact, I've never heard anyone complain about the cost of fire protection. The problem is the product. Your loyal defense of the volunteer system is laudable. The problem is you're cheering for a team that just can't seem to move the ball.

For someone who was so dead set against keeping the postings mature and on topic, you really are doing a good job! Sorry, but you're wrong. I'm not a member in LIFD or any FD. I just happen to have, perhaps a little too much, inside knowledge of the local FDs. I defend (not blindly) the volunteers because they do a good job and deserve respect for it. You have not read carefully enough if you can't see that people are complaining about the money. Fire palaces? Race teams? Unnecessary equipment? That's all about "wasteful spending" which is MONEY! My loyalty to the volunteer system may be "laudable" in your opinion and that's fine, you're entitled to your opinion, but that doesn't mean these guys shouldn't be defended. There are others that defend the volunter system just as much as me, yet you pick on me for some reason. I have recognized certain problems with FDs and the volunteer system and do, as much as you may not think I do, remain completely unbiased on aspects such as those. You're so set on a paid system and are not open to any other suggestions. I'm not here to convince anyone of anything, as you seem to be. When someone posts something that is not true, yes I am going to challenge it if I know it is false. I will provide information that I know to those who do not know. No reason to attack me...especially if you're so set on keeping the discussions relevant.

I would not characterize my last posting as attacking anyone. I consciously refrain from that form of expression. I was merely illustrating an image that some postings conjured up in my head. I used no profane or derogatory comments in my description. But, just to hedge against such a possibility, you'll note I started out that posting "with apologies". If I offended anyone, I do apologize. That was not, and is not my intent. As to the opinion of another poster about the FD's doing a great job, I am happy that you feel that way. Now, if you're talking about election day service or barbecues or parades or fundraising, I am inclined to agree with you. If, on the other hand you're talking about the mission of the fire service - that is the protection of life and property, in case you're unfamiliar with it - then I would beg to differ with you're assessment. Lets leave my life, or lack of one, out of this.

Yes we are all entitled to our opinions, a thought sometimes lost on these boards. I'm sorry, but I have accomplished a lot in my life that I am proud of and am an extremely intelligent person who has received many awards for that, and being compared to a cheerleader is just plain out offensive. I understand that was not your intent and I thank you for your apology. I respect your postings because you are one of few people who truly utilize these boards for their exact purposes and I feel you truly are making an effort to better the services provided to LI. I'm glad we can get back to the topic. You say you disagree with the idea that the volunteer depts. on LI are able to serve the community in a sense of protecting life and property. Any specific examples that you could provide that prove this? One of the reasons I defend the volunteers so much is because I have been blown away on many occasions by their service and am simply curious as to what incidents have lead you in the other direction.

I feel that citing specific departments or incidents for criticism is counterproductive. All it will do is cause those closely affiliated with those departments to be offended and lash out. Let me just say that I have personally participated in about 6500 responses in my career. The things I've witnessed, firsthand, have caused me to hold the volunteers in very low esteem. Training, experience, maturity, courage. All lacking. Of course, I am tarring the whole bunch with one brush here, but from my experience it is pretty appropriate.

I agree that we shouldn't name specific depts. in some cases, but what I asked for was specific examples of situations where you saw an FD providing services that did not meet the needs of the public (i.e. a call that you were there for, etc). It's just a little proof to back up what you say.

Suffice to say there have been hundreds of instances where I have observed cowardice and incompetence. We all have. In your heart you must know people that have no place in the fire service. If not, than you're from a different universe than the one I live in. You would be foolish to make a blanket statement that all volunteers are either competent or brave. I would'nt make such a statement about the paid ranks. Not sincerely anyway. The problem is that you have an organization that opens its doors to everyone. A good many people who pass through those doors don't belong, period. But, because the pressure to inflate the membership rolls - so as to be able to impress the politicians - is so important, they are accepted. On the other side of the coin you have members who are dead, out of state, hell, even some in nursing homes, who are still on department rosters. I know this to be so in my department. One of the gripes I have long held for the volunteers is that, to them, appearance is everything. As long as we can put up an impressive front to the politicians and the public, we will continue to assure our existence. Somewhere along the way they've lost sight of their mission.

Yes, I do know some people who don't belong in the FD, and it's simply because they are not active. But because they are not active, they are not permitted to attend any social events so it sort of balances itself out. They can't not show up and still reap the benefits. As far as that open door policy, it is partially true. One FD I know has turned down several applicants. One reason, a past arrest. Another reason, an inactive status in another dept. There are other reasons I'm sure, but these are those that I am aware of. If your FD has people who are dead or in nursing homes on the roster, then you guys need some administrative help over there. Not a single dept I know has such people on their rosters. They do have people out of state on the rosters though, and that is because they have, through their dedicated service, earned lifetime membership. It is an honor awarded to them and they deserve it for putting in their time. I would assume this would apply to those in nursing homes as well.
You speak so avidly against volunteers, yet you refuse to provide examples of the "poor quality service" that you have witnessed. You must be able to support your statements with real life examples if you're so passionate about paid systems. I have provided incidents where I have witnessed superior quality in the volunteer system. If you are unable to support statements, then we must render them simply as opinion rather than fact.
Here's another one...A commissioner who has the 2nd highest rank as far as alarms go in the dept. He doesn't get a car, a computer, money handed to him. He gets a cell phone for business purposes and that is it. Sure, he attends conventions, but he attends them to gain more knowledge (knowledge is key to the fire service, right??). And this is not his first time on the BOFC. They're not all bad...

I have to laugh at the comment that the poor taxpayers have to give for lavish fd houses, has anyone who is complaining actually ever stepped in Lindenhurst HQ? It is a disgrace that these 2 companies; Engine & rescue have to deal with these shoeboxes called offices!! How about changing this to allocate for the growing number of fire & rescue personnel needed to keep this village safe. With the increase in assisted living complexes and retirement complexes, the number of rescue & fire calls continue to steadily climb each year.

OK I'll bite, I admit the portable in the car is buffy but hey I love being in the LFD so I suppose I'm a Buff. But does that make me shitty I don't think so. I am in no way saying I'm perfect I'm still learning everyday sometimes by trial and error but I'm trying. I'm sure if you look hard enough you can find issues with everyone that has served in the line since Herman Funk that's just the way it is. The deciding factor is what you do to correct the things you've messed up I feel I've always tried to do that. And even though I know the answer to my next question I'll ask it anyway if you do see things that I do you don't agree with tell me in person. 1- Paul and Howard are two of the most decorated firefighters in this department and no matter what company you are in, you have to respect that.
2- The engine company leaders are obviously doing something right because people are transferring into the company NOT transferring out of the company.
In this case lets get real here, anyone that has something to say about the engine company or its leaders are jealous that their own company is not ran as well or fight fires as well as the engine company.

The jealousy of the Engine Co. is amazing all of you who talk shit dont have the balls to say any of this to any of the Engine members,why is that? As far as not going to a training,why should the Engine Co. go to a training they get all the work in the Village because nobody else gets out except the Hooks and Hose.If you would like to dipute the facts just take a look at alot of working fires and see who is 1st due...1-6-3. 15th St. 1-6-3 1st due thanks to the Bay Co.for losing water on the Engine Co.and blocking the street so the Hooks couldnt get down it good job, and sometimes like Plain St. 1st and 2nd due with 1-6-11 that street is zone 1,Phyliss Dr.1-6-3 1st due zone 4, N.Monroe 1-6-3 1st due zone 4,an Engine members house on 37th zone 3 a few years back 1-6-3 1st due wow thats good with Shit 4 two blocks away... good going, a new members house on 6th st.1-6-3 first due and 1-6-1 was on the road already...must have taken the scenic tour when they heard it was a working fire.Where was the sister company The Bay Co.Oh thats right they didnt come until later...better off that way.As far as the fire goes at one of members buisness the Engine Co.was there for 2 minutes before anyone else got there the building was a loss from the start by the way thats zone 1,1-6-3 1st due again and for the company that trains all the time and thinks there hot shit they rolled the bread truck and not their engine alot of good water vacs and tarps are going to do at a fire.That company needs to see what the problem is at 39th st that everbody wants to leave and not blame another company for the members transferring out.So for the coward who called the two Lts. from the Engine Co. old and has beens then you dont them because they are still two of most active fireifghters in the Dept. And one them transferred out of Sheet 4 after 22 years because they are a joke. And I would rather have them leading me then the six supposed officers those other two companies have, So the Rabbits and the Rats can keep holding hands and skipping along playing nice with each other because together the two companies arent worth much so hold on to each other because its all you got.Your talk is cheap and your skills suck and at any time feel free to confront an Engine member or officer face to face and say any of the things you hide behind your keyboard saying.So for the person who said the Engine is a bunch of clowns I would feel better knowing they are on the way then having one of those other companies be there standing outside while the fire is inside.Maybe you could learn that in Yaphank that you have to go in to fight the fire instead of the controlled burn in a concrete building.
You can have the members from 39........and the thief you took in.....not just 1 thief but 2 thief's.......and as for being first due on a few calls, you can have those too.. and the only reason you guys get out is because 98% of your company either work for the broke ass village, OR they don't have jobs, they sit around all day and buff calls and wait for alarms....unlike the rest of America who actually have careers.....OH wait i forgot one thing, the whole 15th st fire was actually your fault AGAIN, because the "ENGINA" doesn't need positive water from the hydrant before they commit themselves to a working fire, they think someone else will do it, well lucky for you guys, 161 had to save your asses by hitting the hydrant......so don't try pawning it off on 166 when it was clearly you own stupidity......speaking of being stupid, you guys should really take you heads out of your asses and see that its not only sheet 4 and the bay that find your circus funny...ITS THE WHOLE DEPARTMENT!!!!!

Not a good attitude, my friend. LFD is not that busy to begin with, and in this field you never stop learning. Know it all attitudes kill people, and this line is a poor excuse to justify not going to a training.

I can rattle off a number of fires that the bay has been first due I can also remember pulling up second or third due and pulling a line off a truck, so what does first due mean anyway? This is not the point of my post the point is that we are one department, and the attitude that we need no training or we never need anything from any other company is dangerous and I know your officers would agree.
In a way I seriously doubt you are from the engine company with the attitude you have, because no one from the engine has ever came up to me with a problem but that’s right you were the one that brought up not saying anything to anyone’s face. You know who I am just look at the name if you have a problem lets sit down one day and talk like gentlemen, and stop destroying the good relationships that do exist between companies.

I really hate posting on this board because all it does is facilitate the perception that we are all a bunch of children. Look like Chris said every company has there ups and downs it's a cycle. But typing on this website accomplishes nothing, other than driving a spike between members and the companies and giving Newsday and the "Unions" a reason to justify the position that we are not needed or have become obselete. There are good firefighters in every company and I agree Howie and Pauly maybe at the top of the list but there is no need to bash others. Look what we did on Sunday the department came together to support a Firefighters family in need there were no fights no trash talk just a group of people working together to support a Brother and that's what it's all about. We don't all have to like each other but we should be mature enough to handle this as adults. If something was done that has bothered you so much I assure you that posting on this board won't fix it, bring it to your officer's or at a company or department meeting at least let your voice be heard others may agree with you but be afraid to speak up cause they feel no onelse feels the way they do.

First of all, learn how to spell
Second, if you have something to say, why don't you tell us who you are
Third, rescue is doing their job
Rescue is charged for about 2500 calls a year... while the rest of the DEAPRTMENT is only responsible for about 500 calls... do the math.. ONE COMPANY has 5 times as many calls as the ENTIRE department, and they don't have as high a number as far as members go for that matter.
So before you start blowing words out your ass about how rescue isn't doing the job, think about how many calls they are responsible for and how they don't have as many memberrs as other companies, and yet they STILL hold shit down... its rare Rescue needs to 24 a call to another town...

I heard shit4 is SO EAGER to drive around with lights and sirens that their members responded to the main house to get the ambulance PRIOR to the tones going off... guess billy buff figures because he works for central he can respond BEFORE the tones... and all for what, one of their probies getting hit in the head with a helmet which was a non-worthy transport anyway... so not only did shit 4 respond prior to tones, they kept one of the fire departments ambulances out of service for a worthless transport.

i just learned that shit4 was actually TURNED AWAY from taking the ambulance... rescue company took the call because the tones did in fact go off when shit4 arrived at the firehouse, and there was a rescue crew already present... so wow.. a total waste of a response to the firehouse now shit4... way to endanger the safety of the citizens of lindenhurst by responding like animals prior to an energency call going off, for something that wasnt that big of a deal anyway, that from what i hear, the chief said to transport in his vehicle to the hospital rather then using an ambulance.

Just remember that on the basis of alarms it is like 90% Rescue to 10% fire and the general public who rely so much on Rescue now a days, will not support the FD the way they used to if you try to crush Rescue.
They will support the FD because the FD rides the rescue calls not the rescue members. The members spend their time shooting down a training facility that would be very valuable.
Rescue comapny members can do thier job for the most part very safley fire fighters do their job and we can very easily get hurt so that is why we need to train more often and convienently, thats why this training center is needed.
Here are my very rough figures.
You could ride your 90% of rescue calls and the chance of getting hurt is lets say 5% to 10%.
Now if we ride our 10% of our calls our chance of getting hurt is lets say 20% to 30%.
Rescue is under the impression that because you guys ride a big chunk of calls that your job is more important but you are comparing apples to oranges when a recue call kicks in 3-5 people are needed fo 45 minutes. When a legit fire kicks in 75 could be needed to do this job for hours on end.
What do you guys think should there be a reescue chief this April?
Should we give them a chance and let them prove us right that they will be a failure then vote them out the first chance we get?
OR
Should we say screw them vote this by-law in never let them have a chief again, and make them pay for there captains mistakes?
Either way I say everyone should do thier best to make it to the meeting and vote its your decision you have no place to complain if you do not vote.

It is not "their" rigs, the rigs are the Lindenhurst Fire Department's, and yes the Rescue Company should be the primary responders for these rigs. but as long as the mentality that is written here prevails, then yes it will bring about the demise of Rescue, causing the village to provide a paid service, increasing taxes and beginning the errosion of the Fire Department.

Yeah, Deadwood is a problem all over, but don't fall into the trap of criticizing an entire company for the actions of a few. I am sure there are members pulling their weight. Just ride the storm out and stay low brother.

Know your facts, I didn't stand up at any council meeting and say the money should be used for EMS. EMS has always been fully funded. What the letter from the company, signed by the secretary asked about the cost of the park training facility as it has been reported currently and what it was 2 years ago when it was first proposed.
It seems that the figures quoted at that time may not have included anything but the building. Then the issue of the labor cost doubling to meet the union standard as well as soil samples, foundation and the technical equipment and utilities have added to the final estimates, some of which could be anticipated and other like the labor cost could not.
It is the responsibility of all of us to be proper stewards of the taxes paid by our residents which includes most of us as well. Giving the taxpayers the best bang for their buck is what keeps the Volunteer fire service viable. Fire Districts around us have also built their own training facilities, while the FRES Training Grounds have been upgraded to quite the state of the art costing millions of taxpayers dollars. TRAINING is what keeps us all safe when the BIG ONE comes and the little ones day to day. You all know I have been there for you at fires and when you or a family member needed help. I care about each and every one of you and those you care about.
After almost 19 years as an active member, I also know that everyone has an agenda. Mine is to serve my community, the department and my company in order to make a difference for the better in a persons life. Simple.
I don't believe adversity builds character, it reveals it, to quote someone wiser than I. Those of you who post anonymously using bad information without going to the source first should think about the public forum you use which is out there for the world to see. A clear, concise, well thought out, and articulate commentary and then there is you; a childish "shut up you are ruining the department"
Grow up child, as a taxpayer I am willing to look at both sides but when you get juvenile, and post with out using your name well your side loses.
Perhaps since you wish to air your dirty laundry out in this public forum; Newsday should revisit the Lindenhurst Fire Department and the Village Government that oversees it. I for one would love to see where all this money comes from for; Firemans Park, maintenance of the track and facilities, the racing rigs, and the maintenance of those rigs, racing fuel, utilities for those buildings.
Hell shutdown the Snails, sell off all that unnecessary stuff, give the park back to the village and it's residents, and use all that wasted money to put a paid EMS service in place. That way you get your rigs out.

I was at the council meeting karen did not say the money for the training center could be used better on EMS. But she did stand against it. And no it was not for reasons of policy or legality.
I do hope all this bickering and bad feelings between companies are not prevalent during a real emergency when all companies are dispatched to work together.
That WOULD be a sad state of affairs.
A friend of mine told me to check out these forums because my captain was being bad mouthed.
Now… those who know me know that I am new to the fire department and its structure. I grew up in an ambulance core where my dad was a volunteer Paramedic. When I became an EMT, I joined an ambulance core in a different state. I came out here a year ago and signed up with the fire department real quick. So like I said, I am new to the whole fire department organization. I didn’t have to worry about the different companies, we didn’t have them. Our FD was separate (and paid).
Being new to this organization, I’m getting a bad taste in my mouth. Me and some others who recently joined, within rescue and within other companies, aren’t exactly being taught any real values. It feels as if we’re in high school again. We joined to help our community and what we see are a bunch of companies bad mouthing each other, bad mouthing officers and bad mouthing chiefs.
This message board, isn’t private to the LFD. Its PUBLICALLY ACCESSIBLE. Look at how you are all representing the LFD. People are bad mouthing chiefs and officers. Companies are battling other companies. If John Doe reads these articles, and needs to call 9-1-1, what do you think is going through his head? If his house is on fire, do you think he worries about the people who show up. I’ll tell ya, if my house was on fire I’d be a little worried about how LFD might handle it. Its not that I doubt the talent of the firefighters, its just I see all the bickering and I worry as to what will happen on a scene. Will company A battle company B. Will Company C disobey an order from a Chief because they want to do something different?
Theres no sense in me trying to defend my company, because it just starts arguments. Im not looking to bad mouth any other companies .I have friends in each and every company, so for me to bad mouth a company means im badmouthing a friend. I also think every company has its ups and downs from time to time. I havn’t been in long enough to get a grasp on it, but then again, I’m in long enough to see lots of fighting, and that’s not a good thing.
What will it take for everybody to just stop with the immature comments on here. If you have something to say, make a VALID argument, otherwise, keep it to yourself. Your not helping out anybody. Your name may be anonymous, but chances are, we know what company the comments came from, and that doesn’t say much about your company.
Now those who are immature, will of course reply to this and start cursing me out and cursing out rescue, so be it. That just proves my point. I’ve never sat here and cursed anybody out, nor do I plan do. I don’t make a habit out of reading this forum, it’s a waste of my time and theres NOTHING here worthy of reading. I can go into an AOL chat room if I really feel the need to argue with a 13 year old kid… I don’t like having to volunteer with a bunch of 13 year old kids who like to curse each other out behind the animosity of the internet though.
That’s my 2 cents, take it as you want. I’m in the fire department for 2 reasons.
1) To help my community
2) To possibly make a few new friends
If petty arguments and immature comments get in the way, there are a LOT of other organizations I can volunteer my time to… I’m sure the soup kitchens don’t have a message board where people bash each other about how the meatloaf was prepared last night…

Back to loser998877: Why would i want to "suck some officer azz" - anybody who knows what they are talking about knows that I don't suck up to the officers, I actually tend to butt heads a lot more with them because I was taught a different standard then they were. I learned in NJ, not Suffolk County. I learned inside an EMS agency, not a fire agency. Standards were different, im adjusting to them now, thus, I butt heads. So i don't really know where that comment came from you make.. perhaps you didn't really read my response, you felt the need to just "be like your piers" and respond harshly rather then with a proper/well thought out response... onec again, proving my point.
